Race Evaluation

Rocky Mountain 1000 Day: Stampede

ParkSchool's comments - by leg

1. With pack, roughly contouring around hill, dropped 1 contour to control after hitting wooded area.
2. Contoured, following crowd.
3. Up hill on line. Saw others crossing path to control #33 on other loop.
4. Rocky features visible after crossing crest. Passed another control from 2nd loop.
5. Same contour as at start.
6. Up slope at slight angle. A little shaky near flag despite having seen it before.
7. Straight over saddle. This time previous siting useful.
8. Feature again visible from top of hill.
9. Lower contour this time.
10. Bad route choice

Consciously decided to navigate off road to get feel of terrain, even though road seemed logical choice. Crossed road W of trail junction (unintentionally) then worked way up hil and roughly contoured around. Hit large reentrant too high, but corrected without much time loss.
11. Bad map reading
Time Lost: 00:30
Walking now up long hill. Dropped off too far to R before crossing big reentrant.
12. Again up long slope, but this time making up some time on group in front of me. Hit second elevation in saddle, then to control checking out boulder on the way
13. On line, climbed up L side of reentrant.
14. Bad map reading
Time Lost: 01:30
Tried to take direct line to separate myself from others in pack, but lost bearing and drifted down steep slope prematurely.
15. Aimed high to avoid some climb, but wound up crossing unmarked fence twice. Passed by Carl Childs on way up hill.
16. Motivated to catch Carl, had good downhill leg.
17. Passed Carl early in leg.
18. Feeling grateful that there was no more climb.

Total Time Lost - 00:02:45
