Race Evaluation

Colorado 5-day Day 1: Red

Nadim's comments - by leg

1. I started with Mark Voit who was on Blue. Peter G.started around 8 minutes ahead. Peggy had gone out 4 minutes ahead. J. Brautigam 2 minutes ahead. Mark Dominie 2 minutes behind. Ran a little wild and fairly straight but I spiked it.
2. Time Lost: 08:00I thought to go around the initial spur but figured it was safe to go straight. I ran on compass bearing and started feeling a little uncomfortable only 250m out. Looking for low ground and a trail that I didn't see, I came up a reentrant that looked promising at first. I thought it was climbing too steeply and didn't have a water course but kept climbing anyway. Eventaully I came upon hillsides that looked good and a control that wasn't my #2. Expanding out and generally east, I found others. Soon I bumped into Peggy who was equally perplexed. After a bit more hunting, I ran into Peter and asked if he was looking for #2 too--he said he was looking for #7. I realized how far off I was and headed straight to it, picking up Peggy along the way. Just before getting there, Ted Good came in to it.
3. I took the middle road. Ted seemed to go lower. I hit the cliffs SE from the control and climbed to it with Ted coming in from the S just before me and Peggy not far behind.
4. Straight. Ted took a lower track and I forget who arrived first--it was close. I didn't drink.
5. Across the first reentrant and down along the spur to the reentrant junction in the field. Ted was on my left a few steps behind. I climbed higher and Ted ducked under. I got there just ahead struggling up the last few meters as Mark Dominie was leaving.
6. Mostly straight passing Mark Dominie, to the reentrant junction and up, still ahead of Ted by just a little.
7. Time Lost: 00:05Straight toward a rock face, I stuggled and didn't find it on the other side--perhaps this was unmapped? Ted hit the correct rock just to the left a little higher.
8. Time Lost: 02:10Out the spur, I was about even w/Ted and thought his course might veer off at this point. I turned left after the knoll and went down the spur. I didn't see anything but did see Suzanne Armstrong going to the next spur. I was wondering if I had the right spur and since I didn't see anything, I went to the next. I could tell Ted was still on the first spur. I saw the bare rock and soon turned back. Ted was not in sight but I could see the control just a bit below where I'd been earlier.
9. Time Lost: 00:45Contouring across, I ran over the bare rock and down a reentrant to the big field/reentrant junction. Keeping a bearing, I saw and passed Mark Dominie for the second time and struggled climbing to the road. I dropped-in to the big reentrant but stayed high crossing the side reentrants. Eventually I came to a stop somewhere on some rocks above the stream with another young woman orienteer. I read the map and realized I was too low, turne up and ran two contours to the control.
10. Time Lost: 01:45I drank and had a Gu. As I left, Mark D. had just arrived. He didn't seem to stop to drink. I ran down the reentrant, got very near the bottom and wondered why I didn't see it. Looking back, up and to the right, I saw the control 3 contours above in the cliffs. Mark caught me here and followed me there. This was a poor choice for a control location with few aproaches and dangerous cliffs.
11. Up the reentrant on the right side, crossing it as it bent right, up and to the boulder.
12. Time Lost: 05:30The cliff in the middle seemed to require going left or right. I decided to stay high. I crossed the reentrant but for some reason I thought there were two to cross. I stayed high and hit a road. Still looking very near the control area on the map, I didn't see a road and figured it must be new. The meet notes said the entrance road was only just 2 weeks old so I did't feel bad crossing it. I hit a second and started down it a way before reading wider and seeing that I was on the edge of the map. Turning around, I attacked from the road bend, missed low and went over the spur. It took me a while to convince myselft that the spur I saw was the one on the map. Once I did, I climbed right to it.
13. Time Lost: 00:15Across the ridge, I read the reentrant to my left, saw the knolls on my left and kept on, passing Ted Good who was going the other way. I started to pass the reentrant for the supposed saddle but turned back a step or two and looked right to see the control between two cliffs. This was definately not the correct clue for the control and many people had troubles.
14. Time Lost: 00:20Back-tracking to get out, I picked my way down the rocky reentrant and ran across the field to more rock. I was on a good bearing but unconfident since I had trouble reading rock detail along the way. I dropped a few contours and cut right before coming back left.
15. Over the ridge and straight at it. After crossing the first reentrant, I could see Mark D. and one other younger foreign orienteer headed toward #16. I spiked it.
16. Going straight, I eventually gained on Mark and the other orienteer enough to see them ahead and a bit lower. Mark got there first and headed to #17 cutting back in the direction he had just come from. I got there just after the other guy.
17. Down the hill with a steady but controlled descent, I could hear the other guy coming. We went around the big spur using the road. I climbed a bit to shorten distance, passing Mark D. The other guy went lower and seemed to get almost ahead but stopped for some reason (tired?). I hit the reentrant, started cutting up and looked ahead. I saw it 70m away up 3 contours and pushed a bit with the confidence that site gives you.
18. Straight up, I walked some.
19. Too tired for a good run in.
