Road running 1:17:06 [3] 8.57 mi (9:00 / mi)

Buggy run. Ran up to the innocent railway then down it, and to Duddingston carpark. There I realised that the low road was properly closed due to unstable rocks, not just Sunday closed to cars. It was either lug the buggy up the steps again or run a different route, so I turned around bank the way I came then a lap of queens drive and home.

Not sure I’d call this a run necessarily as I was out of the house for at least 90 mins but was running for much less than that. Bumped into Elspeth, then one of my old neighbours, then Amelia and Hazel and families, then jamjar and Niamh. Great to catch up with all of them!

Still not feeling sprightly at all.

Orienteering - race 20:58 [3] 3.0 mi (6:59 / mi)

Every other weekend we have a bubble family which is great fun. Megan is keen to get her kids orienteering so after Ray took Thursday night running training to Liberton GC we did Dreghorn light green today followed by a few hours outdoor playing after. Put some effort in as Freya and Loz are quick. They did 27-ish so well clear - phew! Ray went round after a few secs slower than me, so a MoW squad win for me. I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.

Orienteering - race 27:05 [3] 3.1 mi (8:44 / mi)

Winterlope at Liberton GC

My legs felt absolutely shocking. Just jelly crap. But apart from that it was fun running around what must be quite a scenic golf course, on a moonlit night in perfect weather for it. Fun.

My phone is still playing up so I borrowed Ray’s watch to do the map run thing. It’s hard at GCs to know you are at the control otherwise. One bunker looks very much like all others. Ray’s Garmin was exciting as the vibrate still works - mine broke ages ago - so it was easy to tell when you were at a control, even when you perhaps didn’t find the feature...

Road running 30:00 [3] 3.2 mi (9:22 / mi)

Jog there and back. It’s was a stagger home with my knackered legs.

Note

Excellent to see Scottish Orienteering have drafted an orienteering calendar for this year. Really good idea to have a kids SOL. Great to have some hope, and who doesn’t love a trip to Craig A’Barnes (Scottish camps, June). Best get training in the hope that the events go ahead.

Road running 51:31 [3] 6.21 mi (8:18 / mi)

Run with WHB. I was surprisingly struggling. I think he has been training for a change in his army job. I felt v unfit but the chat was good.

Note

Was going to run the Craigmillar FWTN but went for a walk with some friends in the afternoon to the play park there, and we decided it was rough enough to feel uneasy being there mid afternoon, so I sure as heck didn’t want to go back by myself in the dark that night to run a night o.

I think I’ll introduce a “Trainspotting” rule. If the area has / could be used as a location for Trainspotting, then perhaps I’ll opt out if orienteering there.

And even funnier, I found out after I had chickened out that a friend started the course and then wimped when they got abuse from kids hiding in the forest.

Trail running 53:55 [3] 5.82 mi (9:16 / mi)

Nice sunny afternoon. Out with the cumbersome running buggy. Up through Pollock, down the innocent railway (saw some runners shin the wall to get in Duddingston Loch nature reserve. Quite jealous - it looks interesting over there). Then up MFD. Had to do the steps in the end as the slope was too muddy. It was some haul! One of us was finding the steps very funny. It was not me. Then otter-spotting (not there) down Queens Drive and home. I could do with getting some sleep sometime. Didn’t get much last night due to B and a really sore back. I can’t see it being less sore tonight!

Road running 1:15:07 [3] 8.39 mi (8:57 / mi)

Had Lucy and Bertie and wanted to go running so a buggy run with Lucy beside. Down to Portobello, bribing Lucy with an ice cream. Lovely sunny day, made for a springtime SOL.

Note

Did a walk / jog with Lucy (running) and the buggy to friends at Braids Farm Road. 5 miles probably. Dropping off some peanut butter brownies. Hit a v muddy path in the hermitage which was fun. Good to leave the house for the first time in days. Work stress has been unbearable of late.

Trail running 59:39 [3] 6.71 mi (8:53 / mi)

After making rude hand gestures to Nicola from the comfort of our sitting room Laurence and I headed out to take out our frustrations in a more constructive manner. He was on his bike while I ran pushing B. This is the only way I can get out just now - by taking B with me. The running buggy is v tiring. He starts nursery in 2 weeks which is v sad but will help us manage the current totally unmanageable childcare / work / home schooling of miserable kids situation. You can totally tell Nicola is not a parent. She has no idea.

I am so tired. I am quite disilliusioned with work for many reasons too.

So an outing was much required, and we headed through the Hermitage to Fran's, then on through the Royal Hospital grounds to the links, down and through the meadows and home. Much better.

Off-road running 1:08:00 [3] 6.9 mi (9:51 / mi)

Zigzagging through Prestonfield GC in the snow. Quite hard work, esp as it must be a fairly marshy course when not covered in snow.

Friday Feb 12, 2021 #

Note

More xc skiing in the afternoon. Craigmillar GC skiing has been superb, and what a week to have as a half term!
8 AM

Off-road running 50:00 [3] 4.5 mi (11:07 / mi)

Jaunt with WHB in the snow on Prestonfield and Arthurs seat. He was in trainers and I was in icebugs. He spent a lot of time on his arse. Fun though.

Thursday Feb 11, 2021 #

Note

Sledging and xc skiing for hours at Craigmillar GC. Excellent xc skiing. Ray’s boots are held together with duct tape, which is not bad news for me as he can babysit while I ski.

Orienteering - race 39:06 [3] 3.2 mi (12:13 / mi)

Craigmillar GC winterlope. V wintry. Fun, if tough in the deep snow. Good to get the course done early as then I get fresh snow instead of following tracks, and I get to xc ski it tomorrow. Missed the small paths through the gorse in the snow so wasted time in the Blackford bit.

Off-road running 20:00 [3] 1.6 mi (12:30 / mi)

There and back

Tuesday Feb 9, 2021 #

2 PM

Cross training 40:00 [3]

A bit of XC skiing around Prestonfield GC with Loz. Great fun. Then back out with Lucy skiing and me pushing B in the buggy through the snow.

Road running 31:00 [3] 3.8 mi (8:09 / mi)

If you are bored of hearing about how tired I am look away now. God I am so bloody exhausted.

Took the kids out for a walk this morning. The kids were inadequately dressed (Are you sure you'll be warm enough? Yes of course, I'll be fine!) and so nicked my gloves and a jersey. Got so cold we all headed home where I collapsed in an exhausted heap. I get so tired when I get cold.

Scraped enough energy together to drag Loz out for a run. Threw in a few efforts for some fun but I was so tired I was struggling.

Off-road running 1:24:50 [3] 5.7 mi (14:53 / mi)

3 more x MFD. fastest was 9:14 which is lame. Must do better. R hip flexor still not happy though.

Saturday Feb 6, 2021 #

Off-road running 59:08 [3] 7.5 km (7:53 / km)

2 x MFD for HBT. Felt shocking, but got it done

Orienteering - race 34:55 [3] 4.5 mi (7:46 / mi)

FWTN Alnwickhill

My phone is off getting fixed so no MapRun. Then I stopped to tie my lace going to 5 stopped my watch and only realised going to 10. Restarted my watch but gave up a bit as I thought my time wouldn’t record and I was wasting my time, but garmin gives you an elapsed time.

I think I am more tired than I have ever been before. Just no down time. L & L are so despondent that I am in full time cheer up mode. It’s exhausting. And basically single parenting as when I am not working Ray is. And not getting a full nights sleep doesn’t help. Moan moan moan.

Fun evening out. Marshy underfoot. Good compass practice as there is not much to go on at night.
