Race Evaluation

QOC Prince William Forest Park, Happyland: Blue

Nadim

1. I took the road all the way around and contoured at the end so that I didn't have to climb to the control.
2. +00:45I took trails mostly but I got too high when attacking. Some green had kept me from staying lower.
3. I was a bit hesitant on this but came around the green on the right side at the end. This was a little longer.
4. I cut across the field and went down the road, reading most of the way. I was a bit indecisive in my planning to get to #5.
5. +07:34After punching at the bridge at #4, I heard water splashes below. A lab sized mutt had broken through some thin ice and couldn't get out. The owner had been walking the other direction so I called her back and we tried various things to get it out. Eventually, I pulled it out but got my feet wet. I debated using the road and going across the flatter land to #5 but felt it riskier. I took the trail along the creek and broke through the fight green where it was narrow, the went on to pretty much spike the control. Yeah!
6. I went mostly straight but when I hit the trail, I re-centered by turning left on it, going to the bottom of the valley it crossed, then straight-on again. I hesitated at the end when I could see the reentrant, was sure of it, but didn't see the control. It was just a tiny but further down and had been just out of view.
7. I started getting tired on this leg. I walked up some of the hills. Following a reentrant at before crossing the road, I got a little more left than was desireable.
8. I climbed a little for a straighter route, then down the steep hill, along the creek and along the road to the control. I was planning my route to #9 along the way.
9. I took a Gu and drank some water after punching. I thought about using the road behind the control but instead climbed parallel to it on steeper land--this took it out of me. I should have stayed low, then climbed at the end.
10. +00:25I crossed one set of reentrants, then went around another. I dropped a little into the wrong reentrant looking for the control but realized it pretty quickly. I corrected and hit the control by something seemed wierd about following this bearing. The control was a bit further down than I thought it'd be too.
11. +11:30Immediately after leaving #10, I briefly started looking at the leg for #12. After crossing the first ridge, I did it again but this time I didn't realize until after crossing the creek like I was going to #12. I was gettting tired. To correct, I had to follow the trail on the other side of the creek because where I was at the time I realized what happened, the creek was too deep. When If finally got to where I could cross it, I was stuck in thick fight. It took me a long time to get to the control climbing through it but I was right on after the mishap.
12. I left #11 just before Mihai got there. We ran down the reentrant toward the creek crossing. I read the map and thought I could cross a ridge before crossing the creek but it was too thick--the mapped vegetation was incorrect. There was a lot of green, not a thin line. Mihai got ahead of me as I turned back to cross. I was pretty tired and found it hard to catch him. Eventually I did and then jumped off the trail soon after. This may have surprised Mihai. I climbed slowly along what was an old road at one time, then crossed some small ridges to the control.
13. This was the greenest leg of the course. I kept getting pushed left by it. I eventually saw some cabins and as the woods opened up a bit, I was able to move back right to the control. Being pretty tired and out of shape, I was moving slowly and walking a lot. My feet were numb from being wet and cold and they didn't work right.
F. Slowly up the hill to punch.
