Tuesday Jul 31

Orienteering 43:54 [3] *** 3.75 km (11:42 / km)
rhr:49
a short course around on one of the training maps. Messed up a few of the legs, but felt fine reading the map. First time running on 1:10000 here. Stanislav says hes putting me on first-leg for the relay&hadnt planned on that.

Monday Jul 30

Orienteering race (race) 1:14:19 [4] *** 8.8 km (8:27 / km)
classic qualification. A pretty good run& I dont think I could have run much faster. I started out really cautiously; I followed trails and roads almost entirely to the first 3 controls. I think that was a good idea since these woods are much slower (for me anyway) than the roads. I also felt somewhat afraid to run in the woods at the beginningfor fear of getting into a navigationally difficult area and losing time. But I didnt make any mistakes at all, Im happy about that. Looking at my route choices afterwards, I dont think I lost much time there either.

I would have had to run 62 minutes in order to qualify (top 30) in my heat. Dont have the legs for it at the moment
Running (warmup/cooldown) 16:00 [3] 2.0 mi (7:59 / mi)

Sunday Jul 29

Orienteering 17:00 [2] *** 1.89 km (9:00 / km)
17 minutes jogging at the model event. The only reason I went was to see the start procedure, which wasnt actually modeled. Mostly running on trails, visited the first two controls, and the marked refreshment route between.

Friday Jul 27

Orienteering 36:00 [2] *** 2.7 km (13:20 / km)
control picking in some model terrain. Walked the first 8 controls, and jogged the rest.

Thursday Jul 26

Orienteering 44:56 [4] *** 4.78 km (9:24 / km)
some of the team did a test race today on the map from the pre-woc games last year. I ran the womens course at a moderately hard effort. (warm up on the road-run to first control) I remember some areas of the map. The terrain was more open than yesterday, but still pretty physical. There were quite a few paths beaten down where people had been though before&much faster if you can follow one of those, otherwise youre always picking your feet up much higher to clear the crap on the ground. I felt fine technically, a small mistake on one of the controls, but good otherwise. I cant really move through this terrain quickly enough to get behind in the map reading. I probably wont have any more real training sessions before the classic; as long as Im well rested (and thereby thinking clearly) the navigation should go smoothly.

Running (cooldown) 3:00 [2] 0.38 mi (7:53 / mi)

Wednesday Jul 25

Orienteering 36:51 [3] *** 4.2 km (8:46 / km)
arrived in tampere this morning after the overnight ferry. Feeling tired from sleeping on the floor. Hadnt really eaten anything until after training today.

a short loop at one of the training areas. Forest here is a lot less open than I remember. Terrain felt tough, but maybe just because I hadnt had a nap yet. No problems with the controls anyway.

Note
first two o-ringen maps uploaded here

Monday Jul 23

Running (warmup) 8:00 [2] 1.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
forgot to cool down today...the showers were much closer.
Orienteering race (race) 34:30 [4] *** 4.93 km (7:00 / km)
ran Direct8 today because I wanted to get some short-course/1:10,000 practice. (been on 1:15 for the last few weeks) the terrain was rougher and more intricate than yesterday, and probably the most difficult area of the week. I had two small mistakes, one (#5) due to a hiding control (ran by 3m on the left and did a quick loop before coming back), and another (#9) in the middle of a leg. Maybe 90s lost total. Only a few minutes ahead of Anna Bogren (gold medal, WOC93 Short)! Ahr:172

Feeling like I will be in good condition for the WOC next week; strong navigationally, good speed in the forest, no injuries, otherwise healthy (so far Ive managed to avoid contracting the sore throat/fever that Ross, Samantha, and Suzanne all had when they stayed with us on Friday&fingers crossed). Arriving in Finland Wednesday morning&have to resist the urge to spend a lot of time in the forest there.

Sunday Jul 22

Running (warmup/cooldown) 17:00 [2] 2.13 mi (7:59 / mi)
9 mins warmup, 8 cooldown (on the way to the shower)
Orienteering race (race) 48:46 [4] *** 6.82 km (7:09 / km)
o-ringen day1. Im not really entered this year because of WOC, so Im just running direct (entry on the day) categories. Today I did Direct 9. it went pretty well, I had only one (1min) mistake. I was actually trying to practice pacing myself, so I was surprised to have run that fast. It feels like its getting much easier to move through this mossy rock terrain. I guess its starting to be something like my home territory. Among other WOC team celebrity appearances in this class were James Scarborough (46min) and winner JimmyBirklin.com (37mins)

Saturday Jul 21

Note
o-ringen is close this year. Took us like half an hour on the commuter rail to get there this afternoon. We watched the mass-start eliteseriefinal, which was set up with a big-screen tv and cameras in the forest.

Friday Jul 20

Orienteering (sortof) 1:02:00 [2] *** 6.89 mi (8:59 / mi)
(time estimated, I stopped my watch somewhere) Dan and Spike visiting today. drew some controls all around lil-jansskogen and ran to them. We only had two maps though so we had to switch off. Interesting story though, I managed to get lost when I was following dan. I let him get a little to far ahead and then he went over a hill around a corner or something. I didnt really have any idea where they were going, so after running around yelling for a while, I just went home (though that was rather interesting in itself without a map). The others who thought I was dead or something spent a good amount of time looking around for me (sorry about that guys!) though their concern was admittedly due to the fact that I had the keys&

Thursday Jul 19

Orienteering (training course) 41:17 [3] *** 5.1 km (8:06 / km)
Still raining again this morning. took the T south to Nacka for a wet run. Drew a short-ish course through intricate marshy stuff. This is a pretty nice/big map, and so far weve run on less than 1/5 of it. At 1:15000, it took a few controls to get used to the dense level of detail again. The cool wet weather felt very nice to run in. Not working hard at all, though moving relatively fast; I guess thats a good sign. I really want to be well-rested for WOC so I can concentrate on navigating and not dragging my ass up the hills. Ahr:155
Note
maps from today and two races in hungary uploaded in the usual place.

Wednesday Jul 18

Running (fartlek) 48:00 [3] 6.4 mi (7:30 / mi)
its raining today&feeling very lazy. More specifically, not motivated to plan any training in the forest for myself. That seems like something a coach would do if I had one.

Did some laundry today, so we would have clean clothes to wear stomping through the mud. 48 minutes of running on the trails around lappis, following a trail-line-o that was already drawn on our maps. 4x 2-3 minute harder intervals included during the middle, sometimes in places where the line made lots of fast turns. It was actually quite brain-intensive, seems like good training for sprint-o and fast map reading. An interesting workout for trail-infested maps (lots of those in boston) Ahr:159

Tuesday Jul 17

Running 26:23 [3] 3.25 mi (8:07 / mi)
arrived back in Stockholm this evening. Got that funny Im coming home and now I can (at least sort-of) understand what random people are saying feeling. There was a really big track meet at the stadium down the street. Quite a few American superstars there anyways. We didnt get back in time to go, though we did catch the very end of it on TV at T-Centralen. We went for an easy run down valhallavägen, and saw the last people leaving. ahr:144

Sunday Jul 15

Orienteering race (race) 53:00 [4] *** 8 km (6:38 / km)
JWOC relay day. It was very-very hot today, as the organizers forcasted. The Americans all had good runs.

The coaches race was later this year, after all the awards at about the hottest time of the day. They also gave the option to run the mens or womens course (usually its just the women), so naturally I had to run the mens so as not to be declared wimpy. It would have been nice to warm up, but they never said when it was going to start until 5 minutes before. the coaches maps were also forked, as we discovered eventually. I had one error of 45-60s, problems reading open/semi-open boundaries.

8km, 53 minutes (including beer-chugging at the spectator control), that time would have put me right about in the middle of the relay competitors, though it was cooler when they ran. Ahr:177

Saturday Jul 14

Running (warmup/cooldown) 15:00 [2] 1.88 mi (7:57 / mi)
Orienteering (sprint) 13:09 [4] *** 2.4 km (5:29 / km)
JWOC rest day. We spent some time in the morning wandering around Miskolc, its been really hot today.

Park-o race in the afternoon. 2.4k, 13:09. (12th; winner was ~12min) had mistakes on the first two controls, maybe 45-60s total. Problems mostly due to getting used to 1:5000, though in the case of the first control, it was the sketchy mapping of my attackpoint (trail corner) in relation to the control feature. Overran the second one by 40m or so. After that it was all good. ahr:180

Friday Jul 13

Running (trail) 26:00 [3] 3.25 mi (7:59 / mi)
running around the event center, with a map we tore out of the back page of the JWOC bulletin. We think this is the area for the park-o race tomorrow, so we scoped it out accordingly.

Wednesday Jul 11

Orienteering 1:15:00 [2] *** 7.5 km (10:00 / km)
JWOC short qualification day. Ran on a map close to our accommodation with boris and a ukranian guy Sergey who didnt race today. They cant afford to enter all the races. The area was really steep, and we spent pretty much the whole time contouring on a few legs of a training course. It was taking to long, so we skipped a bunch that were way up the hill. Ahr:144

Tuesday Jul 10

Orienteering 48:00 [3] *** 5.65 km (8:30 / km)
JWOC model event. Ran around the model map at an easy pace. There were a few controls that were sketchily mapped. ahr: 148

Sunday Jul 8

Orienteering 20:00 [1] *** 1.54 km (12:59 / km)
walking through some controls while keeping time on the juniors for a short test course.

Saturday Jul 7

Orienteering 20:00 [2] *** 2 km (10:00 / km)
hanging TP streamers for the dudes.
Orienteering 37:00 [3] *** 5.25 km (7:03 / km)
ran a training course pretty easy, stopping sometimes so as to not give the controls away to the girls who were still running. Walked the last 200m while carrying a large mushroom back for boris (he doesnt like those very much)
Running 17:00 [3] 2.27 mi (7:29 / mi)
running to and from a course the juniors did yesterday.
Orienteering 51:16 [3] *** 6.67 km (7:41 / km)
There were controls at most of the locations, though some had disappeared, and some places I drew the wrong circle. ahr: 162

Friday Jul 6

Running 33:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:15 / mi)
a long travel day. 4 hours by plane then 4 by bus. Its surprisingly nice and cool (especially in the evenings) up in the hills here in hungary.

33 minutes of running in the forest and trails around our hotel for the training camp. The forest is really open, and the hills are huge.

Thursday Jul 5

Note
rhr:49. I'm melting...at 31c in the shade, stockholm tied with the black sea coast for the hottest place in europe yesterday. feels even hotter today. uploaded tuesday's map (hallevik.jpg) to the usual place (see discussion)
Orienteering (terrain run) 1:08:00 [2] *** 8.5 km (8:00 / km)
ahr:151. back out to the flemingsberg map for an easy terrain run with loose map contact. I'm pretty tired from the last few days, but it felt good to run in the forest. running in dry-ish marshes is so nice...very easy on the joints. training weeks will be getting easier from now until august.

Boris and I are leaving tomorrow to go to Hungary and "coach" the JWOC team. I always like to say that in quotes, but actually I think we'll make very good coaches. in the end however, performance will mostly depend on how well these guys have prepared themselves already. I never really had any great races at the JWOCs I went to.

Wednesday Jul 4

Note
took the packed overnight train back to Stockholm (midnight->6am). That really sucked, and we only had regular seats. To make it worse they were the kind that face each other, i.e. no legroom.
Running (warmup) 7:00 [2] 0.78 mi (8:59 / mi)
yep
Orienteering race (race) 1:02:44 [4] *** 6.6 km (9:30 / km)
Ran an open course at an evening meet in Nacka. I was pretty tired, and did rather badly. Moving kind of slowly and in the wrong direction more often than I would like. Boris was ~3 minutes faster today. He suggested we re-run the course later in the summer. That sounds like a good idea. We met Cheri Mahoney (CAN) while waiting for the bus home. Shes in town for work and vacation before WOC. Ahr: 169.

Tuesday Jul 3

Note
birgittas club was putting on an evening meet today. During the day we sort of helped to send about 300 kids from a summer camp around an easy sprint-type course. My most useful job was collecting SI-bricks for reuse. This mostly involved sitting around in the sun for a long time.
Running (warmup) 10:00 [2] 1.25 mi (7:59 / mi)
Orienteering race (race) 49:15 [4] *** 8 km (6:09 / km)
In the evening I ran the M21 course which zigzagged all across this small piece of parkland. A few legs were across open grass, and the rest were in really open forest, except for one difficult area. There were barbed wire fences all over the place that we had to cross, though sometimes there were gates we could go through. I had some errors (a few minutes) of the stupid kind. The course itself was really fast, there were two Swedish dudes (national development team) who ran it in 38 and 39 minutes. I need more practice map-reading when running that fast. It seems that park-o is a really good way to train for that. Ahr:174

Monday Jul 2

Orienteering 1:02:50 [4] *** 8.25 km (7:37 / km)
running a course on some map we were just canoeing on. terrain not so difficult here, lots of stone walls everywhere. ahr:172
