Boulder Dash: Green Day 1

Charlie

1. +02:00Very tentative, past start triangle to trail on left, trail to sharp bend near wall junction, attempted to go straight to control from there, hit red/brown control in small reentrant, then down reentrant to lower trail. Had no idea the climb back up to the control would be so nasty! Slipped several times on the way up.
2. Glen Tryson passed me on the way down the hill, as I was going very slowly and carefully. Behind Glen across the hip-deep stream-marsh, then pretty straight up to the distinctive looking knoll and the reentrant beyond. Glen is out of sight.
3. +02:00Straight line. Really nasty and slow through saplings. Tim Good passed me just before the red control on the boulder. Crossed stonewall well before trail, so I had an idea where I was, pretty much on the straight line. Stayed on compass until the steep hillside, up to the top, lots of small knolls and depressions, but saw the reentrant to my right and up and in. Michael Commons chatted me up as I went by. Trail route would have been much faster!
4. On pace and compass, right of green patch. Headed for knoll just to SE of right knoll, and ran into Joe B just before it, looking for the blue control, which I found in the depression. Easy from there, across other depression and right in.
5. Pace and compass, saw hill just left and up.
6. +01:00Started straight, saw Jeff Shapiro and Kseniya ahead, a bit of trail and then across the water - not as bad as it looked, across next trail, then into logged area. Very quickly hit stonewall, with big pond to my left, so I was pretty far right. Straight in from there, left side of smaller pond
7. Dogleg back to corner of stonewall, then on pace and compass, checking off rocks halfway there. Right up the spur.
8. +01:00Tried to go straight, but drifted right a fair amount, and under the cliff just across the trail. Straight line from there, and then had to go up line of cliffs. Climbed to top of knoll with boulder on it, that looked like the dot knoll. Kind of nasty, but I could see the knoll from there.
9. Down to trail, which took a long time. Trail to bend, then straight north. A fair number of red runners in the area.
10. +01:00Trouble getting down the hill - pretty scary on the wet rocks. Then straight. Thought I was crossing the depression and the knoll before the control, but ended up on the EW trail. Straight back in, and it was ok.
11. Back to EW trail, then left and across marsh. Thought about going right on the trail, but up the hill looked better. Another runner was going faster ahead of me and took the trail. I went up to the corner of the wall and up the reentrant, across the hill and straight in, getting there before the other guy.
12. Up and over to the field and the trail, the other guy passed me again. Took left trail and went just by the knoll because of misreading the trail near the circle, but not really a problem.
13. Across the stream to the wider trail and around. Faster than going straight, which most people seemed to try.
