Race Evaluation

Colorado 5-Day: US Relay Champs: Green

mindsweeper

1. +14:00Out behind Mihai and Steve Gregg. Mistook the rocky hilltop on the nearby hill for the huge cliff half a kilometer away. Stopped way short and spun all over the place. Finally wound up by the shooting range, and started heading in the right direction again. However, I had a really hard time reading the contours around the control, and lost a few more minutes missing to the left.
2. For the rest of the race, I was running at intensity 2 or 2.5. I knew my teammates didn't care that much, and I wanted to save my energy for Sunday. Went high route to this control.
3. Above the hilltop, then contouring somewhat.
4. I knew this area really well now since I had been exploring it while looking for #1. Found the trail easily and compassed to the first pit, then found the control easily.
5. Decided it wasn't worth it to climb up the road, and went straight for the reentrant. Then climbed up to the rocks and found the right one.
6. Up hill, then on trail until saddle. Nadim was on the trail with me but he left it pretty quickly. Over saddle and down into yellow to avoid cliffs and bushes. Then straight into clearing and spiked it.
7. Almost headed off as if going to 8, then caught my mistake and headed down the spur. Easy.
8. Straight.
9. +01:00Missed to the right - mistook rocks for the rock faces mapped further SE.
10. Went high up to hill with power line, then down spur. Nadim came in from the right again.
11. Down the spur with Nadim. Then up the hill as Nadim went for the rock. (Luckily we were both right about this.) Magnus was there with a camera so I started running into the control rather than walking.
12. Down around right. Was left through the yellow better?
F. Apart from the horrible first control, not a bad jog.
