1. +02:00Right. Was reading ahead and then, confused that I'd somehow missed the orange, I turned in early, apparently on ride through semiopen. Semiopen is gone - it's forest now, just slightly shorter trees. Figured that was probably happening. Somehow I didn't see the overprinted dirt road. I suspect that was smaller/windier. Eventually hit a bend that seemed vaguely like the one due east of the bag, so I headed west. Eventually hit the trail I'd inteded to take originally, at about the right spot, turned left and ran a bit to verify bends (not quite to road.) Came back, thought I saw the indisinct trail, followed that through a gap in the darker green. Went to every openish area I could find, and it was in the 3rd one...
2. +00:30Straight, then road left to ditches. Diagonaled in and missed left, hitting the trail, then turned around and saw it.
3. +00:05Line to ditches to spur, then angled in (a bit late)
4. +00:20Read contours, ended up in reentrant to right, then decided to angle further in, because 2 people had just come from there.
5. +01:00NE to North-bound ditch. Followed that all the way to to the big road. Decided along the way that the straightish route had so much winding, and so much potential thick stuff on the other side, that the ~600m run due east along the road was a good investment. Apparently it was. It had the added advantage that there was no need to wear a shirt from that point on, so I took it off to be cooler. Right around on trails at the end (again, it looks a little better to me... still.) Looks like I picked well, as my split is good, despite a bathroom break along the way. At the bag, I drank the 3rd quart of the 1 gallon there. That wasn't enough water for ~40 minutes into a course on a hot day.
6. Trail. Pace count messed up, but I could see field coming up, so I cut in right on and nailed the bag.
7. +00:15Exit NW was pretty slow then trails fast, then went through more veg. than I should have before noticing how really fast the white/orange into this bag was.
8. +00:15Through perhaps more green than needed. I wonder if around left was faster.
9. +01:00Drank water, took main road (shirt off again :). cut in on trails and wasn't quite sure if I hit the indistinct trail or not as I ran toward the end of the vegetation. A little hesitant in there, but not sure how I lost 1:30...
10. +00:15Ran through crap. Fall. Run more. Almost fall again. Bang shin.... Drifted right, but looked for hills along road, then aimed in to hilltop, then compass/pace in.
11. +00:15Ditch, trail, past trail to ditch, then back to bag. Route a little conservative...
12. +00:15Mostly straight. Wishing for a ditch. Looped in a little low.
13. +00:10Mostly straight, over both earthbanks, attacked from perhaps a bit too high.
14. A little left of line, ditch to hilltop, attack.
15. Back to same ditch, past hilltop, attack.
16. +00:10S to road, cut in due E. Should've cut in a little later.
17. +00:10Went to bail to the big road, but picked up a nice new trail that paralleled it so I took that. Some diagonal cut to the road, then road until the rise where I cut in on the indistinct ditch. Catching Florin on this ditch, and passed him and two others on the way to the hilltop. Went to top before seeing bag on side.
18. +00:35Overshot left, then came back, Florin in sight (coming in correctly.)
19. +06:00Omigosh. Planned to follow line to the ditch by the green, then right to trail, and in. The "white with low-bushes" was pretty crappy though, so my bearing wandered up to 90 degrees as I followed passable ways. Went north a ways in some ditch, then tried to cut across the triangle. Awful stuff. Hit a hunters stand, I though it was unmapped, or maybe the one near the western tip of the marsh. In any case, a few more steps Northeast, and I should hit the ditch. But the ditch never came. It just got thicker, and marshier, until I decided I must have passed it. So I bailed South, but there were a lot of vines, and it was getting worse. So I decided to go east toward the trail. But that got bad. So I went Northeast to where it was lighter. And found a clearing with low bushes, that kept getting wetter and wetter. And the shape was like the one 200m west of 19, so I went with that theory, and went around the green to the south, and that kind matched, and finally, a trail appeared. I then pace counted assummed the marsh I was just in was the mapped one, and as I was running out, I looked right looking for light, and then I saw a bag someone hid in the bushes. So I punched it...
20. +02:30And then I promptly forgot that I'd planned to go left, and went right. I remembered about 1 minute later, and then it wasn't worth going back (or maybe it was...)
21.
F. Peter G. beat me in the chute twice last week, so I put some gas into this. Not max., as it was really hot, but more than normal.
