severity grade: 3
Sprained my right ankle during 2006 Boise Metrogain. It happened about 7 miles into the 9.25 mile orienteering meet.
I still ran/hobbled/ jogged to the finish and then iced my angle immediately. Now on a ibuprofen, icing, etc protocol and will stay off my foot for the next couple of days.
After 10 weeks, I have rested and done some physical therapy (ASTYM), but I will probably be injured for at least 4 more weeks. This is a bad sprain.
Recovered after 16+ weeks, see resolution below:
My PT Lynn Johnson popped my Talas bone back in place on Feb 2nd and for the last 8 days my ankle feels much better. He says that it's common for the bone to get misplaced and not be treated. If you have this in the future look for a PT that will manipulate the ankle (like a chiropractor). It only took two session at less than 15
minutes each to feel much less pain.
I had ASTYM physical therapy to help with the nerve damage pain, an ankle brace from my doctor, but Johnson's adjustment was the final thing to get me back into racing shape.
It is so great after 16+ weeks to have runs without pain! I'm still a little tight, but an am so grateful to have this ankle sprain recovered. I will probably wear an ankle brace for the next year to avoid another ankle sprain like this.
