L Foot, Other

2006-06-05 - present

severity grade: 2

left foot numbness, progressed from occassional to almost every run. pain most noticeable when standing on the ball of my foot and pushing off laterally toward my right side. also some pain in my right foot when i do this, but not as bad. from volleyball and not running? maybe a stress fracture, I really need to see a doctor

saw chiropractor on july 8th-ish - said I need orthotics (footmaxx) and stability shoes, said the pain in the side of my foot was tendonitis, said the pain was in the wrong place for it to be a stress fracture (usually above the inside ankle bone or in the second to third metatarsals counting from the outside)

saw podiatrist on july 20th. confirmed the diagnosis of tarpal tunnel syndrome. recommended (plaster cast) orthotics. my insurance doesn't seem to cover orthotics period even though they cover accupuncture

7/23 put in trish's superfeet (a size smaller than mine) and combined with the recent minimal running, it seemed to help. my foot hasn't been numb in nearly two weeks, but i still feel the tendonitis, even when walking for extended periods. i still need to get stability shoes

8/29 posterior tibial tendonitis? The posterior tibial tendon passes behind the medial malleolus and attaches to the navicular bone.

5/10/07 - okay, there is constant irritation around my medial malleolus (if that's the bony protuberance on my ankle) which indicates that the doctors are right. I admitted this to myself probably over six months ago, but since I haven't run since November, I couldn't bring myself to pay $400+ for orthotics. But now I will spring for them.

6/17 I've had the orthotics for two weeks now roughly and I think they've made a big difference. The numbness still shows up on very sandy runs (like Torrey Pines) but I haven't experienced any from harder surfaces, even on significant hills. In addition, the orthotics seem to help somewhat with my calf problems as well. I suppose I should take this off my "injury" list.

7/29/08 It never did go away, even after months of complete rest. I suspect that what I have referred to as "ankle splints," pain in the medial tendon(s) about 5-10cm above the medial malleolus (not behind the tibia) may well be associated with the tibialis posterior or other deep posterior compartment muscles (flexor digitorum/hallucis longus) on both ankles. I want to start better recording the various treatments I try, so I'm pulling this entry out of hibernation.

I'm doing strengthening exercises for my posterior tibial tendon and feet in general (including balancing exercises). I understand that I'll probably never "truly" recover, but this is just something I'll have to deal with; maybe it just means avoiding running on soft sand.
