Saturday Aug 31

Running (forest) 27:10 [2] 3.02 mi (8:59 / mi)
running around some super-nice area that I think I will map.
Strength 5:00 [1]

Wednesday Aug 28

Bike 3:00 [2]
Running (terrain) 32:00 [3] 3.5 mi (9:08 / mi)
at prospect hill. the woods are open enough to run in shorts without getting scratched up. wow this is pretty convenient, I could do terrain runs on my lunchbreak. already not much use for technique-training since I know the map so well, but it's still great to be able to do all my running in the forest.

Tuesday Aug 27

Bike 15:00 [2]
Strength 20:00 [1]

Monday Aug 26

Running (terrain) 23:30 [3]
I scored a trial week at some little gym on the prospect hill map. (and 2 minutes from my office) it's slightly ghetto, but it also costs half as much as BSC. really I just need a place to shower after running in the forest. so far so good in the back department.
Strength (crunches) 5:00 [1]

Sunday Aug 25

Strength (basic) 30:00 [1]
I have one of those big swiss-balls at home now. in other news, I'm somewhat sore from my "running" workout yesterday. the back doesn't really hurt though.
Note
I'm using the swissball for a desk chair at home. its a gentle but constant balance-workout for my stomach and back which will hopefully help recovery. but I don't expect to be recording web-surfing in my training log;)

Saturday Aug 24

Orienteering (map simplification) 15:00 [2] ***
spiked:4/5c
neoc training at breakheart. ran with a hand-drawn map of the important features.
Orienteering (memory-o) 10:00 [3] ***
spiked:5/5c
I figured it would be pretty dumb to come here and never actually run with the map, so I did it norwegian style and took a blank one along.
Orienteering 21:00 [3] ***
just some more running in the terrain with dan.

Thursday Aug 22

Bike 10:00 [2]
ahr:120
Strength 20:00 [1]
my back felt good most of the day, and then started hurting a little bit in the evening
Note
well done matthias!

Wednesday Aug 21

Note
CSU Classic champs are today. It would have been fun to go, it's the same area as jwoc '99. who will (or already is by now....) be the classic king? william and matthias both have it in them.

also something interesting if you are norwegian (or not) is over a hundred exercises published by the NOF.
Running (terrain) 22:00 [3] 2.5 mi (8:47 / mi)
running at prospect hill. seemed ok; I've started using ice after workouts again, hopefully that will help recovery.
Strength (crunches) 5:00 [1]

ahr:145 slept:6.0
Strength (carrying stuff) 45:00 [1]
moving lots of shite into my new apartment. yeah I know, real good for the back. spread out over about 4 hours.

Wednesday Aug 14

X-Training 20:00 [3]
ahr:156
[it seems like I never write anything when I'm not happy with my training]
I wanted to try a workout first thing in the morning. I had to get up a bit earlier, and I was a bit sluggish. I will try to still do cross training sessions in the morning when I start running again. usually I make the mistake of stopping that once I'm ok to run again, and I don't get as much training as I could.
Note
I volunteered to help at a NEOC training session in 2 weeks. I'm not sure exactly what I will do, but I sometimes have a hard time suggesting improvements to people who don't really know what they're doing. (it would be something like "obviously you're here if you look at the map...") this probably means either
1) I don't actually know what I'm doing (but it seems to work)
2) I learned how to orienteer by accident, or
3) it was too long ago and I forgot what people [if anyone] told me when I was learning.

maybe the biggest difference is just perception of the map. think about what a beginner sees when they look at it (probably just a bunch of lines and stuff) and what you see. I know I don't even think about the "lines and stuff" and there isn't much I can tell them to suddenly make it easier.

in any case it seemed like a good excuse to get back in the woods.

Saturday Aug 3

Bike 15:00 [2]

Strength 26:00 [1]
also tried a new back-stretching machine.

Friday Aug 2

Running 53:49 [3] 6.75 mi (7:57 / mi)
ahr:157
on the river after a thunderstorm made it nice and cool. my HR has been pretty high on the last few runs even though I wasn't pushing that hard. I decided to run slower today to keep it down around 160 (thats my usual training hr)

Thursday Aug 1

X-Training (elliptical) 15:00 [2]
ahr:150
moving up to the x-trainer. felt fine. my back hurt yesterday, but maybe that was from squirming in the dentist chair.
Strength 25:00 [1]
