Race Evaluation

SLOC - Babler State Park: Red

ebuckley

1. Straight. Had no idea what I was looking for, but it turned out to be a pretty prominent feature (old chimney about 4m high).
2. Probably not the best route, although I moved OK. Over the big spur to the trail junction at the saddle, then the trail down to the road and straight to the control.
3. Straight, grunt.
4. A little right to miss the tip of the spur 300m before control. Met Gary Thompson at the control.
5. +01:00Might have lost focus having seen Gary. Went too far right and dropped into the reentrant system north of the control. Corrected quickly.
6. Out to the road along the edge of the park. Crossing the stream coming back to the control was a little slow, but I'm sure this was the fast route.
7. Straight, grunt. Met Rudy Schwartz at the contorl.
8. +01:30Stopped to drink some water and then blasted off after Rudy. Drifted too far left trying to miss the tip of the spur and wound up on the road. Dumb, but not too bad for the worst mistake of the race. Flag was hung about 150m west of control circle. This didn't cost any time, since the approach was along the stream. Met Ken DeBeer at the control.
9. Straight, grunt.
10. Straight, not sure why this one is slow.
11. Straight, figuring the reentrant was big enough to spot from a distance. It was. Back was really hurting at this point, so I had to walk the hills slowly.
12. Great route choice leg. Crossed to spur north of 11 and ran along that. Then down the power line cut, across the field to the trail behind the pool. Took the trail to the control.
F. Didn't push the final climb because my back was still hurting.
