| warmup to elliot ahr:147 | ||
| Running (fartlek) 19:24 [4] 3.28 mi (5:54 / mi) | ||

| Running 18:40 [3] 2.75 mi (6:47 / mi) | ||
| 4-5 mins between intervals and cooldown. | ||
| Note | ||
| the mayor's cup organizers took a ton of photos during the race on sunday. here is a pretty good one of me passing three dudes at the finish. someitmes I look a lot more tired at the end, but I think I've gotten used to saving [mental] energy in orienteering races, so I don't push as hard as I probably could through the middle of the course.
oh right...I was working on that take-home midterm for tomorrow. sucksville.
Tuesday Oct 30 | ||
| Running 57:56 [3] 8.23 mi (7:01 / mi) | ||
| feeling kindof tired today. ahr:158 | ||
Monday Oct 29 | ||
| Running 34:18 [3] 5.0 mi (6:51 / mi) | ||
| (rhr:44) I think I might start running earlier in the day now that its dark in the afternoon. ahr:160 | ||
Sunday Oct 28 | ||
| Running 21:00 [2] 2.7 mi (7:46 / mi) | ||
| warmup/cooldown around franklin park with matthias | ||
| Running race (xc race) 27:55 [5] 4.94 mi (5:39 / mi) vdot: 59.7 | ||
| the mayor's cup at franklin park. bastards made me join USATF for an extra $20 (matthias managed to get out of it though). been a long time since I raced on this course, almost 2 years now. very dusty during the race(hard to see/breathe sometimes), I'll be coughing up dirt for the next few days. not a bad performance considering all the running yesterday and that I haven't really been training for cross-country; 18 seconds off my PR here from back in the day. still not in the top half though, the field was mostly hardcore dudes (winner 23:29).
mile splits at 515, 552, 545, 551, 512 (the last is a little short). this stuff is hard on the knees, I think I'll stick to racing in the forest! ahr:180
Saturday Oct 27 | ||
| Orienteering 21:22 [4] *** 3.3 km (6:28 / km) | ||
| (rhr: 44) control picking at pawtuckaway. 2.5k+100m. feeling fine today, one tiny mistake. forest more open than in september. thanks to abi and matthias for planning exercises today! ahr:174 | ||
| Orienteering (no compass) 19:22 [4] *** 3.3 km (5:52 / km) | ||
| same course backwards without a compass (had one in my pocket..after all this is pawtuckaway). makes you look for features not only to check your position, but also to orient the map. drifted wide once. ahr: 177 | ||
| Running 16:00 [2] 2.13 mi (7:30 / mi) | ||
| back and forth between the cars and the courses.. | ||
| Orienteering 38:27 [3] *** 5.4 km (7:07 / km) | ||
| 4.3k+140m, a short attackpoint exercise on the big island. running right after eating lunch...not a good idea. stomach bothering me almost immediately, probably would have been better if I just barfed and got it over with. ahr:168 | ||
Friday Oct 26 | ||
| Running 28:45 [3] 4.25 mi (6:45 / mi) | ||
| (rhr:45) windy and cool today. feels like I'm mostly healthy again today. legs springy but tight after 3 days off. ahr:163 | ||
Wednesday Oct 24 | ||
| Note | ||
| rhr: 49-54 | ||
Tuesday Oct 23 | ||
| Note | ||
| feels like I'm fighting off an infection today(and last night)--no doubt something I picked up from you guys this weekend. scrapped the 8mi run for some aspirin and a nap. unfortunately I also have more work than usual this week. | ||
Monday Oct 22 | ||
| Running 29:53 [2] 4.25 mi (7:01 / mi) | ||
| warm, light rain. ahr:149 | ||
Sunday Oct 21 | ||
| Running (warmup) 8:00 [3] 1.0 mi (7:59 / mi) | ||
| Orienteering race (race) 53:06 [4] *** 9.4 km (5:39 / km) | ||
| rochester day2. no problems near the circle today, but some difficulty with trails/junctions in the middle of legs 5,6. running faster but also sloppier recently-- no more of this please. a minute behind matthias today, but almost 2 ahead of duca, so still took the big win overall. thats my first (and hopefully not the last) 2-day M21 A-meet victory ever. ahr:175 | ||
| Orienteering (terrain run) 33:00 [3] *** 4.71 km (7:00 / km) | ||
| ran down to the map exchange to cheer for boris, then back out on the map for some bonus running and cooldown. | ||
Blue Day 1 - Splits | ||
Blue Day 2 - Splits | ||
Saturday Oct 20 | ||
| Event: ROC A-Meet | ||
| Running (warmup/cooldown) 20:00 [3] 2.5 mi (7:59 / mi) | ||
| Orienteering race (race) 1:38:09 [4] *** 17.1 km (5:44 / km) | ||
| rochester a-meet blue1. dumb parallel error at #1 cost me big-time, though luckily the course was long and I had plenty of time to make that up by spiking all the rest. stupid stupid stupid. won the day by a few seconds over nick duca. ahr:176 | ||
| Note | ||
| now following matthias' example of recording length+10*climb for forest training. seems like a more accurate estimate of the effort [or additional distance around] involved. though I read somewhere that for men the climb:distance equivalent is more like 1:8, and 1:10 for women. and this way I don't get shafted on the mileage if I happen to do a lot of orienteering some week. | ||
Thursday Oct 18 | ||
| Running 9:30 [2] 1.3 mi (7:17 / mi) | ||
| x-training day | ||
| X-Training (elliptical) 40:00 [2] | ||
| biggins was there lifting monkeys. boring as usual ZZzzzz.... ahr:129 | ||
Wednesday Oct 17 | ||
| Running 42:00 [2] 6.2 mi (6:47 / mi) | ||
| to/from pine hill for the terrain loop. no other takers today. | ||
| Running (terrain intervals) 18:05 [5] 3.9 km (4:38 / km) | ||
| 6x~650m. almost getting too dark to do at this time. its been 3 weeks since I was last on the loop, it looks a little different with the leaves starting to fall. equal rest.
(loop-time, end-hr, recovery-hr) 3:15, 168, 113 3:06, 178, 114 3:03, 177, 116 2:59, 178, 119 2:49, 178, 121 2:49, 179, 116 knees taking some abuse at this pace, maybe next time I'll do double-loops instead.
| Note | ||
| spike asked for more info about the wild beasts of the blue hills. I just did some web-stalking and found a list of state mammals. I see that there are moose in massachusetts (wasn't sure about that). BH is certainly large enough for a few to hide in. I also saw a lot of deer on sunday, but they all ran away quietly. so my guess is that it was one or more moose that was moo-ing madly | ||
| Note | ||
| from daddy-o: "My reference says moose mate in September and October. The cows lure the bulls with 'grunting and mooing love calls'".
| ||
Tuesday Oct 16 | ||
| Running 57:11 [3] 8.23 mi (6:56 / mi) | ||
| (rhr:43) up to north beacon st and back. ahr:156 | ||
| Note | ||
| I was just leaving a 2nd floor meeting in some campus building(14) this morning when firemen in biohazard suits came in to collect a delivery from anthrax.com that someone had apparently opened on the 3rd floor. how nice. | ||
Monday Oct 15 | ||
| Orienteering (terrain run) 38:45 [2] *** 5.54 km (7:00 / km) | ||
| a short run at prospect hill park after having 3 hours worth of job interviews at some company nearby (I guess that went well; there was this ukranian guy who asked me the hardest questions..) no sign of mad-forest-cows today. ahr:150 | ||
Sunday Oct 14 | ||
| Running 29:15 [2] 3.9 mi (7:30 / mi) | ||
| round trip quincy adams T to blue hills. | ||
| Orienteering (terrain run) 1:36:25 [3] *** 12.05 km (8:00 / km) | ||
| running through blue hills under a constant misty drizzle. mostly easy except for 5mins race-pace while being chased through the northern section of BH east for nearly a km by some angry/hungry/horny animal making loud moo-ing sounds. never saw it though, and I suppose it could have been a bunch of them just standing around moo-ing. didn't hang around to find out. escaped by crossing the road near the reservoir. anyone know what kind of wild beasts live around there? somewhat apprehensive about running into thickly forested areas for the remainder of the run. made it over to the close section of BH-west for a little while before heading back.
ahr:157 | ||
| Note | ||
| working on an interesting addition to attackpoint this weekend. you see it soon... | ||
Saturday Oct 13 | ||
| Running 35:55 [3] 5.01 mi (7:09 / mi) | ||
| fartlek on the river ahr:159 including fast stuff | ||
| Running (fast parts) 18:35 [4] 3.19 mi (5:49 / mi) | ||
| 4x5mins (last one only 3.5mins since I ran out of road) with 5 mins regular pace in between. distance here is guessed based on measured last interval. | ||
Friday Oct 12 | ||
| Running 29:18 [3] 4.25 mi (6:53 / mi) | ||
| finally feeling some spring back in my strides after the highlander. I'm curious to know how the event on my island map went today. ahr:155 | ||
Thursday Oct 11 | ||
| Running 10:00 [2] 1.36 mi (7:20 / mi) | ||
| to/from mit gym. some fast strides on the grass on the way home. | ||
| X-Training (elliptical thing) 40:00 [2] | ||
| 5.3 "miles" seemed especially boring today. saw biggins there about to get huge[r] when I was leaving. ahr:145 | ||
Wednesday Oct 10 | ||
| Running 1:03:07 [2] 8.23 mi (7:40 / mi) | ||
| up the river. caught up to boris and misha just as they stopped to stretch.
ahr:150 squeezing a few more thorns out of my knees today. I thought I got most of them yesterday.
Tuesday Oct 9 | ||
| Running 17:00 [2] 2.1 mi (8:06 / mi) | ||
| to/from boojum with misha and eric bone. | ||
| Orienteering 41:10 [3] *** 4.12 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| running around boojum rock trying to get lost. ahr:159 | ||
Monday Oct 8 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rhr:58-65!) had thought about doing some really easy cross training today, but instead I've mostly sat around amusing myself with my soreness. legs aren't so bad, but my upper arms are essentially useless. I knew I used to do strength training for some reason. (this doesn't mean I'll start again now) | ||
| Running (foolish) 35:12 [2] 4.35 mi (8:06 / mi) | ||
| a very slow run on the river. feeling a little looser (no, not "like a loser") afterwards. ahr:145 | ||
Sunday Oct 7 | ||
| Event: Hudson Highlander VII | ||
| Running 3:00 [2] 0.4 mi (7:30 / mi) | ||
| just enough jogging (on the way to the start) that my legs aren't totally stiff | ||
| Orienteering race (race) 3:34:56 [4] *** 30 km (7:10 / km) | ||
| the highlander, 26.2k. (just put in a wild guess as to the actual distance traveled) felt good most of the way, not much time lost anywhere. with misha a lot of the race. a little bit of stomach cramping from all the gu(5) and hamstring cramps on the last loop. 90s ahead of eric for the big win.

- Splits | ||
Saturday Oct 6 | ||
| Note | ||
| I spent some time yesterday drawing in my notes from thompson island (boston harbor). the map isn't done yet but here is a sneak preview. its not that big of an island (north lines 250m apart) but certainly enough for a sprint race. they are going to use it for Outward Bound Professional programs on the island; next friday the boston consulting group is doing a score-o event here. I think the map will be really good considering I was only there for a day.
today I'm just sitting around getting psyched for the highlander tomorrow--its such a cool race. I think the winning time could be over 4 hours this year. a good forecast: 46-53 degrees and sunny during the race hours. leaving this afternoon with jeff and misha.
Friday Oct 5 | ||
| Running 18:22 [3] 2.7 mi (6:48 / mi) | ||

Thursday Oct 4 | ||
| Running 31:28 [2] 4.35 mi (7:14 / mi) | ||

ahr:143 | ||
Wednesday Oct 3 | ||

| 8 hours mapping today. I think I'll skip the run | ||
Tuesday Oct 2 | ||
| Running 25:22 [2] 3.53 mi (7:11 / mi) | ||
