Race Evaluation

1. Held back some - but picked up at end to keep Ben and Orlin in sight. Dogleg back to first control bothered me - gave away much of advantage gained by faster runners.
2. No attack point
Bad distance judgement
Did not read control code
Lacked concentration
Pulled up short on wrong control, punched, started on - decided to check code, came back, Oh no! Regrouped and reached correct control behind a veritable horde.
3.
4. Went around and contoured instead of taking surer approach from top of mountain. Lots of people wandering around - including Ben, who I thought was long gone. Tough to relocate, but eventually found the right cliff.
5. Contoured to saddle and in.
6. With Ben down across road and powerline, through southern edge of swamp and along stone wall. Watched him pull away.
7.
8. Took direct approach - met Joe B. near control - he came in from toward the road, which was probably faster.
9. Went between cliffs to the right of Ranger Cliff and up reentrant. Joe took a faster line to the left and apparently got way ahead. I also got caught at control by some guy in a navy blue o-suit (later found out he was Grant Staats).
10. Followed navy blue around hill. We were a little right of the control - I corrected first while he went further right.
11.
12. Dropped down to clearing via the stream - rough going. Veered downhill off contour until I hit the trail and road junction. Saw navy blue heading out to road as I approached control from below.
13. Up road then straight up to control.
14. Navy blue went toward road - I headed up to top of ridge and then cruised down to control, saving climb and getting ahead of him.
15. Pushed a little right by vegetation and a bit hesitant in circle.
16.
17. Saw streamers both directions when I reached road, wasn't sure which way to go. Guessed correctly.
18. Joined by navy blue as I contemplated Bull Hill. Put the engine in suffer gear and headed up.
19. Saw Ben, Orlin, Joe B. and Greg Balter all plotting points when I arrived. Greg told me later he wasn't there, and strangely enough, he wasn't wearing the same o'suit when I encountered him later. The brain must have been going...
20. Detoured southwest to avoid suicidal fall and continued around swamp. Saw Joe B. heading up to hilltop.
21. Downhill to road then north to edge of swamp and in. Saw Joe B. and Orlin cut in too early - met them in the icy pond occupying the saddle the control was in.
22. Back out to road with numb feet. Crossed unmapped streams flowing north out of swamp and they felt warm! Headed up side of hill, but legs swayed brain to taking a less direct uphill route. As a result stayed too low and ended up in the saddle across the mapped stream to the northwest of control. Much time lost. Arrived at control just after navy blue. Who is this guy?
23. Lacking confidence, I went slowly across ridges right into control.
24.
25. Kept expecting to see the control in the multiple parallel reentrants I crossed prior to reaching the right one where it hit the lake.
26. Saw navy blue pulling up short on the way to the last control and heading up hill. Tiptoe by on the lakeshore. Catch Greg Balter and run in with him. He says he has dropped out.
27. Are those rucksacks? I bet they're full of a 40 pound sandbag or something...
28. Dump the ruck, see Ben, Orlin and Joe B. at the finish. Nobody in sight behind me so I jog slowly up the hill.
29. A shame we only get to do some of the obstacles. Given my wobbly legs, it would be quite a challenge to do all of them.
F. At last! Only a grassy field between me and the finish. What is that cadet waving at me for? Oh, one more diabolical event. I manage the dizzy bat OK, do a forward roll to clear my head (I've been told it works) and barely holding steady, aim and throw. I nail the silhouette on one bounce - experience counts for something!
