Race Evaluation

Susquehanna Stumble: Long

TimGood's comments - by leg

1. Not much time for pre race preparation as I arrived shortly before the start. Square dancing all day until 11:30 last night was probably not the best way to prepare for the race. Just follow the crowd. The leaders are to fast and I debate about passing Peggy and Angelica since they usually pass me back in the 2nd half.
2. (a) (A) seemed like an obvious first choice plus everyone else seemed to be heading there. Just followed the crowd again, although I went up the trail a bit farther than most.
3. (e) Was not really thinking and started for (E) although most were heading to (C). Planned to go edcb. Was nearly to (E) when I realized that I would have to go up the hill twice and the route from (D) to 7 was better than from (B). Oh well at least I was not alone. Michael Walthers was with me.
4. (d) Along the top but had some hesitation near the control.
5. (c) Back down the hill. Heidi and Darcy are just arriving on the short stumble.
6. (b) Pass a line of slower runners who took the window in a better order.
7. Still with Michael and ?. Surprised to see that I have not lost to much time with my poor window route. Dave Onkst and Mihai are just a bit ahead. Tom Strat, Peggy and Angelica are all nearby.
8. (i) Dave and Mihai run away but I can tell they are to far left. Should have noticed that I was to far left as well. Miss the control and am to low before veering right. Realize I am low and look up and see it much higher. Also see Mihai running uphill. He must have seen it as well. I did not go as low as the first to overshoot but lost time on other later arrivals.
9. (j) Back with Peggy and Angelica again but I take a poor bearing aiming for the clearcut area and stay to high. See the boulder below me and all the people I was ahead of at (i) passing me as they go straight to it.
10. (g) Follow a nice pack of Dave, Peggy, Angelica and some others. I close up a bit.
11. (h) Stay with the group
12. (f) Dave and Angelica have no fear on the downhill and manage to get away.
13. (k) We close up again on the uphill.
14. (m) Angelica and I cut across the clear cut area. Peggy does as well but takes a higher line. Dave goes low probably to pick up (n) first. Slow way down on the uphill and Peggy, Angelica, Michael and I are all together at the control.
15. (l) I follow Angelica in the direction of (n) but see (L) off to the left and go there first. Peggy and Micheal go the other way. I think this is the split I missed.
16. (n) Controls are pratically visible from each other and with others going the reverse direction there is no doubt.
17. Their way must have been better since I am last in the group as we run thru the nice woods toward 17. Dave has rejoined us and is pushing the pace in the front. I can not move quickly down the steep rocky part just before the bag and am dropped.
18. I think Dave leads most of the group right and Peggy goes straight down. I also go down. When I hit the trail there is no one in sight. Hope to see them crossing toword 19 but they are long gone. Spike the control.
