Race Evaluation

NEOC - Mt. Tom: Red

Charlie

1. Dropped my control card at the start. Briefly considered punching on the map, but realized that would result in the map melting, so just squeezed the punch at each control. Out to the road, up the trail past the little building and followed the elephant track.
2. On compass, on top of the oblong hill and up the reentrant.
3. Still following a track halfway, until it looked like the track was too low, so struck out in fresh snow and spiked it.
4. Right of line to trail to bend, then down left side of spur until I could see the reentrant forming ahead, and right turn to the knoll.
5. Across the trail and up the reentrant just right of the line, gradually drifting up to the ridge. More tracks lower, but followed the ridge until it bent left and then right in.
6. +02:30Got a little confused leaving the control. Lots of tracks in lots of directions, but drifted a bit right and enede up on one of the knolls on top of the cliffs, then corrected back.
7. Right side of the small pond, then straight, crossing spur and reentrant and in.
8. Pretty straight. Over the top of the knoll, then down the correct spur and in from the left.
9. Pretty straight. I think the tracks were all left of me. I was in fresh snow until the last 20 yards.
10. +00:30Angling down toward the marshy area. Reentrant was obvious. Stopped to look at the long E facing cliff, as it didn't look long from below, then ok from there. Difficult footing climbing up.
11. N, and across the small spur and out to the trail. Followed large trail until the small trail split off going down to the stream. Crossed the overgrown field in tracks, then lost them when I was back in the woods. Basically straight. Passed two sets of tracks that were going from R to L, but could see the boulder from a distance and right in.
12. Up the first reentrant, then on top of the spurs and spiked it.
13. Around the cliffs to the right. A little further right than most tracks, and down the reentrant in fresh snow for a bit until picking up the tracks for the last 30 meters.
14. Along the stream, over the bridge and in.
15. +00:30Around R side of pond, breaking through ice and getting wet feet. Over the knolls, and then it was a little longer than I expected to the dot knoll.
16. +03:00R of pond, and wanted to go straight, but ended up coming out to the trail. Then I was looking for tracks heading right, but should have been navigating instead!! Got past, and then in wrong reentrant and ended up on trail 100 m beyond. Easy from there.
17. +02:00N to trail and along upper trail, checking off cliff near trail on my right and on compass. Headed in and saw an unmapped cliff and convinced myself it was the cliff beyond the spur and nearer the trail, so I went the wrong way for a bit, but relocated on the boulder SW of the spur.
18. N out to the road in untracked snow, then down the road, cutting in as the broad spur opened up below the cliffs. Down to the stream by the larger rocks and across. I was kind of surprised to see the big rocks, because I thought I was further down.
19. Down the hill, through the parking lot, and across the bridge and around. Probably cost some time.
F. In to the finish where Peter and Phil were waiting fairly patiently.
