Race Evaluation

May Daze: Red 2

1. Another very long first leg! I ran for the big hill. Went through some slowish sage brush and decided to stay in the wide open stuff. Once on top of the hill I followed the steep part of the hill until I saw the clearing with my control.
2. Ran straight at the control and spiked it.
3. Ran above the rocks until I could see the reentrant with the control then dropped down.
4. Bad compass work
Did not read control description
Not thinking clearly

Ran to the right of the hill top to the trail. Left the trail and the junction and intended to run above the steep stuff with the snow looking for the control at the bottom of the small cliffs. Ran for a little while not finding anything and looked my control sheet more closely. Oh the control is at the top of the small cliff. Turned around and found the control back in some trees.
5. Bad map reading
Confused parallel features

Fast down hill run past the lone tree. Checked off the tree, intended to hit the edge of the clearing closest to the control as an attackpoint. Saw a reentrant to the right and the line of rocks above it. Thought that it was the wrong reentrant and went left instead. Searched around in that reentrant then came back, saw the rocks and again thought I must be wrong. Finally bailed out to the lone tree, and very carefully came back in. This time I got it.
6. Bad map reading

I could see what I thought was my control feature across the reentrant. Ran for it but it was not correct. Searched around the other boulders in the area. They weren't correct either. Had a hard time interpreting the map in this area of many boulders. Eventually figured things out and found the control.
7. Long run uphill. Could see my control at the end of the line of trees. Finally, I break my string of blown controls!
8. The control is on the other side of a large impressive cliff. On the map it looks like there is an opening 300m to the left and another one 300m to the right. I pick the one on the right since it looks like it has less climb and I can see it. Uphill climb from the cliff right on to the control.
9. Stayed along the edge of the clearings until I found the big reentrant.
10. Long uphill climb to the trees. Stayed within the trees parallel to the trail until I hit the clearing with the control.
11. +00:20Ran down the hill aiming off to the linear rocky area. Didn't find the reentrant right away.
12. Ran straight at it but was a little off to the right.
13. Long uphill run to the 2 lone trees. Once in the trees bypassed the first spur onto the second. Was downhill from the control.
F. Sprint for the finish where Paula, who ran her green course in 70 minutes (a new PR), was waiting for me.
