Race Evaluation

FLO/US Team Fundraiser, Day 3: Blue

tdgood

1. My goal to finish in any time less than 2 hours (about 8 min/k) Given than 15 K is farther than I have run in past 4 months this was a true long race for me. Started off running comfortably but not reading all that well. Tough to adjust back to 1:15,000 scale map. Saw a control slightly to the right and veered over to it. I had been running to the clearing and didn't realize it was on the hill.
2. +00:30The way I went probably wasn't best. The woods were open initially so I decided to straight line it and only worry about the final attack from the trail junction. As expected, I lost count of the trails and pulled up one trail short. i started off to the trail junction but the junction wasn't right. Spent some time figuring where I was then decided on the small trail left of the line. Then I left the trails for the 500 m and approached over the hill due south of the control
3. straight.
4. +08:50Straight to the trail junction, Crossed the first trail with no problem. Then Dave Onkst comes running up after clearly having been misplaced for awhile. I don't know if he through me off or not but I never saw the smaller trail so I kept going. I never saw the "spur" or the control. I continued north to the trail. Came back but still no control. Attacked from east amd didn't see it. Hit the south smaller trail and this time saw the trail. Attacked from the trail and still didn't see it. Really beginning to think the control was mishung or missing. This time I attacked from the trail junction and road 150m NE of the control. I was about 10 meters from the control before I saw it. Never did see the "spur". As I was leaving the control, Dave Onkst came running up.
5. Straight, Bounced off the both trail loop bends.
6. Straight. Dave Onkst came up while I was drinking water.
7. After the trail fiasco going to two I decided to trail the trails to seven. Dave Onkst went more straight. I took the left trail route but cut off some trail at one point. No problem getting to the control. Never Saw Dave again.
8. Spent over a minute at water stop at control seven having a goo and water. straight
9. straight.
10. +04:30Oh boy. Decided the initial step was to get the the major trail about 1/2 way there. I decided to pretty much straight line it. Went down the big depression and up the other side. I then followed one of the old trails (mapped as a ditch which made really good running. Once I hit the trail I wanted 1/2 way there it was final decision time. Since I was getting tired I decided to take the left trail all the way to the MUD Pond so I wouldn't have to think and worry about tripping. So off I went down the trail. Not moving very quickly at this point. Cut over to the small trail by the marsh only to discover that the entire area was under water. Great, now I couldn't run on the trail and had to walk through all the green slash. I kept try for about 1/2 of the distance along the marsh but the last part was just to wet and to large. My feet were now soaking wet for the rest of the course. Lost a lot of incentive after passing the marsh area. Didn't have any trouble finding the control.
11. +00:15Straight. I was a little off to the right. Not moving very fast anymore.
12. +04:00Decided I should get serious again so decided to straight line it rather than take the trail around. Bad mistake. There is a lot more green than mapped on this leg and I encountered most of it. I also do think the contours are correct in relation to the trails. I attacked fromteh trail junction to the southeast of the control and end up on a totally different part of the hill. Read the contours and came back to the control.
13. Jogged over to the control. Got my goo ready ahead of time and ate it on the way.
14. Finished my goo, enjoyed some water. Not in any real hurry. Ran by the photographer in the power line (everybody else was gone).
15. straight
16. straight
17. straight
18. +00:05suckered to the other control but didn't loose much time.
