Race Evaluation

QOC Riverbend Score-O: Route 1A

donkst

1. Trail off parking lot. Passed Heidi, my wife, who started a minute before me, on the the early part of the trail.
2. Lacked concentration
Hesitated
Unused to map
+01:30
Still getting use to the 1:15000 (it has been a few weeks since I've run on one). Consequently stood for about a good minute about 50 meters SW of control and just looked to make sure I hadn't gone too far. Heidi catches back up to me and goes in and punches a head of me no problem.
3. Almost down to open field then contoured around.
4. Thought about the trail, but then just attacked it straight on. Caught Christian at the control.
5. Straight at it, didn't think to take the trail. Don't know how much of a difference it would have made anyway.
6. Around the house and dropped down on it.
7. Decided to take the low road. Down to trail along river (very scary climbing down the steep rock face!). Took river to ditch that had control and just followed it up. Can't tell if this route slowed me down or not. Might have been better to have just attacked it straight on. However, I beat one runner, who had punched the previous control about 20 seconds before me, to this control by a good 5 seconds.
8. Disturbed by others
+00:15
Wanted to attack straight on, but let another runner pull me up to the trail. Just went down the reentrant. Probably lost about 15 seconds.
9. Lacked concentration
Hesitated
+00:40
Attacked straight on. However, wasn't concentrating enough and stopped after the first intersecting trail and stood around in red light mode for a good 40 seconds wondering why the bag wasn't there. It finally dawned on me. Perhaps I should pass over the second trail. DUHHHHHHHH!
10. +00:15Attacked straight on, but drifted a little too high on the hill to the SE. Also had to check out the decoy control in the reentrant on the way there.
11. +00:10Contoured around hill and up trail. However, cut in from trail a little too early and lost about 10 seconds.
12. Did not like map
+00:45
Straight at it from house to the south. Definately didn't like the map in this area. I didn't have a reentrant circled on my map, but rather a small spur! Is there even a reentrant mapped in this area?! Consequently lost about 45 seconds in red light mode trying to match up the land with the map.
13. +00:20Off the parking lot. Went to the decoy bag on the South end of the ditch. Finally saw the real bag on the other ditch at the south end. Almost impossible to tell the difference between these two ditches on the map because they are so close together and its a 1:15000. Lost about 20 seconds due to decoy.
14. Saw Peggy D. coming toward GU (and out of 79) as I was headed toward 79. Hesitated a bit to match up land.
15. Bad map reading
Lacked concentration
+00:45
Saw Francis H coming toward 79 (from 84 direction) as I was headed toward 84. Lost concentration and got pulled off by decoy bag on top of small spur in between the two controls. Stopped and looked around for a good 45 seconds. Finally dawned on me to go to next hill top.
16. Frustrated
+03:30
Up the open area to the Park sign. Looking for a lone 1 meter high boulder (which is what the control description was) a little east of the sign, which is where my circle was. Really passed within about 20 meters of bag, but I was looking in the wrong direction. I kept looking all the way down to the trail. Then, I looked up from the trail walking back and forth, no luck. Then, Francis comes down onto the trail and just keeps running and says "It's up there." Lost a good 3:30 on this one. Very frustrating. I would argue that the control should have been marked as a boulder cluster, or on top of a cliff, but oh well. It's hard to see the difference between some of these features on a 1:15000.
17. +01:30Because of frustration with last control, and because Francis took the trail (didn't stop to think that he might be out of time and headed in), I went down to the trail and took the stream down to the control, instead of staying clearly focused and just heading dead south (from GN) back over the hill and attacking straight on. Consequently lost a good 1:30.
18. +00:05Straight at it, no problems, but got pulled off by the decoy bag, which was in line, and lost about 5 seconds.
F. Bad map reading
Frustrated
+02:00
Time was 56:24 when I punched 63. Should have had no problem getting 85 and getting in on time. However, after I came out of the field west of 85, I ran into a ruin, and misread it as the ruin SE of the pit control, not the ruin just north of the pit, which my control circle had covered up. Consequently, I thought I had to turn further north to get the pit. Needless to say, the search didn't end well, and running out of time, I decided to come in and take the three point penalty (1-one point bag missed and 2 points for the 1:08 minutes over the one hour time limit).
