Race Evaluation

Hammond Pond: Memory-O (orange)

levitin

1. Left at Y, Left at Y, Right at Y around cliff until stone wall. Bushier on the hilltop than mapped.
2. Down to big trail and take 1st right path ignoring the one at an obtuse angle. Travel along path until path intersects depression and follow depression through green. Got confused while executing this plan, when I missed the depression and ran too far on the trail. I came back to the wide trail and ran in on the next trail north, until I saw others.
3.
4.
5. Roadside N to EW trail, then stayed low across the boulder field, above the swamp until I reached the cliffy hill.
6. Ran on a bearing, and even so, I overshot, crossing the wide trail a 2nd time. Coming back toward 6 and 5 from the off-the-map higher, more-massive hill, I saw the circled hill.
7. Trail S, jog R, continue on SW trail, noting that I could also run in the middle of the reentrant if it were open enough (it wasn't). The flag was quite a bit closer to the trail than the pit is marked.
8. SW on trail, planned to take 1st S trail up, then stay below the cliff line. Actually took the 2nd S trail around, got confused when I saw Pete F, but I knew by the nearby marsh that I was 1 trail off and I wanted to be at the other trail.
9. Counted trail intersections, knowing if I went badly off that the long cliff I wanted to attack from was N of the N tip of the large marsh. Overran the cliff, which I had thought would be closer to the trail (in distance and altitued), but when I recognized the cliff, the attack was straightforward.
10. I had actually practiced this leg the day before at home, trying to envision how I'd run a leg at an earlier meet. Down to pavement, into the woods at the end of the thick strip, then down the spur to the tip.
11. Trails just R of the line. At the foot of the major cliff, I picked my way carefully up it, and continued on a rough compass to the peak.
