Race Evaluation

US Short and Long Championships: Green X 1 (Short)

Charlie

1.
2. Straight, stopping for a bit to read at the intermittent stone wall before the first reentrant. A bit low, but right in.
3. Drifted right of ther first building, then under the first hill across the parking lot and across the second one. Could see the hill and the bag, but stopped for a bit, because the bag was behind a tree when I got there and I couldn't see it.
4. Straight, drifting a bit right, but correcting when I could see the stream and the road
5. A bit right of line, going over hill before trail, then up the steeper part of reentrant and follow it to control
6. W to trail, then W to trail just N of control and in. Hung up a bit in green.
7. Straight. Could see the cliff from the powerline and stayed right of the small ruined building and the cliff.
8. +01:00N to trail and around past steep gully to bend where trail heads NW. In on pace and compass, but lost track of the map scale and stopped too soon. Then looking for a saddle, but went past and had to circle back.
9. NW to trail near boulder, then N on trail until it bends E. In on compass and keeping the ditch on my right. Caught up to Peter Goodwin just before control.
10. +02:00Plan was basically to follow the red line, but drifted right and high, and then crossed the spur after the trail and ended up in the green marshy stuff. Pushed through, but lost a lot of time. Then N on trail until bend to the east and in pretty straight. Also lost a bit when I got to the flag and thought it had the wrong code. A little panic, but recovered.
11. A little time turning my map and figuring out where to go, then straight - easy.
12. +00:30Planned on going SW to trail, but drifted right and through some thick stuff and to top of steep bank. Ran into a hemlock branch, to unfortunate cosmetic effect. Then got to the stream and had to squint at the map for a bit to realize the control was on the other side.
