7 AM

Off-road running 1:54:48 [3] 11.37 mi (10:06 / mi)

8 AM

Off-road running 1:02:00 [3] 5.7 mi (10:53 / mi)

dropped the kids off at school then to Arthur’s Seat. Set off up the gutted Haddie thinking I’d reccy the handicap before Monday, but the most was so thick it was a bit futile. Got to the top of the seat, then nether hill, then crow hill was in the mist. Guessed which direction to head to dunsapie Hill, up whinny and by then I was bored of the mist so found the easy path to they dry dam and down to haggis Knowe. Back via the crags and the paint shop.

In a bit of an odd mood over the past few days. Not sure I know what I am training for any more.

Road running 16:00 [3] 1.8 mi (8:53 / mi)

Warm up and down
1 PM

Intervals - short and speedy 29:30 [3] 3.8 mi (7:46 / mi)

20 x 1 min on 30 secs off around the meadows, on a very hot day. Sweaty. There was a slight breeze though, and quite a bit of shade under the trees.

Wednesday Jun 27, 2018 #

12 PM

Trail running 45:54 [3] 5.93 mi (7:44 / mi)

Southern Craiglockhart from work, along the canal to Craiglockhart on the way out, back via Myreside and HP to the canal. Hot! Nearly got hit by a golf ball on the top of the hill. Happy doing 7:10-ish min/miling on the canal which was good.
5 PM

Trail running 39:25 [3] 4.41 mi (8:56 / mi)

The good thing about being a BlackRocker is that they have lots of nutty things they do to keep their employees happy. Please come along and watch the Germany South Korea match in work time while we ply you with ice cold soft drinks and nibbles (beer tomorrow though I can’t make it, and Friday afternoon off at 3 cause it is sunny and I don’t work Fridays. You win some...). So 2 Irn Brus and a very exciting last 10 mins of the match was perfect prep for my run. Caffeine-tastic!

It was still hot hot hot though, as I slogged it over the meadows, down Castro and up the crags home.

Priestfield, up the Innocent Railway, up to the col, down the nice side of the bog and back via the crags.
6 PM

Trail running 36:29 [3] 4.03 mi (9:03 / mi)

Crags, back via Castro then past Nelson Hall to coop. Boiling. Brown crop top dusted off for the first time in over 10 years.

7 AM

Trail running 1:46:41 [3] 11.33 mi (9:25 / mi)

Pulled myself out of wallowing in misery with an early run with Megan Wright and Rhona Anderson. Such a lovely morning, some really nice friends to run with, life felt much better. Down to meet them on Ferry Road, then cycle paths to Leith walk, to Arthur’s Seat, around a bit then up to the top, down the dry dam and Home via the crags.

Saturday Jun 23, 2018 #

Note

Firmly wedged in :-( at missing the Lairig Ghru, and hating myself for deciding not to do it and hating myself for knowing that it was the right decision to make, and hating myself for forcing myself to make he right decision, and general hateful frustrating gah-ness and misery. Next time I’ll just say fuckit and accept the inevitable year of Achilles pain. It’s much more tolerable. It’s amazing how, when you know :-(ness well, you can slip back into it so easily. It feels so familiar, almost comforting.

Trail running 53:34 [3] 5.36 mi (10:00 / mi)

Dropped the kids at school, then crags, up the dry dam to the top and home via duddingston and the innocent railway. Nice.

Thursday Jun 21, 2018 #

6 AM

Road running 27:51 [3] 3.6 mi (7:44 / mi)

Back on it with a morning run. Achilles was not sore, but I could feel it. I had decided to do the Lairig Ghru last night definitely, but now I am thinking I really really ought not. I don’t want to get injured. I am fit, things are going well, this race is a stepping stone, not the be all and end all. Blah blah blah. But I really want to do it. Gah! What to do? What to do? This is torture.
4 PM

Cross training 30:00 [3]

Work charity indoor cycling competition.

The problem with this was that there was no resistance on the bike whatsoever. It was not a cv exercise - my legs don’t move quick enough to get the pulse up - it wasn’t strength either. It just gave me cramp in my hamstrings. Not good at all!

Road running 15:52 [3] 1.9 mi (8:21 / mi)

Home via the paint ship

Note
(injured)

Achilles not good.

Orienteering - race 1:16:05 [3] 6.3 mi (12:05 / mi)

Jukola leg 4

Interlopers. Ray did well in his first night o for 13 years, then Max had a solid run with a silly mistake, Colin had a fun time in the forest with Laura Goy for company. I headed out in daylight. Dropped time at 1, 2, 3, before doing better to 4,5 and 6. Then stuffed 7. Grr. Probably 5/6 mins of mistakes already. Nailed 8 by going slowly, and was lost at 9 and was heading out to relocate when I bumped into it. Nice! 11 I was pleased with, and 12 I forced myself to stop and think which helped. Twisted my ankle on way to 14 pretty badly but was able to run on after a bit. Stuffed the second last one badly, biggest mistake here. Was distracted by Chloe Potter, and dropped 2 mins at least, She dropped even more though.

Got to bed but my Achilles was hurting so much, and it felt like plantar fasciitis too, that I couldn't sleep so got up. Hmm. Lairig Ghru or not Lairig Ghru??? I really don't want to get injured now. Too many fun plans.

Great fun weekend with friends. Good to see interlopers Venla and Jukola teams running well. Amazing atmosphere, Personally I need agility and adrenaline if I want to do better.

Orienteering - race 37:26 [3] 3.5 mi (10:42 / mi)

Venla. I picked up a run from the runners bank, 3rd leg with a team from a workplace in Helsinki. First leg said she would take 90 mins, and did about that, 2nd leg said 2 hours, and was pretty close to that. It was tricky to tell when they would get in, esp if you couldn't tell if they would be mistake prone (so could go clean from the last radio and mean I wouldn't be ready in the box on time) or slow (in which case I could warm up after they had been through the spectator). I was pleased to be able to recognise them when they came in though, and got my map ok.

Number 1 I was alright, but a wimp on the felled bit, and hesitated before the control. This was my biggest mistake in the splits, but I think at least 40 secs of this was the slow jog / walk my leg 2 did from punching the finish to the changeover as I was going ok. 2 fine 3 fine, 4 made a point of heading to the drinks point. 5 I was indecisive in the open and lost time by taking one route choice then another. The rest was fine but I was ambling a bit as my Achilles was hurting and I was really just out to check the terrain fro later. Always nice to get in a Scandinavian forest, and the terrain was amazing.

Note
(injured)

I think I have caught Peter’s dodgy knee. Hurts even when sitting down. Boo!
7 PM

Trail running 53:54 [3] 6.5 mi (8:18 / mi)

After a long day spent mainly at airports, a nice jog from the hotel with the interlopers dream team followed by the obligatory pizza and holiday beers. Gotta love Scandinavia.

I am running leg 4 in Jukola, but am happy to run Venla if anyone has a spare run. It’s either that or a training run in the forest tomorrow. Just pleased to be back in nice terrain.

4 PM

Intervals - short and speedy 1:03:07 [3] 8.03 mi (7:52 / mi)

10 x 3 mins on 1 min off along the canal then home. Not much time today. Rushing everywhere.

Monday Jun 11, 2018 #

Trail running 59:33 [3] 7.26 mi (8:12 / mi)

Canal for 2 miles to Craiglockhart West, then past Myreside back to the canal and home over the meadows. Going well, feeling good after a day feeling ill.

Sunday Jun 10, 2018 #

9 AM

Road running 1:51:36 [3] 13.7 mi (8:09 / mi)

Glasgow half training has started.

Portobello, Leith links, Leith Wall, through princes street gardens to the canal and up to Carroll Knowe where Laurence had a football match. Felt really nauseous for the first 4 miles before recovering.

Afternoon in bed feeling ill

Friday Jun 8, 2018 #

7 PM

Off-road running 1:30:19 [3] 9.53 mi (9:29 / mi)

Dropped Laurence and friends at Bonaly for a scout thing. I had 90mins before pick up. I did harbour hill and bells Hill, then the path on the north side of black hill. I wanted to do a circuit but was not sure I had time, so shifted to the Howe, and down the road, over the Cleuch back to Bonaly reservoir and back in time, just. Phew. Left Achilles sore, and right calf tight.

Bonaly on a sunny Friday night is an eye opener. I’ve never seen so many unlikely looking campers.

Thursday Jun 7, 2018 #

12 PM

Trail running 47:52 [3] 6.12 mi (7:49 / mi)

Meadow laps. So dull. 2 x anti-clockwise, then turned for 2 x the other direction, to stop it getting too boring. Quicker than I would have liked due to time pressures at work. Back still v ouchy.
5 PM

Road running 34:47 [3] 4.0 mi (8:42 / mi)

To Leonne’s in Morningside, pick up the kids then run home while they cycled. Tired out.

XC / road / hill race 32:52 [3] 5.0 mi (6:34 / mi)

CAAC 5 mile road race.

Not sure how this was going to go. I started hard, then stopped very abruptly indeed after about 100m in when I tweaked a nerve in my back, and was in so much pain I could barely breathe (if like me you are susceptible to this you will know what I mean). It subsided quite quickly though and I could breathe again so re-joined the race. Moved through to reach Chris Peggie, the kids coach at Corstorphine. Stuck with him until about 3 miles when my earlier effort started to take its toll and I slowed as he moved away. Jenny MacLean came by me just after a mile to go, but I hung in to Finish just behind her. A surprisingly hilly course. A bit meh to let Jenny pass me, but not a terrible run.

We had the kids to entertain, which somewhat stopped a warm up or warm down. I ran 5 miles today and not a step more. Maybe that’s why I twanged my back.

Tuesday Jun 5, 2018 #

1 PM

Trail running 47:17 [3] 5.7 mi (8:18 / mi)

Canal to craiglockhart East, then back via Myreside, HP and canal. Taking it easy for CAAC 5 tomorrow, but looking forward to doing some harder sessions again.

Monday Jun 4, 2018 #

5 PM

Tempo run 24:23 [3] 3.24 mi (7:32 / mi)

As much of a tempo as is wise the day after a fell race. Out along the canal to meggetland and back quicker.

Road running 14:22 [3] 1.8 mi (7:59 / mi)

Then home from work with my bag.

Sunday Jun 3, 2018 #

1 PM

XC / road / hill race 1:23:11 [3] 7.61 mi (10:56 / mi)

Yetholm hill race.

Felt dire today, until the race started and I settled into it. It is undulating and grassy, with 760m climb. The first three ladies were within 100m the whole race. I was 2nd at the top of the last descent, but ended 3rd. Training starts tomorrow for the Glasgow half, so I am hoping that my legs won’t be too sore.

Saturday Jun 2, 2018 #

Note

No training window today. It has been a really crap week for this sort of thing.

Friday Jun 1, 2018 #

Trail running 50:46 [3] 5.56 mi (9:08 / mi)

The only opportunity today was to go early. I can’t do early anymore - everything hurts so much and it is so damn slow. Preistfield Road, innocent Railway, crags and back via Castro.

Then to the Scottish schools orienteering with Laurence and his friend. Sadly laurence had a bad time with the dogs, as did some others. I think we’ll give orienteering a rest for a bit. Need to make sure we have some positive dxperiences, and the sort of area used today definately was not the sort of place to be positive in.
