Falcon Fundy O-Fest: M Sprint

jfredrickson

1. +02:30Headed straight out to the road and ran up it a ways. It came up so fast though that I had trouble keeping track of exactly how far I had gone on the road, so I got nervous and decided to cut into the woods to avoid going too far. I ended up cutting into the vegetation boundary and going through the light green to the open white space in the middle of the green. I finally realized what I had done, but it didn't really help since there was a wall of the thickest pine trees I had ever seen between me and the control. It took me a while to squeeze through that wall, and from there it was an easy shot into the control. It was frustrating to start off with such a big mistake, but I put it behind me and focused on the controls ahead.
2. This was just a straight compass shot to the stone wall and the visibility was good enough to see the control from a distance.
3. +00:50I compassed right down to the northern gully, but I hadn't read the control closely enough and I didn't realize that it was in the second gully. I was a bit confused not to see the control, so I cut over the gully to the second stream. Then I decided to check the control description and realized that it was in the second gully. I could have easily avoided this mistake by checking the control description earlier in the leg, but I was just too focused on running fast downhill through the tough terrain that I was just out of focus.
4. This one was just a straight compass shot to the cairn. Visibility was good enough to see it froma distance.
5. +00:45I strayed a bit right on this control, and saw somebody up by the power line. For some reason I let this distract me and started running off in that direction thinking it was the vegetation boundary I was looking for. I quickly realized that I was running along the vegetation boundary I was looking for and that the control was in the other direction along it. This was just another example of me running too fast and not focusing on the navigation.
6. +00:20I stayed left on this one to avoid the thicker green and hit the upper field. From there I ran to the lower field and cut into the woods to the stream thinking I was looking for a cliff along the stream. I then took a closer look at the map and realized it must be a bridge across the stream and that the control was on the far side. Again I was just not looking at my map closely enough.
7. +00:10I was a little more careful on this leg, but almost too much so. I stopped half-way through it to check a vegetation patch along the side of the field before quickly realizing I hadn't gone far enough yet.
8. +01:00This leg was just a disaster. I totally ignored my compass coming out of the control thinking it was an easy shot to the field, but I headed off way too far left, I guess getting pulled by the field until I hit the little field just west of the start. I realized something was wierd at that point and took a closer look at the map. I quickly realized where I was and ran the trail back towards the start and then cut down to the field and across to the control.
9. +00:05I hit this one right on, but didn't see the control right away, so I hesitated inside the circle. I didn't lose more than 5 seconds though.
10. +00:30For some reason I though this one would be a bit uphill from the stream, so I cut up to the little hill just to the right of the control. I checked my map there and realized what I had done, and cut west off the hill but still didn't see the control. Then I spotted it a bit farther off to the north. It felt like it was a bit too high, but I can't be sure since I had screwed it up so bad.
11. This was just straight out to the road and then up and into the control.
F. A quick sprint downhill.
