Race Evaluation

US Short Course Champs - Red: Red

jima

1. Follow the streamers, almost over run when they turn left, see photographer past bag before I see the bag. Grimace for effect.
2. Picking my way through the green, wander a bit right. Hit trail, what am I looking for? Look left and see rootstock, that must be it.
3. +03:30head left of the line. Down one reentrant, angeled enough that the 2d one isn't much of an up and down. Edge of light green on my right, collapsed stone wall on my right, over spur, reentrant, 2d spur, then for some reason I start curving right. See a bit of a reentrant and think I'm S of the control, so I head N, see 2 rootstocks and ask well why aren't those on the map?? Legs fully engaged, brain completely disengaged, I continue alonmg the top of the drop off, looking down every reentrant and wondering where the flag is. Finally see a flag, but it's paced wrong and has the wrong control code. Stop legs, reengage brain, figure out wehre I am and head back and get it.
4. Frustrated. Don't want to drop down over the stream to get to the pavement - opt for straight line. Fairly good runability, others coming in from other directions help lead me right in.
5. In a train chugging along. Forget to take split in the rush at the flag.
6. +00:15Head a bit right of the line, realize error and correct uphill.
7. Beeline to field, head up hill from the corner where others have gone before. Trail, turn in just before formline spur.
8. S to trail, over bridge, keep on trail, turn in as vegetation eases. Hesitate then read the contours carefully and turn right into it.
9. +02:30Head out of control in wrong direction - SE instead of SW. When I don't hit the trail quickly, correct, and hit it on wrong side of bend, cut through, and follow it. Momentary confusion when I hit a junction. Take the road less travelled, pass stream, large boulder, see island in marsh to my right and angle up. Most of the way to the top when I see boundary markers and think I've gone too far W. Head east, but nothing fits. Go a bit further and realize I'm on the flat area between slopes 150m E of the control. Work my way back, much more carefully, and stumble onto it thanks to others in the area.
10. +03:30Follow the top of the hill, trying to pace count, hit boundary, stop one cliff short, get confused, turn back and check out some rock faces lower down. Argue with the control description - is it the middle cliff top to bottom, or along the top of the slope. Finally slow down, head back, read the contour details and get it.
11. +00:10Quite pissed at myself, head off after some others who are just ahead of me. think I'm looking for a rock face onthe slope in front of me. See others at the top, and a water jug in someone's hand. Quick look at the map, see my error and up I go.
12. Hit tral, follow it down a bit, then cut over just above the rocky ground. Around cliff end and there it is.
13. Angle out to right to clearing and trail, left on trail, over bridge, cut right, over stream and pick up the top of the slope. Merge with a cluster of others, some higher, some lower. See form line spur, and Michael Commons sputtering. Over the spur and see it.
14. Wary of the green, so opt for the trail route. Head N, hit the trail at junction and keep going N. Follw it to next junction, go right, pick up the dry ditch and reentrant on the left and follwo the spur down. Hesitate before dropping the last steep section, can't see the control. Look at the map and control description says it should be at the very bottom, so drop down and it's right there, on the other side of the tree I'd been holding onto. Trail to left and going in from the bend would probably have been faster.
15. slight climb, cross trail, vague reentrant, into the green, keep going, see it down a bit to my left.
16. hustle down hill, hope I can figure out which trail I hit and turn the correct way.
