WCOC/HVO Winter Series 2020: Green WS#5

cmorse

1. Straightish, L of the hill midway, around the R side of hill
2. Started out intending to cut through green S of marsh, didn't look so appealing as I got closer, elected to head N and contour the white hillside but the barberry extends further up this hill than mapped, so climbed quite a bit higher than I wanted, then cut across just south of the OOB. As I approached the steepish hill with cliffs I opted to skirt S to avoid the steepest bit, wound up on the trail which I ran to the stone wall and in. Clean, but definitely a circuitous route to get there..
3. L of line to trail, trail past hill then in.
4. More or less straight, crossed first bit of stonewall so must have been slightly R of line
5. +00:12L of line to contour on the hillside, wound up getting a little lower than originally anticipated, elected to go under the cliffs rather than climbing the steeper bit, but had a good climb to get up to the control anyway
6. +01:00Got shifted R of line, then lost track of the various trickles. A large rootstock/blowdown obscured visibility to my left, got beyond the circle to next boulder, hesitated a bit, figured it out and came back
7. +01:30Intended to go straight, attacking off the wall corner on the line, but seem to have gotten pushed to the R, probably not wanting to climb as much as I should have. Then got to wall and couldn't see a corner in sight and long hesitation to figure out where I was, then figured it out, but had to climb back up the hill to get to control
8. Stayed R of the line of cliffs, then up between the ponds, a bit slow due to some Rosa along the pond but then in and around the S side of the spur, description said southern end, but seems like I had to climb back up to flag anyway
9. +00:10Climbed back to height of land staying R of line, around end of prominent cliff then S to control. Probably quicker to stay right on the line, but I chose the woods that looked like better running
10. +01:30Up along east edge of marsh, up through reentrant, crossed the wall and right through the top of what I thought was the right reentrant. Not seeing a flag I continued on a bit but hit the trail, looped back a little lower, then climbed back up and flag visible just about where I had come through initially - I just didn't see it. Dang..
11. Pretty much straight, a little slow up the slope before the control, but no issues
12. Thought I was straight, but picking easier running routes brought me up the hill on the south edge of circle, but flag was evident once I cleared the wall.
13. +00:15Hestitation in deciding upon a route - first choice was R of line and bash through the green. Then decided the trail looked like a good option and turn N once past the green. But once the trail crossed the wall, I decided the woods didn't look that bad and decided to bash the barberry anyway since I could see the double wall (but not the flag) from across the crappy section. So into the fray I went. Wasn't as fast as the trail, but the savings in distance probably made it a wash.
F. Original plan was trail, but woods were great so straight back.
