Race Evaluation

FLO/US Team Fundraiser, Day 3: Blue

igoup

1. Plan: * Ignore other runners * Better compass work * Start conservative and clean * See where C10 is on the course and start picking up the pace Checked off depression to right of line then into C
2. Eeek! Preliminary AP is major trail junction S of control. Heading NNE crossing trails. Ran W along one to a junction to check position. Hit small trail E of the line and decided to take that all the way up and around attack coming in from the east. Fast and easy.
3. Read the veg.
4. Over hill tops looking down but I was too high and couldn't see the low hung bag. Missed and had to come back. -0:30
5. Right of the line to the C.
6.
7. Used big green thick as intermediate AP, then small trail bend, then up hill. Plan was to attack from distinct veg boundary thinking it would be a big oak grove. I couldn't pick it out and ended up first by the big double pits from the sprint and then running to the small oak grove 150m W of C. Finally got my act together and ran across the big depression to the C. -1:00
8. Sprint C1. No sweat.
9. Studying and refolding my map for the long leg. Ended up orienting my map and compass 90 off and ended up 200m to the SW. Had to relocate off trail to south. I had come across the hill just above the control but didn't go down because of the alignment error. -4:00 Shoe tape gone and shoes untied. Triple knot each.
10. Around big depression to the right. Pick up dry ditch and can run quickly just right of line for 1200m. Start my run to the finish and picking up the pace. Plan legs to C11 and C12. Take big trail to the left and plan to take little trail along pond. Gambled that it hadn't rained all that much and the water wouldn't be too high. I lost the bet. First the trail was wet. Then it was puddled. Then ankle deep. Then knee deep. Then I thought, "Alligators! Why should I trust course setters from CA and CT to know about Alligators?!" Bounced off easter pond and almost go to the wrong hill. The form line hill to the south is not easy to see with the veg and that threw me off. Suck Gu and some H20; should have done this at C9. James Scarborough comes in as I'm leaving. Resolve to try to ignore him. Time lost during swim = ??
11. Up over hill on trail, pick off thicket, come in to the control C a bit to left with JS to my right. Both go right to the C. Didn't notice that depression was only a form line and thought it would be bigger.
12. Go to second trail and run around to avoid veg. JS cuts across from the first major junction. Meet JS again on the trail just NW of the green. I loose JS as I stop to retie both shoes; have to learn that O-knot, darnit. Find my way, hesitantly, to the C.
13. Blast through veg to C.
14. AP is big depression to the left. See it from afar and spot thickets. See JS leaving from the vicinity.
15. Straight. Pick out thickes from rise 300m away and head straight to them. JS comes in a bit from the left about 200m ahead.
16. Straight, carefully, trying to be sensitive to the veg change and the clearing. Find thickets.
17. Haul through thicket gap figuring that I should be able to see the hill. Cross trail and can see control.
18. See JS heading into green, lots of green. Aim off to left and hope to be able to run right down to C. See JS running away from C.
F. Run.
