Attackpoint - performance and training tools for orienteering athletes

Race Evaluation

Anza-Borrego Desert O-Fest, Day 2: Green

danf's comments - by leg

1. Used the three spurs and the knoll to the right of the purple to navigate.
2. Realized this should be a very runnable leg. Used a compass bearing initially, then ran toward the small spur just SW of the control (thinking it WAS the control initially). Spiked it.
3. Crossed the first spur and saw the saddle slightly off to the left of my bearing.
4. Time Lost: 02:00Ran along the ridge as long as I could then took a beeline toward the control. Missed on the rocky area to the left and slowed down. Realizing my mistake, I headed almost due west, and the stream of people coming from that direction confirmed my intuition. Not sure what I should have used as an attackpoint here. Could easily have been worse.
5. Raced hard to the ridge. Hesitated a little at the top, not sure exactly where along the ridge I was. Saw two knolls on the other side and hit the control well.
6. Ignored the early re-entrants and headed for the rocky spur. Hit the correct re-entrant just to the right of the control (and earthbanks). Almost headed to the next re-entrant, then realized my mistake.
7. Saw the hills in front of the control almost immediately, so navigation was easy (remembered these hills from last year's orange course). Checked several re-entrants briefly before I found the right one.
8. Time Lost: 02:00Lost the race right here (I had actually been winning, wow!). Couldn't see the spur/knoll from a distance so I just used a bearing. Once I got close, I went right past the knoll without seeing it (used the start flag to navigate, but not well enough apparently). Overshot the control by 100m, realized I was too close to the road, turned around and saw it.
