Race Evaluation

Texas: Interscholastics A meet: Blue Day 2

1.
2. Wondered where to cross the creek mapped as uncrossable, feeling intimidated after yesterday's chest deep crossing of an even smaller creek. Saw it didn't look deep at the first trail crossing, but continued to the 2nd hoping for a bridge. Difficult to tell if there was a bridge on the map since the line between controls had been carefully bent to cross there. Was deeper there but found 3 cables across the creek: one for the feet & one for each hand. Sacraficed some time & crossed via cable to keep my feet dry, due to concern about brand new shoes causing blisters. Plus lost 20 seconds retying a shoe to restore circulation to my foot.
3. Somehow didn't see the trail option. Then went right past the control without seeing it. First big miss of the day.
4.
5. Trail N past where 2 big boulders were indicated (didn't see them) & followed creek to control.
6.
7. Saw the bag before being able to distinguish between gullies & index contours.
8. Awful micro route choice; hung up in vegitation for a minute while able to see a clear route right by the shore.
9. Not willing to risk the pricker bushes on the straight route. South. Trail to near #3, then straight.
10. Crossed the "uncrossable" creek where the line first crosses it. Again sacraficed some time to keep my feet dry.

15. My 2nd big miss. Wandered around slowly, eventually relocating on the earth bank SSW of the control.
16.
17. Up the spur out of 16, then straight NW.
18. Running down the slot canyon out of 17 was interesting.

23. Argh! Past the water, up the field, up the reentrant, over to the ditch/creek junction feature. No bag so I figured I must be at the junction to the S of the control. Ran N another 150 meters to the next junction where I relocated, turned around & retraced my footsteps to the ditch/creek junction where, this time, I saw a bit of the bag peeking out from behind the 10 inch diameter tree trunk behind which it was hung. Not happy.
24. Scary flat & featureless, wondering which of the little ditches were mapped.
