Race Evaluation

QOC PWF Happyland: Blue

Nadim

1. I went around on the road through the cabine area west of the control, then down the broad spur.
2. I started off going a bit to the northe along the stream. Perhaps the southern route would have been faster? I speezed through the green before and after crossing the creek on stones (mostly). It was slow getting through the green on the other side. I took the trail to the main reentrant west of the control, then climbed the broad ridge between reentrants. I had to swing south a bit but I turned and spiked the control.
3. +00:45I went straight thorugh the green and ended-up at the 3 cairns. I took my time reading it but my compass pointed more northerly. At the bottom of the reentrant, I found an ancient faded Suunto control hanging, I then turned SW and got to the control.
4. I went straightish crossing the stream. At a bend, I moved upward, between the green, and into the correct reentrant. As green as it was there, I was glad that I hit it correctly.
5. +00:45Straight up toward the road, I cut right just a bit to come off it where I thought the curve began. This put me more west on the map than I thought. I corrected to center the saddle but not enough. I drifted over on the right side but realizing it part way down, I came back up and into the correct reentrant.
6. Keeping on the right side of the line, but going fairly straight, I ran well. I slowed turning left up the reentrant. I skirted south of the green blob, then cut up to the NW. I saw a gully and moved over to it. It was lined-up in the right direction. Getting into it and stopping where it ended, I climbed out, read my map and looked behind me (west), where I could just see the control in the next ditch.
7. Back where I'd just come from when approaching #6, I stayed high, along the line. Crosssing creek at the formline, I then kept straight through the light green thorns and spiked the control.
8. Straight with a little hesitation to read when rounding the spur after the creek.
9. After a drink at #8, I crossed the road going straight. I hit the green and was tempted to go through to keep a straight line. I found an unmapped road but it was too green so I quickly backed out and ran left of the green initially. I kept straight and threaded some mottled green but I was getting pushed further left. The green opened up so I cut right, feeling that the distance was right too. I had also noticed a dip in the ridge. I saw Kathleen Lennon approaching from the SE. We both paused at the top of a gulley system. I cut right and followed quickly along the gully to the control.
10. I climbed out of the gully, and along it until reaching a bend. There I crossed and ran on bearing across the hill. I dropped right into the ditch with the control.
11. Getting out of #10, I stayed high to avoid the green. It seemed to me that I had been here last year so I was wiser. I moved along on the trail okay, crossed the dam, then went straight up. It was light green, not medium as mapped. Going along the hillside, I was concerned and hesitated. However I kept going and spiked it.
12. I remembered the woods being thicker than mapped for going straight so I went up to the field. I passed another runner and saw Peggy starting her Red course. On the road I ate a Gu but lost concentration. I realized I was getting farter past the water tower than was optimal. I started in where I was but doubted my location. I cut back east and dropped along the wrong ditch. I had to correct to the west, and followed a ditch and runner up. As I got to the control, I realized it was Greg Lennon ahead of me.
13. +00:30I ran straight up to the road. Remembering that Tom Strat had fast leg going straight rather than taking the road around last year, I cut across. I think Greg went around. I came out back to the road at the formline knoll. Seeing the green ahead, I cut right for a little, to get around it. Somewhere around the stream/ditch junction, I got a stick in my eye. It broke and I couldn't get it out. I got it to where it wasn't hurting after a bit (I later got it out before I went to bed--it had been tucked up in the socket). I went over the rise from there to spike the control.
14. +02:00Going straight, I was right on line to the knoll. I cut around to the right since it was green. Going straight after that, I was a bit left of the line I suppose. I saw the old road feature and presumed it was the linear black dot thing on the map. My compass told me to go cross it thought the road did lead toward the control. Because It was green and I could see a clearing ahead, I followed my compass. The field I got to was not the right one. I wandered through 2 more before dropping downhill and wandering over to the reentrant NE of the control. From there, I attacked successfully and wondered how I had not seen the control earlier.
15. +08:00Heading out across the reentrant and getting through the green, I was about to open up my stride when I got wrapped in a thorny vine. It wasn't the first of the day but when I twisted my way out, I conciously lost track of where I was. This was probably fatigue related. I ran down crossing the first stream, then after crossing the second soon later, I stopped thinking I had passed the control--there was a similar stream junction past the control on the map. It didn't seem like I'd gone far enough but I had enough doubt that I backed-up and crossed the streams again. In reality, I was making a parallel error with the stream junction west of 15, only half way there. I wandered up the stream to its end, then started to bail out to the road. Unfortunate for me, I came across another control on a spur with some rocks. This was the Red course control on a carirn but I figured it was a spur sought of #15. I went north, over a ridge and saw open white woods leveling out ahead. I realized this was too far so I cut east toward the road again. There at a stream, I found the only boulder around and realized I was well west of the control. I continued east through slow sapplings, the hit the stream. I didn't see it and wanted to make sure I didn't leave the control above me. I climbed along the stream a little then dropped to the control.
16. I was not happy about my mess at #15 but happy to have a clearer purpose ahead at #16. I ran the downslope quickly, the cut right after the big reentrant on my right.
17. I debated going left and low but figured I'd have to climb around some green any way. I climbed to the right to the field, then came off the corner. I went straight through the green and spiked the control dead-on. Others were punching.
18. +00:50Leaving #18, I couldn't find the trail so I cut through the woods. I came out in a cabin area and took a trail toward the water. I hadn't seen the marshy inlet, so I lost time getting around that. I climbe the next ridge, passing Kathleen Lennon, crossed the driveway road, then dropped down again. Again, I had to get around a marshy inlet. I used an unmapped but overgrown road and saw Sam Listwak approaching from the NW. I had some hesitation approaching because I couldn't see the ditch or control.
19. Up but to the right to avoid the green. I hit the trail and took that to the field.
F. It was hard to get going but eventually, half-way there, I ran hard.
