Note
slept:7.0 (rest day)

3 days orienteering and a 'traditional' pre rest day celebration meant a day off is needed. Last day of July. August is when plans start. Might have to start warming up / down before / after races, and doing drills, trying out Tarmac again etc.

Orienteering - race 1:04:00 [3] 8.5 mi (7:32 / mi)
slept:7.5

6 day day 3.

Massive improvement on previous days, but that is not really saying much. At any other point over the last few years this would have been a poor run. Just now though it seems pretty good.

I took all of the straight options as it is better not to run on sand or hard surfaces for my achillies. Bit of a killer in this sapping terrain. Big mistake at 6 due to the mapping of rides, then just got really dehydrated and tired towards the end. Stumbling the last few controls in a dehydrated, exhausted mess.

3days on the trot though, and the total time is way more orienteering racing than I put together in may and June put together. Achillies feeling ok too. Got tired towards the end. Hopefully I'll be able to start training soon.

Orienteering - race 34:00 [3] 4.6 mi (7:23 / mi)
slept:9.0

I didn't think I could get worse at orienteering. I was wrong! Ran from 15-17. Couldn't work out why I had to relocate. Oh dear! Yesterday I went from first to 36th (out of 42 - quite an impressive drop in w21e in the uk) on 6-7, today went from a 25sec lead at number 15 to disqualified. Nice. I can hear Toni saying 'take the positives', but as usual I am ignoring him...

Orienteering - race 1:05:00 [3] 8.0 mi (8:07 / mi)
slept:8.0

Scottish 6 day day 1 lossie.

Motoring along quite nicely. Had to avoid the path option as it was too sandy for achillies. Did a loop around the hill at 5 as I ran past the control thinking a control on a path couldn't be mine 30secs maybe. Got a bit bored at 7 and ended upon the wrong bit of forest. Lost loads of time (c 12 mins). Rest was fine, just a bit downhearted. I ran straight everywhere as the paths were too sandy. 13 felt like a real slog. Dumped at least 2 mins at 15.

Achillies on waking - 6 (made sure I left my feet hanging off the end of the bed)
Calf on waking - 5
Achillies when running -5 (it could have done without the headless chickening - I was running on it for too long)
Calf in running - 6

Pissed off at 7. I have started to have a real aversion to not knowing where I am. Not good when I am orienteering so badly! Things are not clicking just now. Not happy with it at all.

Saturday Jul 27, 2013 #

Note

No time. Would have been nice to check the achillies but no time. Calf on waking - 6. Achillies on waking - 5. Need to maybe lie with my feet off the end of the bed so they stretch the achillies. I usually lie with my feet pointing all night.

Cycle commute via doctors and physio.

Mmmmm. Loadsa sleep. The kids are in Aberdour. Achilles on waking - 4, calf on waking - 4. Not as drastically bad as I expected but it is worse than recently.

I have a plan for the next few months from the physio. It starts after the 6 day, which I will sort if see how it goes.

Off-road running 34:00 [3] 5.5 mi (6:11 / mi)

Nice evening, no kids, a run with tessa in the pentlands. Not far in, I realised the achillies was just too bad, so we had to walk. Grrr! My physio is back from his travels now though, appointment tomorrow.

Cross training 1:00:00 [3] 26.0 km (2:18 / km)
slept:8.0

Morning off with Lozza, then cycle commute into work and back.

Morning calves - 8
Morning achillies - 4 so no running.

Physio - general S&C 25:00 [3]

Usual. 5 mins wobble board, 3 x 3 exercises and 5 min massage.

Note

This training is geared to trying to build up running and settle down injuries. Running has to be off road, and is better undulating, which generally means steep here in Edinburgh. the aim is to be able to do some proper training by September. I don't think, from this weeks training, that every day of the 6 day is possible or wise. Probably wiser than the marathon du medoc on 8th September though. Might have to see how quickly I can walk 26 miles ... drinking wine ... eating cheese ... hot sun beating down ... in fancy dress (theme - science fiction)... Other homework to be completed before September is to get someone who'll help me plan races etc to 2014 and help me technically; and also to have some fun! Email me any suggestions.

Off-road running 38:25 [3] 5.6 mi (6:52 / mi)

Through pollock, up Salisbury crags, then up the bog on the eastern side, then took a sharp left I didn't know existed before the path got to the end of the bog. Down the 7 hills descent, then up the dry dam, taking a brutal path from the Corrie bottom upwards, then decided the calves had enough. Jogged back to the edge of the park and walked back on the asphalt, doing drills. Hilly. It's going to kill my calves tomorrow. No exercises as I think I 'loaded' my calves enough today, but drills, wobble board, foam roller and massage.

Off-road running 35:00 [3] 6.0 mi (5:50 / mi)
slept:9.0

Hbt handicap. Boiling hot. Got the harshest handicap of all. With big d and behind sula and claire g! Wtf! My protests of 'I've been averaging 5 miles a week sine April' fell on deaf ears. Skipped the drinks stations in any case, but did my forward roll, downhill press ups and goosestepping.

Brown crop top sun tan lines! You should have been there tessa. Lucy and I only stayed for one at the kilderkin after, so missed the chat.

Physio - general S&C 25:00 [3]
slept:8.5

These rest days trying to get the calves better seem to be turning into a zombie. So unbelievably tired. I'll have to get back into running tomorrow to wake me up. 5 min wobble board, 5 mins massage, 3 x exercises to try to prepare the legs.

Tuesday Jul 16, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Achillies surprisingly stiff today, so no cycling to see what difference if any that makes. Calf tightness is winding my achillies up. Massaged achillies / calf

I have pulled out of the euromeeting, just going to do the 6 day. The sprint was out of the question due to injury, and i will do the other races anyway as part of the six day. Holefully the change will make for a more laid back week.

Note
(rest day)

A bad week. Probably need a break from orienteering for a bit, after the six day. Concentrate on getting running again.

Orienteering - race 45:00 [3]

Woc relay. Probably the performance I am least proud of for a good few years. No excuses for doing that badly. Just terrible.

Friday Jul 12, 2013 #

Orienteering - race 43:07 [3] 5.0 mi (8:37 / mi)

It was a game of two halves. Lets make sure tomorrow's relay is just a game of the better half...

Thursday Jul 11, 2013 #

Orienteering - race 37:00 [3] 3.5 mi (10:34 / mi)

Woc middle qualifier. Not pretty.

Wednesday Jul 10, 2013 #

Cross training 55:00 [3]

15 min warm up jog from the hut, then drills and exercises. The jog was through the long style forest surrounding the complex. managed to get myself down again - frustrated not to run woc in it. Forests do not get any better than that. Sad

Tuesday Jul 9, 2013 #

Orienteering - training 50:18 [3] 4.8 mi (10:29 / mi)

Course with 220m climb, in the middle / relay adjacent forest. A bit long for our middle qual (3.6/110m, final 5k/195m) but I wanted some hills. Cut down on the green today, and the course was in terrain which is hopefully more like what we will get in the races. Nice nice nice! I was cruising smoothly and with few mistakes. Feeling strong in the rough stuff, and my Achilles behaved itself. Even hector had to say he had a stick in his eye to explain why i beat him to sone controls...

For the races here I will focus on the following:

Plan
Direction out of the control
Compass

If I get those three right I should do ok. I have no idea how fast I am running just now, so have no expectations, but if I stick to the above I should qualify
and hopefully get too 30 regardless of pace and I should be happy with that.

Cross training 35:00 [3]

Went aquajogging but then realised my garmin was out of battery so couldn't do reps. Did a swim w/up of 750m the.n some general aquajogging.

Physio - general S&C 50:00 [3]

10 min jog then 15min drills then 25min exercises. This, aquajogging, and cycle commute has been the story of my life recently...
8 PM

Orienteering - training 1:45:00 [3]

Its a no running day today due to achillies (grr) so a walk in the woods instead, to try to calm myself down after watching the insanely exciting woc sprint on tv with the rest of the team. World Cup final forest again. Did the tricky bit I stuffed up on right, but then again I was walking...

Orienteering - training 50:00 [3]

O training. The green stuff here is tricky, so I thought I would practice it but getting liz to plan me a course in the green. It was, well pretty green. Different sorts of green. I was going well until I duffed one in one of those bits of green that is a felled area with young trees in. Not good. Then the next one was a v long leg through green. Got 75% of the way fine then really stuffed up. Had to safety bearing myself out if there. Useful session. I learnt a lot about the mapping of veg. Not entirely pleasant though!

Orienteering - training 1:30:00 [3]

Not feeling great so a walk in the woods used by the World Cup final last year. Useful for clearing my head, as well as good o practice.

Cross training 45:00 [3]

Aquajogging. Swim w/up 500m then 30x45 on 15off. Fun...
10 AM

Orienteering - training 33:00 [3] 3.8 mi (8:41 / mi)

Middle model. Really nice forest. Fun. Achillies ok, calf ok. Can't sleep. Oh well...

Went aquajogging in the afternoon (500m swim warm up then 30x 45secs on, 15 off) in the hope that I would get tired, but it didn't work. I got tired just after, slept for 2 hours, and can't sleep now.
