CNYO/EMPO Halloween Howl Day 2: Red

TimGood

1. Trail then cut in just before 2nd bend. Woods pretty open, probably should have cut in earlier. Already tired from running uphill.
2. Angle down to road, across clearing to trail. Decided it would better running along the top so uphill trail at the water tower.
3. +06:00Down hill to the trail then W end of marsh. Considered the lower trail but decided to climb on the trail and thought running would be good up top. Planned to use #9 as attackpoint. Took trail to the little building but the footing was terrible in the woods. All rocks and fissures so very slow. Passed N of #9 but stayed to far L. Lots of people coming up from below. Stepped in a fissure and fell in until stopped by the knee and thigh of the other leg. Ended in a hurdler position but banged the knee very hard. 2 minutes before I could continue. Had lost track of where I was so wandered a bit before realizing I was short and N of the control.
4. Contoured between the sets of cliffs. Very tentative thru the rocks. Picked up a CSU Blue runner (Brenden?) who I was with thru #6.
5. +01:00Straight line, intending to go on left side of reentrant. Got to far right going around marsh and had to cross the tip of the reentrant anyway. Trail to just past the bend and in,
6. Straight.
7. Out to road at clearing then in at the next clearing. Attack from the corner. Should have been pushing harder in the clearings. Blue runner went in at other corner of the clearing.
8. Considered the road but decided straight. Could see the building after crossing the 2nd gully. Joined again by the same blue runner as before.
9. +04:00Trail around looks to far and I do not want to run thru the fissures again so elect to go straight thru the marsh. Boris (I think, cannot recall exactly now) passes me in the parking lot. Clearing and trails then straight across swamp using the little island of woods in the middle. Sergei is also crossing at the same time but takes a different route. Marsh was slow but passible and the cliffs not to bad. Confident I will see the control since I know it is visible from a distance. Miss it anyway. See the other nearby green control but cannot tell where it is. Have to relocate from the trail and come in from the building thru all the fissures I was trying to avoid. Huge crowd running out of the control as I come back. Tom Strat is among them having made up 12 minutes.
10. Pick my way thru the fissures again to the trail. Stay low thru the first couple of depressions before heading up. Use the green to get the correct spur.
11. +00:40With a group of 3 and just run in general direction and count reentrants. Stay high and hit the gully south of the correct reentrant.
12. Head for the clearing but the wall of green keeps me out. Go out by the buildings instead. Head on a bearing from where the trail crosses the rocks. Pia and Tom (how did he get behind me again) pass me as I slow down in the fissure. Pia leads us to the wrong control then goes to far right as I go straight into the control.
13. Straight. Slow thru the fissures and I cannot hold off Tom and Pia who catch me after crossing the trail.
14. +01:00Think Pia heads across the marsh. Tom & I & a cadet go NE to the trail. My knee is hurting and I cannot keep up. They go L at the 2nd trail while I am confused and go straight. I am thinking the line of cliffs SE of the control is the trail I am on. Realize my mistake after 100m and head straight for the control thru the white woods. Not a bad route except I get to far right and miss it. See several people going NE as I go NW. Other pack has apparently make a mistake as well but by the time I figure this out they are all on the way to 15.
15. See a line of people leaving 15 as I approach. Worried that I will not be able to catch back up.
16. +01:00Straight going high around the reentrants. Heard some yelling and came upon Tom, Eric, and another cadet a minute later. Could not see the control and knew we were short. They called me down to help. They were giving CPR to Gari Williams who had passed out. Stayed and helped until Gari was carried out by the medical people. I took a split just after getting there and before continuing and subtracted the 56:30 from my epunch split. Tom and I went on and finished the course together but without much effort.
17. +02:00Angle down to the road looked like the better choice and we agreed we probably would have done it if still racing. We went straight, across the gully and fought thru the green to the bag.
18. +01:30Straight again, skipping the trail and fighting thru the green. Used stone wall to guide us in.
19. Straight
20. Sort of straight but took a pretty bad line and ended up N of control.
21. Considered sprinting the whole way to try and win this leg. Ran hard but already over 3 hours so not all out. Tom just jogged the last 2.
F. Comfortable pace in.
