Kiki's comments - by leg
| 1. | Mass start, ran with the crowd. Tried to get a look at the map to see where to skip, but I was moving too fast to really pay much attention to the map | |
| 2. | Time Lost: 05:00 | Half followed, half read the map, with poor results. Thought I was looking for something in between streams/ditches rather than in a ditch (another misread control description, plus focusing on a knoll just slightly offset from the centre of the control circle). Ended up right of the control, headed back out of the complex drainage features and eventually found it by going in generally the right direction, not by map reading skill. |
| 3. | Minor confusion because I crossed the tiny fence before the main road, and thought it was the major fenceline. Kind of just ignored it (I didn't see the small fence on the map until after the course) and ran up the hill to the control. | |
| 4. | Time Lost: 00:30 | Slight fumble looking for the small trail that cut more directly through the green. Stopped looking for it fairly quickly and headed out to the large path. This should have been a very straightforward leg, mostly trail run, but I kept hesitating, thinking I'd gone further than I had. I guess that's the kind of leg where it would be nice to have a pace count going for peace of mind. |
| 5. | No problems here, straight to the empty pond. People standing there helped, too. | |
| 6. | A little bit of rougher stuff on this leg than what was mapped, so I ended up left of the line more than I thought, but spotted the control okay once I realized it. | |
| 7. | Time Lost: 01:00 | Jumped off the dirt road next to the hatchy green stuff but really stayed too far right of the line. Caught myself when I ended up in other erosion features, quickly corrected. |
| 8. | Time Lost: 03:00 | This was yucky. Never fully commited to going around the fence to attack from a good place, or just cutting across the blank white space of the map. Didn't help that I was half-following someone else, who in fact didn't seem to have a plan either. I'm not exactly sure where I went, just that I ended up beyond the control in the last of the erosion features north of it, and was able to hop back down from there. |
| 9. | Attackd from the big erosion ditch, dropping into the stream there. | |
| 10. | Straight up the stream. This is where Boris and I started weaving in and out of the controls together. | |
| 11. | Trail run to the open area just before and left of the pond. Took a second to realize that the trail didn't go all the way. | |
| 12. | Time Lost: 00:20 | Went straight on theis one, which involved dropping down into a rather large stream bed, deceptively small on the map, and kind of hacking out of it. Took the trail to the left when I retrieved, piece of cake and probably faster. |
| 13. | Took the trail route to the right, taking the second choice up to the ridge. | |
| 14. | Straight run... | |
| 15. | Basically went straight from the big bend in the road. Sort of confused about what was green and what wasn't, but I just aimed for the only thing that could be green and it was it... | |
| 16. | Straight down the hillside to the major track to cross the big stream, then along side it to the control. | |
| 17. | Ran to the right of the erosion features, not really knowing what to look for. Pretty obvious when you see them. They looked pretty subtle on the map. | |
| 18. | Time Lost: 04:30 | Spent quite a while in the drainage just the right of the correct one. I just wasn't paying attention running down there, thinking I'd figure it out once there, or maybe that Boris would find it right away. In any case, plenty of time wasted before I figured it out. |
| 19. | This time I knew what the erosion features looked like... | |
| 20. | Dropped into the ditch and straight across the stream, then left to the correct reentrant. Kind of brute-force, but it worked. | |
| 21. | Skip. | |
| 22. | Time Lost: 03:00 | I thought this would be a trivial trail run (part of why I chose 21 as a skip) but I couldn't really match up where I was with what was on the map, and thought I'd made a mistake, so I overran the control and had to get my bearings from the main stream. Turns out I did exactly what I had planned to do, and if I'd had a concept of distance, or been using the ridge on the right as guidance, I probably wouldn't have screwed this one up so badly. |
| 23. | Small crowd at the last control, I fell in right behind them. | |
| 24. | Scrambled up the hill, passing a few people. No navigation here. | |
| 25. | Actually ran really hard for the first time in the course. Managed to hold off the boys just behind me (but only by a hair). I hope they were pissed that they coudln't catch a girl. |
