12 PM

Cycle commute 43:00 [3] 10.6 mi (4:03 / mi)

lunchtime cycle. Was going to go running after, but ended up working until 10 due to some totally incompetent advisors. I should really have gone for a cycle after, as I was so pissed off I would have got some pretty good Strava pbs.

Off-road running 39:39 [3] 3.9 mi (10:10 / mi)

We unexpectedly found ourselves with a 2 hour kid-free window. We have to take the opportunity to go running together, declares Ray. Do we...really? I think, while smiling and agreeing. Where to, I ask. Arthur's Seat, Ray declares.

We jog there, my body barely moving, and Ray tells me he doesn't want a hilly run. Then why are we at Arthur's seat I think to myself. I remembered a mile in that my hip flexor was flaring up yesterday. Ouch. Getting sore. Then I do an Oleg and inexplicably manage to fall in such a way that I find myself rolling around in the biggest muddiest puddle around. Then Ray tells me he wants to do laps of the XC field (how tedious). After getting to bed v late v much the worse for wear, and getting up at 7 to take Laurence to swimming, my tolerance for running was wearing thin. I then spied Jet jogging in the direction of my house and announced that it was probably best that I let him do laps by himself, and had a nice catch up with Jet on my way home.

Bad hip flexor is not good news.

Road running 9:00 [3] 1.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Still dithering about whether to run the national. Perfect pre race prep of watching Lucy play football on the meadows for an hour in horizontal rain. This jog was to see if I could breathe and run at the same time, and to warm me up.

9 min miling felt ok.
1 PM

Road running 49:36 [3] 6.3 mi (7:52 / mi)

National XC. 3 laps. 10k

Decided I would run 8min miling for the first two laps as I thought that's the pace I could breathe at then see how I felt. I felt ok and pushed on...to another 8min miling lap. People were dying all over the place though, and I cruised past stacks of people on the last lap. Nice.

Sore hip flexor though. 103rd - shite!

Note

Still got a cold. It doesn't seem to be getting any better. Hmm. Jog around the national at the back and be able to show my face at the trotter dinner, but have a crap race and possibly feel iller in the evening for it; OR stay in bed and face the slagging at the trotter dinner for not running? The dilemma of being in such a childish running club. Oh to be a member of Carnethy, when a resting heart rate a smidge too far to the right when plotted on a standard deviation bell curve means a weekend on the sofa reading articles about improbable running challenges called 'rounds' with kale smoothies to hand.

On the subject of kale smoothies, my work colleague who does quite a bit of running and is a nutribullet devotee was struggling with what to eat after running. Chocolate milk, number 1 post exercise nutritional solution, I tell him. Hmm, not very healthy though he thinks. He proudly showed me what he had done with his nutribullet today. A smoothie of kale and chocolate milk. I kid you not. WTF!

Note

Training will resume when I get my life back. Too much work, coupled with a cough.

Orienteering - race 34:00 [3] 5.0 mi (6:48 / mi)

Armagh urban

It was more fun than most urbans. Big mistake on number 5 (i think it was 5) and a truly mahoosive one at 15, then jogged in after that.

Orienteering - race 20:57 [3] 2.6 mi (8:03 / mi)

Armagh sprint heat

This was fun - very slippy for the first half, and I got tired in the second half through lack of fitness, but fun. 11 was a miss, and I had a 10secs wtf moment on the way to 4. Great to do my first sprint race in ages, but it felt quite clunky.
3 PM

Orienteering - race 19:19 [3] 2.6 mi (7:26 / mi)

Armagh final

Was going ok and passed the two bekkelagets girls who started in front of me. Then one of them gradually reeled me in and she overtook me to 9 when I took a shit route cause I couldn't understand the map. I was distracted, and missed out 10 even though the route 9-11 passed quite close by. I ought to have wondered why she went such an odd way to 11 and twigged that there was an extra control but didn't. My fault. She overtook me again at the end. She wan't running that quickly though, and I think I would have run much better without her. I always hate seeing other people on a course. The fast girls were much too quick for me today. Decrepitude looms...

Laurence was epic on the m16- course today. V proud.

Road running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Slight jogging

Off-road running 38:10 [3] 4.4 mi (8:40 / mi)

A circumnavigation of (Royal) Portrush Golf Course, the first half of which was on the incredible beach there which I got to myself. Bathed in the first sunshine of the trip, this run was brilliant.

5 PM

Road running 32:48 [3] 3.5 mi (9:22 / mi)

Yesterday no running. Real blow-the-skin-off-your-face weather here in n Ireland, and a tiring day at the ulster folk museum. Fun, but tiring.

Today up to portrush and the giants causeway. I looked after the kids while Fran went running the we swapped. Around Portrush, then caught in the sand dunes near the golf course, and then back by the beach. Knees not happy. Sapping days, but fun. It's the first time today that the kids have been interested in geology. It's not surprising - the giants causeway never ceases to stun me.

Road running 35:30 [3] 4.33 mi (8:12 / mi)

We had been at w5 science museum at Belfast, and I went for a jaunt around the docks while Fran single-parented, then we swapsied.

Sunday Feb 12, 2017 #

Note

I had to leave to head to N Ireland at 7:30, which was too early for morning running. Then when we got to Sandend, the wind was about 50mph, so I didn't go out for fear of the skin on my face blowing off.

XC / road / hill race 1:13:30 [3] 5.8 mi (12:40 / mi)

Carnethy 5

the weather was truly horrific. 40 mph wind and blizzard conditions. For most of the race it was that small hail-like snow for the first 3/4ters which when it was in your face coming down to the howe was exceptionally painful; then bigger snowflakes, which was less sore, but filled your eyes with melting snow which was also quite tough. Nearly didn't get to South Black Hill as it was so hard to stay on your feet.

I paid the price for not setting off hard, and we actually walked some of the initial path after the gate due to congestion. It thinned out a lot after Scald Law (which people were just sauntering up, so I wasted a lot of energy getting past them in the heather. I nearly yelled at them that it was supposed to be a race!). Anyway, very glad to have survived such horrific conditions.

Trail running 49:31 [3] 4.8 mi (10:19 / mi)

Arthurs seat with James. Not much running this week. I am off next week which means getting stuff out at work. This was a lovely little trot though.

Road running 50:37 [3] 6.23 mi (8:07 / mi)

Work are setting up a running club. This was the first outing. It was from the road runners manual of not-very-interesting-but-getting-the-job-done routes. 3 miles straight line to longsight, right, right again to the western approach road, and back. Dull route but fun to run with others, and good to get out in the rain.

Cycle commute 43:50 [3] 10.57 mi (4:09 / mi)

Lunchtime bike ride. Very useful for mulling over work stuff I need to get on with this afternoon. Down to Newhaven and back on the disused railway. Very nice.
7 PM

Intervals - long endurance 55:55 [3] 6.53 mi (8:34 / mi)

MPC. 3 x 9 mins in the vilest of weather. Job done!

Trail running 1:27:37 [3] 10.45 mi (8:23 / mi)

An early morning run to Ratho with Lucy cycling beside. Some rather frustrating faffage at the start (mummy I am too cold / too hot / want gloves / don't wdnt the gloves / don't like that dog / scared of the cobbles / don't like cycling under that bridge / how far is it) and faffage in the middle due to the viaduct being shut for renovations. Once we got back on the canal she settled down, so I could get into a pace and the miles clicked by nicely. I rather enjoyed running distance on the flat firm surface and I might be tempted to train for a marathon if my body wasn't totally wrecked now. I felt like I was running biomechanically worse than Rob Lee does, and that might be problematic when it comes to the three half marathons that I have entered later in the year. It's a bit of a limping shuffle.

Spent the rest of the day at EICA Ratho, which was quite tricky with my crap Raynaulds hands.

Trail running 1:02:24 [3] 6.4 mi (9:45 / mi)

Lovely run with Graeme. I've been a bit too overworked / ill for running this week. Back into it soon.

Still can't decide between w40 and W21E at the JK. Hmmm.

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:06:42 [3] 14.4 mi (4:38 / mi)

Plantar fasciitis, slight flare up, so it was time to get on my bike.

The long way to work. Via Musselburgh, Leith, Pilton, etc. Fun. I was going for it, not least cause I have a lot on at work.
2 PM

Trail running 21:47 [3] 2.6 mi (8:23 / mi)

I needed to get some fresh air so I had a bit of a jog. Via the garage, meadows and the first 5 controls of Ray's big weekend course.

Trail running 53:35 [3] 5.8 mi (9:14 / mi)

trotettes. Megan and I were hosting, so I took them on a jaunt down to craigmillar and around the scottish student xc course. It was quite muddy for my trainers. Warm night.

I wanted to get out earlier too for lunchtime running but was trapped under mountains of stuff at work. :-(

Plantar fasciitis is getting worse again :-((
