Race Evaluation

2011 US Classic Championships: Day 2 - Green Y

Charlie

1. Along jeep road for a bit then anled to stone wall and then on compass. Easy enough.
2. Drifted right enough to cross stone wall, then more or less on compass, stopping when I was far enough and looking around to see rootstock off to the left.
3. +01:00Too many little hills for me to read them well, then looking for the hills when I was far enough and saw a control that pulled me a bit farther right. Not too hard to relocate.
4. Easy enough, although I was looking for it a little sooner and I had to force myself to keep going.
5. +07:00Over the hill and along the marsh, but not doing well keeping track of distance. Thought I had come to the little spur with the hills, but in retrospect too flat. Made parallel error on trail to the right, which made me think I was in the right place, then same thing on hills to the left of marsh, then did it on the trail again. Increasingly frustrated, but third time to trail worked, as I persisted on to the next trail bend, then the bigger knolls and got it.
6. Out to the road, crossing a little corner of the OB on the map, not marked on the ground. Along the road for a bit, heading in just behind Lex. Past yellow patch and stone wall, rough compass to the marsh and around on right, approaching across last knoll and spiking it.
7. +00:20On compass, but apparently drifting right to the little marshy area at right angles to the larger marsh. Stopped and looked around for a bit, seeing it way off to the left.
8. +00:20Pretty good, except I stopped for a bit at the first reentrant because it looked deeper than I expected, then kept going.
9. +03:00Long slog mostly on compass, checking off walls, running a short trail section, then getting off it for last push to road, when suddenly I looked at my compass i was headed NW. Not sure how that happened, but some others seemed to have same problem. Eventually got to the road near the small house, and easy from there, using the stonewalls as a pointer.
10. out to road along top of the drop-off, road across marsh, trail yo stone wall. compass. easy.
11. to road, angle to stone wall and along it.
12. +02:04out to the field and saw the finish banner, so I ran hard for it, no longer looking at the map. I passed a control on the fence, but somehow I thought it was a white course control and i didn't punch it or even check the map. i know how much i lost because I stopped my watch at the finish before going back.
F. slower than the first time, a bit discouraged.

Total Time Lost - 00:13:44
