Race Evaluation

NEOC - Mt. Tom: Red

ParkSchool's comments - by leg

1. Around pond, climb to under cliffs, contour around. Wind up a little high but see flag looking downhill
2. Climb to ridgeline, then straight to control
3. Climb along ridge, pass E of hilltop before control
4. Time Lost: 01:00Out to trail, then chose poor route choice to W down to below large cliff before contouring to control
5. Slightly to R of line ascending R side of large reentrant, then working way up to ridge line. Pick up trail running up ridge
6. Mostly on bearing, although chose better running up small reentrant
7. R or pond, over spur, and in
8. R of line, around triangular knoll, then down along spur
9. Climbed reentrant passing R of form line, then down reentrant. Don't see boulder initially due to snow cover, then notice it 10 m away
10. Time Lost: 01:00Took mentally untaxing route roughly E to pond, but lost time in difficult climb back up to flag
11. Contoured w/ slight climb to L of form knoll due to nice running, roughly N to trail then down hill hitting stream at branch point. Follow stream, then trudge uphill (more slowly then I had hoped) noting stream coming in from right. Angled up toward visible boulder above flag, then in
12. Up reentrant L of dot knolls, continuing up next reentrant then R over spur passing SW boulder on way
13. Up reentrant to R of cliff face, contour around until below large cliffs, then NW to flag
14. N along edge of marsh to trail, then up spur to flag
15. E across stream, hit trail N of marsh, then off trail bend on compass bearing and up small reentrant to flag
16. A little shaky here. Headed S of intended line, but recognized linear form line and able to correct noting small cliff to right of direct line to help set bearing into control
17. N to trail arriving at intersection, then upper trail. Headed S a bit prematurely, but recognized vegetation boundary and able to run E spotting flag from W side of reentrant
18. Time Lost: 01:30Again opted for mentally less challenging bash north to road, hitting just W of trailhead. Departed earlier than I should have after crossing stream, then had to negotiate difficult crossing shimmying over fallen log 8 feet above torrent. I think I would have had easier crossing if I had stayed on road longer and crossed further downstream
19. To trail and across parking area
20. Climbed embankmant and straight to finish. My watch disagrees with official time (93:02) for unclear reasons, but splits entered as I recorded them

Total Time Lost - 00:03:30
