Rocky Mountain 1000 Day: Opening Sprint

Charlie

1. Breathing like a draft horse well before the crest of the hill. Climbed up to the corner of the building before seeing the flag down below. Someone much faster came in from the right side of the building and was in and out
2. Saw George off in the distance, which gave me a line. A couple of speedsters went by. A little further than I thought getting in - not used to 15000, and having a hard time seeing it. Was just a touch left, but got there fine.
3. This one, on the other hand, came up sooner than I thought.
4. Just kept going to the last rock. Several folks out in front.
5. Right side of the aspen thicket. This was the only leg I hesitated much on. There were folks ahead, but also folks drifting off to the right and coming back. Tom Carr and some others passed me here for the second time, so obviously had been on an excursion.
6. Left of the thicket in the depression and straight up. Seemed pretty easy.
7. Another one that showed up awfully fast. Just about when I was thinking about looking for it I was zooming (relatively speaking) by the bare rock knoll, and the flag ahead.
8. Bear off to the left to make sure I hit the clearing. A little crowd at the flag.
9. Unmapped trail out of the clearing. Several folks going off to the right a bit. Headed to mapped trail with George and saw people going all different ways. Ethan Childs and somebody else went by at high speed and kept going straight at the bend in the trail. I took a bearing from there, but they came back and got me.
10. Easy
11. Took a higher line than some folks out ahead - maybe I picked up a little ground that way. Punched behind Ethan and Mary Jo
F. Mary Jo showed surprising speed and pulled away in the stretch! I could not have run this fast without all the breadcrumbs along the way. Not that I wouldn't have found the controls, just that I would have hesitated much more and seeing people gave me confidence.
