QOC Royal Romp 2-Day Classic: Day 1 - Red

bhall

1. Forced myself to take it slow, found the spur followed it down, got myself a little high on the next spur so that I knew I had to drop to get to the control. All good.
2. Started off pretty great, up the stream bed, started over the spur where I wanted to, and then just drifted, found a stream and honestly was quite confused about it, but eventually I ran into 9 which saved me. Then drifted a little left again, ended up too low on that spur and it took me a while to figure out that I needed to go much higher to the control.
3. Exit direction was pretty bad and I recognized it quickly as I was running along the green. Once I corrected my bearing it went pretty well, I just wasn’t moving quickly and was hesitating a lot.
4. Drifted left and too high. There is a pattern here…
5. All good – the reentrant was visible and I got over the spur where I wanted, saw the rootstock and was fine.
6. Good, used the massive reentrant but stayed higher on the edge – counted small reentrants as I passed them and the curved spur was pretty obvious
7. Down the spur, over the saddle and next hilltop, then more hesitant as I counted ditches. Ended up a bit too high but recognized it when I saw the green and beginning of the steeper reentrant below me
8. Tried to contour a bit to save some climb but I don’t think it was really worth it. Approach was all good though.
9. Exit direction was awful and so I ended up contouring on the side of the hill rather than running down in the obvious stream reentrant which was a bit dumb. Was really confident with the approach having already been to the control once before.
10. Was all good until I hit the control in the reentrant from the stream right before it and then hesitated. Thought I had just drifted left again so I went right and then saw a rock and realized that I was one too short.
