Note

I did a ‘The Run In’ podcast recently. If you google if you’ll find it. It’s mostly talking about running when injured but I hope if you listen to it you’ll find it interesting.
8 PM

Hills 45:30 [3] 4.4 mi (10:20 / mi)

Virtual bog trot while Lucy was at scouts on the KF. getting the route a bit wrong alas. Not going all out but a reasonable tempo run. Felt good.

Off-road running 5:00 [3] 0.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Very token warm up and down

Thursday Apr 29, 2021 #

Note

Been really suffering with lack of sleep. Working too late and Bertie teething meant 2 nights in a row of less than 4 hours sleep. I get really dizzy when I get this tired so not really able to run at the moment.

Sprintelope went down well though and kids enjoyed the organising.

Bertie’s birthday today too. He’s so amazingly perfect - even if I do say so myself (apart from perhaps the lack of sleep!)

Intervals - long endurance 38:40 [3] 4.73 mi (8:10 / mi)

2 x Warriston Triangle (1.36miles) in 9:16 and 9:17 w 1 min.

Sore fibula head joint on both sides. Think this is ITB. Not surprising as legs full of sciatica.

Orienteering - training 46:44 [3] 5.35 mi (8:44 / mi)

Sprintelope reccying from Peffermill while Lucy did football.

Orienteering - training 1:16:44 [3] 6.7 mi (11:27 / mi)

Gentle run from Gladhouse with Will and Briony. Followed by my annual outdoor dip. I managed 5 strokes before my fingers stopped cooperating.

Hills 29:01 [3] 2.81 mi (10:20 / mi)

And Bertie passed the Covid test first thing (not a bad turn around. Test taken at 6:30pm, result at 8am the next morning) and he was looking better (even though he and I have been up since 3:30) so he was off to nursery. This is good. Work is incredibly busy. But we clocked off at 5 as it’s my birthday so I made everyone head to Florterstone. I warmed up by running up turnhouse and back down then did a turnhouse o course with Laurence. Brutally steep course, but good.

Orienteering - training 38:21 [3] 2.55 mi (15:02 / mi)

Hilly

Wednesday Apr 21, 2021 #

Note

It was a really nice evening, and I had cleared my family taxiing responsibilities so I could join the trotettes as they were off to the Pentlands. Then I picked Bertie up from nursery with a temperature of 40.5 and it was a COVID test followed by a night in with cuddles. Cuddling babies is nice, but running is too.

Tuesday Apr 20, 2021 #

Note

Too much work then a sickly child prevented running plans today. Ah well.

Monday Apr 19, 2021 #

7 PM

Intervals - long endurance 50:00 [3] 6.1 mi (8:12 / mi)

2 x 5, 2 x 3, 2 x 1. Nice night for it and felt good for once.

Sunday Apr 18, 2021 #

10 AM

Road running 18:58 [3] 2.14 mi (8:52 / mi)

Over to Frandy’s to pick up the car we left there last night. Felt ok so might be getting better.

Orienteering - training 1:00:00 [3]

Still ill.

Not my o training but Lucy’s. Dalkeith CP doing a green Mark hung for the students. Great to get out of Edinburgh to see some trees. Lucy as ever is a good orienteer but struggles to motivate herself out of competition. She is most definitely a competitor above all else. She only really got going when I told her at 6 that she’d be allowed to skip to the finish from 12 if she did the rest of the course properly - i.e. stop the chit chat and run. At the finish her comment was that she liked me shadowing as I wasn’t as strict as Dad, but dad didn’t make her go through the brambles as much as I did - he suggests that they run around them instead.

Thursday Apr 15, 2021 #

Note

Bit ill. Some sort of allergic reaction.

Tuesday Apr 13, 2021 #

12 PM

Off-road running 50:00 [3] 5.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Jogged down to Haggis Knowe with Ray and started a virtual bog trot, only to bail fairly quickly as I felt shocking. A bit ill last night so no dinner. That probably didn't help.

Monday Apr 12, 2021 #

7 PM

Intervals - short and speedy 47:00 [3] 6.0 mi (7:50 / mi)

Intervals - 1,2,3,4,5,4,3,2,1 along the innocent railway while Lucy was at Peffermill. Legs not as tired as expected after yesterday.

Off-road running 2:25:00 [3] 10.5 mi (13:49 / mi)

Oleg's Enduro

More HBT challenge fun. Oleg set up an Enduro, which seems to be where a load of Strava segments are strung together into a run. I did it with my friend Mo who is a bit quicker than me but it really didn't matter. Jog to the start, do the segment, regroup at the end, jog to the next one. Brilliant fun. Strava here:

https://www.strava.com/activities/5107113344

Segments were:

Hillend Direct
Bogwall
Bench to Allermuir
Traverse in Stile
Bell's Hill Sunnyside
Harbouring About
Bonaly Lap
Capelaw Zigzag
Bypassing Tourists
Hill-end.

Walk 2:00:00 [3] 6.2 mi (19:21 / mi)

Another walk, from Loanhead exploring Bilson Glen and Polton mill / Mavisbank House. Really nice little trip (tho the kids might not agree.
4 PM

Intervals - long endurance 1:00:00 [3] 6.9 mi (8:42 / mi)

8, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1.

Felt terrible, but that will be the lack of sleep and the earlier walk. Got it done. Did some drills after, which I probably ought to have done before. The reps might have hurt less then. Around the meadows, which were hooching with police.

Drills 5:00 [3]

Walk 50:00 [3] 3.0 mi (16:40 / mi)

Family walk up Allermuir with the kids in the most horrific weather to catch up with a friend of Ray’s who was doing 24hrs of running up Allermuir from Swanston. Really picked great weather for it. Then ray joined him for an hour as we sheltered from the wind and rain in the car.

Trail running 1:31:00 [3] 9.38 mi (9:42 / mi)

Lucy’s football was cancelled, so I was FREE for the night. Hot footed it to trotettes for 5 x 2mins on Blackford hill and a trip around braids. Caught up with Tessa too. Training doesn’t get better than that.

Off-road running 1:36:56 [3] 9.07 mi (10:41 / mi)

Had a bit of a wild post-cycle dinner with friends (needed quite a few warning drinks) so was a bit tough to discover I’d drunkenly agreed to a long 9am run with a much fitter friend in the Pentlands. Ouch! Came home, ate lunch, spent the afternoon in bed.

Note

Sad news on the death of Martin Hyman. He gave so much to the runners of Edinburgh, the British orienteering squad in the 80s and 90s and the Scottish hill running community. The kids loved his junior hills races - lots of chocolate at the finish, prizes for muddiness, and a certificate signed by an Olympian. His weekly training sessions were the bedrock of my training when I was at my best (and uninjured), and I have taken bits from his training talks at squad weekends and built them into my training. He will be sorely missed.

Cycle 2:00:00 [3]

With friends, which significantly reduced the Lucy whinge factor, which significantly increased my enjoyment of the cycle. Musselburgh, and a bit more. Very windy but the cycle path felt sheltered coming back. 22 miles.
10 AM

Trail running 35:00 [3] 3.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Down and back

XC / road / hill race 39:20 [3] 2.77 mi (14:12 / mi)

The Arthur’s Seat handicap is run backwards in April. I took my phone with me for once and stopped to take some pics. It was halfway to whinny when I stopped to take some pics of the crags that I realised I had forgotten to start my watch - damn.

So I ran the whole thing - whinny, Dunsapie, Crow, Summit, Nether then the crags and back to the start, which I ran through and on to where I started my watch so that I had a time for the lap. Fun running it the other way.

Sunday Apr 4, 2021 #

10 AM

Trail running 1:08:29 [3] 8.05 mi (8:30 / mi)

Run with Loz over braids, Mortonhall, BBVP and meadows.

Orienteering - training 6:38 [3] 1.4 km (4:44 / km)

Knock out sprint simulation with the students. Pollock. Took Laurence along. Set off on a “choose which of the 3 options” then into a course. Great fun, close race with Louise A and Laurence. Just managed to hold off Laurence until the end. He got a head in part, and was taking different routes too so was looking at his map not just sitting in.

Orienteering - training 8:50 [3] 1.2 mi (7:22 / mi)

Final. Mairi joined us this time, and it was her and Laurence with me a bit behind. We were close a lot of the way but he pulled away from me with Mairi at the end to beat me for the first time. Good to see him navigating and running hard, even though getting beaten by him for the first time smarts a bit.

Really great training just by the house. Thanks Mark and Peter!

Road running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Jogging there and back. Should have done some more really.

Intervals - short and speedy 40:00 [3] 4.85 mi (8:15 / mi)

From peffermill. Down to the innocent railway then 10 x 2 mins on, 1 min off. Bloody cold when out of the sun. Then came back to Peffermill for Lucy’s goalie training to run over by 30 mins. Nearly hypothermic by the end.

Celebration time here though. Home schooling officially over. Thank fuck for that. Only 2.5 weeks of trying to entertain kids in the Edinburgh city region now. Ffs.
