R Lower Leg, Stress Fracture

2006-02-18 - 2006-08-09

severity grade: 3

2/18/06: Aggrevated tendinitis above R ankle during desert trail run in Arizona. Taking 800mg ibuprophen and ice massage 3xday. Can't run on it for at least a few weeks. 5/3/06 UPDATE: MRI showed a right femoral nondisplaced stress fracture, not tendinitis. Now must limit weight bearing. 7/5/06 UPDATE: Still had pain when ortho doc pressed on fracture site. While normal walking doesn't seem to aggrevate it, he recommended just continuing the bike and eliptical for training now.

Today I had an x-ray and revisited the ortho doc. Things look good and I got the go ahead to restart training. Yippiiee!! The process will be slow, starting with walking one mile on the treadmill and building up 10% a week until I can walk 4 miles without discomfort. Then I can start some running: walk 1 mile, run 1 mile, walk antoher, etc. I'm hopfully on my way back! Some changes to think about: no running on cement for long periods (I did this for my usual 3 mile run, 3x a week) and no more running through the desert. I think this is what triggered the fracture but maybe not. My feet were pronating and struggling to get firm footing the whole race (in Arizona in February). Also , I had changed my cushion inserts right before that. I have since went back to the old kind I used before with the midsole support.
