Race Evaluation

NEOC Spring Rock Festival and Intercollegiates: Red 2

jima's comments - by leg

1. Veered too far right right out of the start. HIt the trail by the intersections, ran to the junction in the light green, then took the right fork. Followed the edge of the green, past the boulder and saw the thicket from quite a ways out. THe intermittent stream up through the light green almost looked like a trail. Maybe the left route would have been better - angle to the trail, and follow it up to the stone walls?? Running slow - not feeling lighton my feet.
2. Down through the open areas, cut over to the jeep trail. Distracted by Lex B., cut in a bit early. Over the stone wall, skirt the light green and in. Caught by cadet who started 2 minutes after me - Allen Griffith?
3. Chasing after AG, past he stone wall corner, between it an stony ground. Saw control from a ways out.
4. AG still in sight. Down into the marshy reentrant, around the end of the cliff, almost went too low.
5. AG pulling away. Decide to stay high and approach from above, avoiding the rocky slope. Head between the end of the impassable cliff and the dark green - deer path right through where I want to go. Down reentrant staying on right side - terrain flattens out. See Boulder from a ways out - see AG angling in from the left, punch shortly after him.
6. Slightly right of the line, above the rockiest sections and the dark green splotches. Hit the second stony area, see broad reentrant up to the right. AG still in sight. See 3 large boulders, small reentrant, AG heading up and to the right - too far right? Look left and see a control by a boulder, think I'm a bit short, but check it out anyways - it's mine. Stealth out to not alert others in the area...
7. Time Lost: 00:45Plan to hit the trail and foloow the stone wall, but get too far right. Follow the top of the ridge, picking off marshes. A bit uncertain and hesitant as I get closer, looking for the broad reentrant 75 m N of the control. See AG blasting up the hill, reverse his tracks to the control.
8. Time Lost: 05:30An easy leg poorly executed. Across the top, marsh on left, knoll on right, see nose and head down it. Go to right to see if I can catch someone coming out of the control, but no luck. Think I got one spur too far right, and thougth I was left. Searched the hillside N of the control, up and down, saw some others, but it looked like they were still searching. Finally focused on the marsh to the W and th green areas. headed S and hit it.
9. Time Lost: 03:00Flustered and pissed. Take the low route out of the contorl, following the easier footing by the stream/marsh. Cut up through the light green by the end of the marsh, and lose contact with the map. Head NE to hit the trail, relocated off a rock face (wasn't the one I thought it was) and angled into the trail perpendicular to the one I just crossed. Relocated, back over the hill top and in.
10. Time Lost: 01:00Downn through the thick green, over the marsh and angle up the hill. Follow a couple of old trails - a few less rocks. Get pulled too far right. Hit trail by the bend/ stone wall end. A few seconds to relocate and kick myself, then over the hill, past the trail, boulder and in.
11. Out of the control the same way I went in, hit the trail by the boulder and decide to take it through the green, then follow the stone walls down to the N end of the clearings. Would havebeen smarter to go around the N end of the green to the trail...
12. Too far left of the line, hit the trail and follow it to the control. Running out of steam
13. Angle to trail, jog down to intersection with larger path, cut straight over hillside. Hit trail to left of control.
14. See Bob Lux ahead of me - not making up a lot of ground.
15. Up hill, slogging... A Norwich cadet nearby and another runner in blue.
16. Pretty much straight - Cadet and runner in blue go further right. Blue in and out, cadet ahead of me.
17. Along bottom of field, cadet pulling away a bit.
18. Rough compass, a bit right. Hit by S end of larger marsh, up small trickle, then up to control.
19. Stay high for a while then angle down.
20. Not much left. 10+ minutes in mistakes, 10-15 minutes lost from not being in shape and running slow...
