Race Evaluation

NEOC Club Champs: Red

jima

1. forgot to start HRM data fob, very wet stream crossing at N end of pond, stayed left/uphill of marsh, peggegd it. Saw Sam Levitin uphill and S of control.
2. back to trail, in from bend / knoll
3. +01:30slightly right of line, wandered too far right in the last 100 m, amazing haw a little snow makes the slightly less thick paths through the junk stand out, hit stream NW of control, followed elephant track in, saw SL again. Left foot got wet - wearign wool/poly blend socks, but figure I need to keep moving to keep the blood flowing and my feet warm.
4. back along elephant track, over knoll, see Judy Karpinski, and in.
5. stayed in whiter area along hill top, then cut left over to trail, up trail to long knoll. Angled up hill, across stone wall, picking way around greener patches, intermittent stream provided good attack point.
6. +09:00out to left of line, hit stone wall, barbed wire fence junction. along hillside, in and out of thick patches. Hit rocky patch just N of the streama nd knew exactly where I was, then veered left onto the hillside N of the control, rather than wrapping around the green stuff. Was looking for the spur WSW of the flag. Saw a runnner barreling from left to right in front of me and thought he was coming out of the control. Found an elephant track and headed up hill onto it, but it didn't come to a control, back and forth on it a few time. Saw some activity over by a large cliff S of me, but I was looking for an open area and a boulder. It looked like it was in the saddle by the stream and trail. Back and forth a lot - finally relocated 250 M N of the control between the 2 marshes, and that the runners I'd seen must have been Blue runners coming in from the N. Was displeased with myself. Punched just after a runner in blue suit I didn't recognize.
7. Went up to avoid the thick stuff at the base of the cliff I hadn't seen on the map, over to the trail, followed it over the first knoll, past the worst of the green, then along the top of the slope, boulder, formline knoll, stay right, saw the control form a ways out.
8. +02:30Too far right, dropped down and hit the stream before the trail. mentally kicked myself, on trail back N out of the green, then up the reentrant, broad spur, reentrant, went a bit right in some thick stuff and saw a control by a boulder. Wrong control number (342 vs 341). Figured my control must be nearby. Wandered a bit, saw Sanno Sevanto coming in from the S. Headed N and saw the control and guy in blue heading out.
9. +00:45Over to trail, decided to head in from jog in trail, looked like it would fork around a small rock face. HIt a jog in the trail and headed E, then saw SS come blasting down the trail and keep going. Woods got much thicker than they shoudl have. Back to trail, realized the trail bend was the wrong direction, jogged left when I was looking for a jog right. Headed further down the trail, saw the correct jog and an elephant track, punched just after guy in blue.
10. On line, past trail, knoll to right, reentrant to left, guy in blue pulling away a bit. Pegged it.
11. Back to trail, cross to 2d trail. guy in blue had gone further left/uphill back to trail, surprised at how well I'm still moving, especially compared to the bonking and cramping 2 weeks ago at the Traverse. Along trail, in from knoll stay right of thickest green, to form line knoll that's quite overgrown for being mapped as white. know I need to headed further S into the thick stuff. Take the plunge, see some boulders and see guy in blue, who had kept going further along the trail.
12. Get ahead of blue guy, decide to get between marshes and over to the trail. Got my otehr foot wet, but overall still fairly warm. Seemed like a long way over to the trail, but I seemed to have lost blue guy. Fairly good pace along the trail run, count trail junctions and see the contorl through an opening.
13. Through logged area and hit road right by trail crossing. Almost take first left onto wrong trail, but notice there's very few tracks on the snow, take 2d left, back to corner of field, right onto smaller trail. Someone's been skiiing - hope they had rock skiis. Not counting pace, almost overran, but saw larger depression, turned off trail and saw flag.
14. +04:00Debated going back to corner of field, but cut over instead. Reentrant was more prominent than I expected. Hilltop was quite thick and I didn't see as many tracks in the snow as I expected (thought all advanced courses would have this as last control). Floundered around a bit, didn't trust contours, saw a trail that I eventually figured out wasn't on the map, thought I was too far S. Back and forth a few times. Saw Sanno coming up the hill - she headed S, I floundered around a bit more then Sanno came blasting out, figures she must have punched, backtracked and finally saw the flag, somewhat faded and in a thicker area.
F. A good course, a good day. Thanks NEOC!!!
