Nadim's comments - by leg
| 1. | Time Lost: 00:15 | I cut in at the first reentrant crossing planning to run along the stream. I stopped early. Like the previous day, I hadn't adjusted to the 1:15,000 scale. |
| 2. | Time Lost: 00:45 | I went left to avoid getting caught in uncrossable fences and thorns near the building. I cut right at the trail, having mis-interpreted where I entered the woods. Attacking from above the trail, I was wide right 50m or more before correcting. |
| 3. | Time Lost: 01:15 | Crossing the fields, I cut too far right by mistake. Realizing it, I planned to take trails there but the trails were intermittant initially and I lost time. When I finally got to the road near the control, I was gun shy and ran up it to get a good attack point. I figured crossing the green was worth not making another error. |
| 4. | Time Lost: 01:30 | I went right, through the fields. I didn't see the road route to the left. I attacked off the intermittant trail south of the control but came off the curve a bit late. I ended-up west of the control 70m and went 50m further before coming back. |
| 5. | I went up to the fields on the left side to get near, then attacked off the trail intersection below the control. Finally I spiked a control. | |
| 6. | Time Lost: 00:45 | I took enough time to think about options then contoured over to the trail. I went a little left of the line on trail getting to the first field crossing, then right to use trails down most of the way to the river. I cut right and used the bridge stopping once to make sure there really was one. I could see Wyatt above to my right before I crossed. Once across, I cut right again to cross the field on the road and avoid an extra hill going straight. I turned left heading up the stream valley but misread things and turned left again at a trail intersection. This took me up and close to the field that I crossed earlier. I corrected at the next trail, going down. By then Wyatt had got past me. I chased him up the trail and then dropped in to the control after the flat area ended. |
| 7. | Wyatt had taken off first while I ate a Gu and drank. Andres Revesz was at #6 when I got there but I left before he did. I went straight at first to ease the climb then aimed off left once on top so that I could sweep-up the control by coming up the stream. At the bottom of the ditch was a control from another course. I checked it before going upstream to the control to be sure since I had been making so many mistakes. | |
| 8. | I went straight initially, then cut right of the thicker vegetation. Wyatt was visible part of this. | |
| 9. | Time Lost: 06:00 | I knew Wyatt was on Blue and would run to a different control so I tried to ignore his direction. I wanted to bear right of straight just a bit to avoid the green. I corrected cutting left a bit too soon partly prompted by glimpsing Wyatt again--I figured he should be out of the area. This distracted me enough to make me lose my place on the map. I had it oriented upside down so that the control was toward the top of the map. I saw what I thought was control #9 on the map but really was looking at control #6 again. Since it was down a similar shaped reentrant, I didn't realize it. I should of checked my compass but by this time, I was getting flustered taking so much time on a short leg. I went down into the green because control #6 was at the bottom of the reentrant and I thought it was #9. #6 was really well ahead so didn't find anything. I climbed back up and headed backward before going in the right direction again. This time I saw the Green course control on the rootstock. I was really confused by this point and couldn't understand where I was. Though some said the control was visible from there, I didn't see it. I went past #9 dropping down because I still thought it was at the bottom of the hill. I found a rock and relocated. Fortunately, this time I read #9 correctly and ran up the hill right to it. |
| 10. | Time Lost: 00:35 | I dropped down the hill that I had just climbed and took the right trail fork. Reaching the field, I cut left to avoid having to drop then climb to the control once in the woods. I came into the woods a bit NE of the control. I had intended to go to the corner of the field but it didn't look like I could get through there. I contoured across and saw Patrick Shannon cutting from my left to my right. I saw the control and ran to it. I was wondering why Patrick would be going to the same control because he usually runs Blue and I knew it was not a common control. Because I had entered the woods too soon, I had been too low and went to the wrong control. It took me a bit to figure it out but I ran up to the control from there. |
| 11. | Time Lost: 03:00 | I looked for a crossing on the map and didn't see the bridge to the left. I descended to the road and cut right. Patrick Shannon popped out in front of me and I passed trying to read carefully as I did. I wanted to cut sharply left after the bridge but started thinking that it wouldn't go through due to thorns. Rather than waste time making a descision, I played it safe and kept going further, across the field and around all the green to the trail. At the furthest point, I was 390m right of the line. The trail brought me back left and even backwards a bit. Along the way, I saw that my original route would have worked. After crossing the small stream, I passed the first trail and planned to take the next. I didn't quite see it though I did see the fence. I ended up climbing up to the field, fully 255m left of the line. I finally used the trail to attack from above--it was visible from the trail. |
| 12. | I went straight initially then cut right at a trail. I cut right again but this turned out to be the last one going left/right. I used it to get around the green and even checked the control with confidence so low. I cut left after the green and spliked it. | |
| 13. | I tried to run straight and vegetation pushed me right a bit. I got onto path of sorts to the field. I was directly across from marked path south (right) of the control. I cut left after crossing the reentrant to spike the control. | |
| 14. | I took off straight and got there just as Andres Revesz and Greg Lennon were finishing punching. | |
| 15. | I took off straight, not sure if the rocks were at the bottom of the reentrant or the up a few contours. Andres and Greg had gone low and were climbing up as I spiked it. | |
| 16. | I ate a Gu as I walked up the spur. Not having anywhere to trash the container I stuffed it back into my pocket and got my fingers all guey. I also walked off the line to the left a bit while I did this. As I ran through the woods and got close to the field edge, I hit the trail but started to doubt where I was. I continued and attacked off of it, only getting there a little bit before Andres and Greg. | |
| 17. | I stopped very briefly for a gatoraid at the aid station, then took off just right of the line to a trail head down to the stream. I ran straight from there, right past #6 from the day before and climbed to the next trail. I cut left, then took the second right to go up. I cut right at the next intersection and could see the control and a person from the trail. | |
| 18. | Trails up to the field, then straight across the horse field to the correct cliff--yeah! | |
| 19. | Through the tunnel to the left a bit, then across the field to the V-shaped forest boundary. I ran straight up from there and spiked it. I was confident about running across these open woods having done so the previous day. | |
| 20. | I contoured out which took me right of the line to a trail and to the field. I wanted to get a close attack or at least follow something so I went right further to the notch in the field boundary. Using the trail the next +200m, I attacked and noted a stream junction as I kept going. Angelica Riley and Vadim's brother were converging and got there first. | |
| 21. | Time Lost: 00:02 | I chased behind Angelica then passed here. I almost crossed the road, came to a full stop and cut up it. |
| 22. | I felt awfully slow finishing but Dharia cheered me in. Karen Strat was cheerful at the finish too. It took me a long time to settle down in this race. I don't know if it was the slower running or something else. It would have been nicer to finish my last M40+ A-meet race on a better note but I learned things this weekend and had fun which is what counts for me. |
