9 AM

Cycle commute 20:00 [3] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Pootle down to Little France and back to get some tests done. Fine
6 PM

Intervals - long endurance 37:00 [3] 5.0 mi (7:24 / mi)

Jog down to the Holyrood XC field, then 6x2mins fast 2mins slow on the grass, then jog on to judo.
7 PM

Judo 1:00:00 [3]

8 PM

Trail running 18:20 [3] 1.8 mi (10:11 / mi)

Jog home through the bog.

Monday May 30, 2016 #

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Cycle to work. Wow - my plantar fasciitis REALLY didn't like yesterday's running. It has calmed down a lot recently with my road running. Back to excruciating pain this morning. Interesting.
5 PM

Trail running 44:00 [3] 5.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

I need to get a new garmin. Not being able to judge pace is annoying. Blackford hill, morningside and back through the meadows.

Sunday May 29, 2016 #

9 AM

Off-road running 1:20:00 [3] 8.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Early morning pentlands jaunt with Graeme. It has been months since I ran with company and it was lovely. Hilly, and v rough in places, and this was my first off-road since the JOK weekend. I was pleased that my calf seemed to cope. Got a bit tight by the end, but ok.

I haven't been running much recently, as I have been ill, busy and stressed. Hoping for a better week this week.

Thursday May 26, 2016 #

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Felt better this morning. Panic as I can't find my bike, then remember that I left it on the campervan, all night, unlocked. Still there, not nicked. Phew!
12 PM

Intervals - short and speedy 30:00 [3] 4.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

10 x 1min on 30 secs off. Killer. First time I have done anything like this for years, and my whole body was in pain. It surprises me how much all over body strength running like this takes. I did 1 x 1min at the end all out. My body seemed stiff, and lacking full movement in my left hip, and I seem to have pulled something in my right hip.

Wednesday May 25, 2016 #

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Cycle. A bit ill so no running. I need to get back to the GP sometime - get some more blood tests done.

Tuesday May 24, 2016 #

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

8.5 hours sleep and still weary.
12 PM

Intervals - long endurance 43:33 [3] 5.8 mi (7:31 / mi)

Run incorporating 6 x 2min fast, 2min slow. Felt really good.

Monday May 23, 2016 #

7 AM

Cycle commute 30:00 [3] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

12 PM

Trail running 53:25 [3] 6.21 mi (8:36 / mi)

Felt shocking. So tired.
1 PM

Cycle commute 1:25:00 [3] 5.5 mi (15:27 / mi)

Then to fife to get Lucy. Tired.

Then from Waverley to judo and back up the hill home, with Lucy so it doesn't count. So so tired. Bed early. I have got to stop doing so much cycling. My hip/SI is really not happy with it. Both ankle joints seem to be persistently locking up these days too. Pass the Zimmer frame!

Sunday May 22, 2016 #

9 AM

Trail running 1:32:57 [3] 10.64 mi (8:44 / mi)

From Aberdour, along the coastal path. I was aiming for Kinghorn, it was sensationally sunny, and the tide was v low, so when I got to Burntisland leisure centre I just had to keep going to black rock. I ran around. It was mid shin deep. Then got to Kinghorn and was going to get to the road and the coastal path, but it was too tempting, and I went back around the rock (knee deep) and home. Just brilliant running. I felt good the whole way, and the weather and views couldn't be better.
11 AM

Cycle commute 1:40:30 [3] 5.5 mi (18:16 / mi)

21.3 miles

Got back from my run, and Lucy was disgusted that I was still around. She insisted I went home as she wanted grannie and gramps to herself. So I had a quick shower to wash off the sand, the cycled home via the falls cafe, and a rainstorm.

Saturday May 21, 2016 #

10 AM

Trail running 40:00 [3] 4.5 mi (8:53 / mi)

Jog to judo and back. I felt so horrific. Big night out the night before. I thought I might die.

Friday May 20, 2016 #

6 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Forgot I have to pop to school mid-morning today, so need to work from home. Early morning cycle to work and back to get my laptop.

Thursday May 19, 2016 #

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Ducklings! On the canal! Super-cute!
5 PM

Fartlek 47:20 [3] 6.0 mi (7:53 / mi)

The prescription today was 6 miles with 10x1 min on 1min off and 6 x 30secs on, 30secs off. I worked through lunch and then went straight out from work, up to the canal, did it, then back and cycled home.

I started the third rep and felt unbelievably dizzy, so stopped as I was struggling to run in a straight line. I stopped, rested for a bit and felt better, dithered as to what to do, and decided to keep running. Felt much better after, and did the rest of the session feeling strong.

Wonder why I felt dizzy. It was possibly after such a busy day, or some new medication that is making me feel ill - I've been feeling sick all day. Either that or a heart attack. I cycled home and poured myself a massive glass of medicinal red wine (which I don't normally do), just to be on the safe side.

Note

I find junior selection totally perplexing. The summer tour selections have been announced, and it seems that in order to be considered for the pre-JWOC training camp you need to have been in the british squad for at least a year. This would be fine if being in the British squad didn't cost hundreds of £ each year. What about those who can't / won't pay? And what about those who have improved a lot over the year, nearly made the jwoc team this year, are likely to be up there next year, but weren't good enough to make the squad last year? Clueless.

I just hope things improve drastically before my kids get anywhere near this stage in orienteering!
6 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Insomnia, so got into work early. Four weeks and a few days left, and so much to get through.

Bonked on the way home. Horrible. Not sure why.
12 PM

Trail running 50:00 [3] 6.21 mi (8:03 / mi)

Easy HW. Watch not working.

Tuesday May 17, 2016 #

Note

I was going to go to judo, but I got home and Ray was ill so I had to be a dutiful wife / mother instead. Last year I would have got away with this. It is probably best that I don't do a week of training in one day anyway.
8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

12 PM

Fartlek 54:04 [3] 6.6 mi (8:11 / mi)

Steady to the canal, then a fartlek session between the bridges, with jogging inbewteen. Some reps 20secs, some nearly 5 mins. 10 min jog back down after.

Monday May 16, 2016 #

11 AM

Road running 51:11 [3] 6.28 mi (8:09 / mi)

Felt terrible - I am so slow just now. Slightly niggly. My pf is still a big problem. This isn't helped by my appalling circulation- worse than ever right now. Gloves on in the sun! I have special plantar fasciitis flip flops ("comforthotics" - ridiculously cheap from amazon) that mean I am able to walk pain free in the morning, but my feet are permanently frozen so flip flops are out. I need to find those socks with toes.

On the whole though I can't complain. A little bit of running always makes me smile!

Sunday May 15, 2016 #

11 AM

Road running 12:00 [3] 1.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

Jog to the start, and jog back from the finish to the shops

Orienteering - training 1:03:00 [3] 7.5 mi (8:24 / mi)

Big weekend race, that I had to retire from earlier this year. This was to liven up a run more than anything else. It was fun. Good variety. The flesh market close, and the run to the esplanade were killers. They must have been the king of the mountain legs. The only spot I was totally flummoxed was the leg to the control under standard life. That was a good 5secs of standing there thinking wtf. I quite liked the controls in the meadows at the end. I think it helped not having the kites there, as you had to actually work out which bench / lamppost it was rather than just running to the kite. Yeh, I must have been running fast enough for the course not to be dull, as I found it interesting.

Saturday May 14, 2016 #

Note
(rest day)

The training plan said rest, which seemed v lazy, so I was going to run, but I woke feeling fake-fluey so took it easy instead.

2 (running) races entered. Exciting stuff.

Friday May 13, 2016 #

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

This whole week the wind has been blowing in the opposite direction to usual. Head wind all the way home. I'd rather face it on the way in when I am still half asleep.

Picked up the kids then we all cycled to L's guitar lesson, with me trying to cycle into a cold wind while carrying his guitar. I'll not be repeating that for a while

Thursday May 12, 2016 #

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Sore triceps today. Didn't make it to orienteering last night due to van problems. Took it to the garage this morning.
1 PM

Intervals - long endurance 1:05:00 [3] 7.8 mi (8:20 / mi)

10 min jog either end of 6 x 6mins with 90secs walk recovery. Killer. Nothing hurt that shouldn't have, so that was good. All fairly even considering back was into a headwind. Along the canal from work to Ratho. I like to think I am back to being able to road run hard every other day. Famous last words...

Wednesday May 11, 2016 #

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Rest day. Awaiting massive Judo DOMS. My arms are not made for that sort of stuff.

I will be taking the kids to Hillend to go orienteering later. Still retired. Going to an orienteering event just for the kids is bizzare. Ray told some keen-on-orienteering parents at school that I'd be there though, so I have to turn up incase they do.

Tuesday May 10, 2016 #

12 PM

Road running 35:20 [3] 4.5 mi (7:51 / mi)

Same as yesterday. My hip feels locked just now. Need to stretch it out.

It was v sunny, so I decided to try out running in my orienteering eye protection glasses. I want to get used to them so I can wear them if / when I go orienteering again. I put the yellow lenses in, so it just looked like I was running in shades. I don't have sight problems, so I never wear glasses, and they made me feel q dizzy. I have three other pairs to try, and I think the clear lenses might be easier to run in.
6 PM

Road running 34:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:30 / mi)

Down to judo and back. Down through the bog, which is actually off road, but it was so dry it doesn't count. Took the Eastern path, which was so dry I didn't get muddy - very rare. I seemed to survive the 'terrain' aspect of the run without getting injured.
7 PM

Judo 1:00:00 [3]

Judo! Well not really. The judo club that my kids go to puts on a women only strength session on Tuesday nights, 7-8 (Edinburgh Judo if you want to come along, details on their website). I thought it might be fun to try it out, cause the club has got a great atmosphere and the session leaders (both got medals in Glagow 2014) are a laugh. It was really good. Warm up was dodgy ball, with the big physio balls who's name escapes me. Reminded me of primary school. Then drills stuff, then 30mins of circuits, then a 'who can hold a kettle bell out in front for longest', stretching, then chat.

It was the parkrun of circuit sessions. There was the widest range of abilities I have ever seen in a fitness class. Great work out for everyone, at everyone's level. And yup, I got gubbed by everyone at the kettle bell comp.

Monday May 9, 2016 #

2 PM

Road running 35:20 [3] 4.5 mi (7:51 / mi)

Round the seat and on to coop / school.

It was boiling (for Edinburgh) and I felt shocking. No pain from calf, and my hip problems seem to be calming down.

Sunday May 8, 2016 #

Cycle commute 45:00 [3] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

I was talked into going mountain biking. I hated every minute, mainly cause I was on Ray's dad's bike which is so bad it is like an instrument of torture. My bike has a broken spoke, so is in for repair.

Saturday May 7, 2016 #

Road running 50:00 [3] 6.0 mi (8:20 / mi)

Single mumming this weekend so I had planned to simplify logistics for the weekend to preserve energy - less stress the better, I have no idea how single mums with endless kids don't go mad.

So drive everywhere. Except setting off for Laurence's football the van won't start. It's only liberton, we'll cycle. Except my bike is broken and in for repair. So I run, the kids cycle and we get there on time. Then Lucy and I need to get to judo. So back home (I cycle Laurence's bike, as he is going to a friends after and they are driving home) ditch stuff, pack judo stuff, I run and Lucy cycles to judo and home. The logistics of parenting are hilariously finely tuned.

Hmmm. Need to get the breakdown people out and rearrange this afternoons logistics too. My calf was painfree :-) My SI / hip less so.

Note

Not doing any physio until my hip is less sore, which sounds counterproductive but isn't. Nice afternoon going around harlaw with the neighbours, kids on bikes. Lucy cycled 10 miles today and did a judo session too, which is epic for her.

Friday May 6, 2016 #

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

My hip was not feeling cooperative this morning.
4 PM

Road running 16:00 [3] 2.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Run to dance class and back. SI / hip playing up for the first time in years. Ah well, single parenting all this weekend so no opportunities for more running anyway.

Wednesday May 4, 2016 #

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Tuesday May 3, 2016 #

9 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

12 PM

Road running 39:00 [3] 4.8 mi (8:07 / mi)

Feeling shit. Tired and miserable. So the hearty faceful of hail 5mins in was actually quite a welcome refresher.

Monday May 2, 2016 #

Note

My fitness is such that I've been thinking of nothing but Roy Hattersley MP on my two most recent runs. When HIGNFY replaced Roy Hattersley with a tub of lard it was as Roy Hattersley had dropped out at the last minute for the third time, they were unable to find a replacement, and it was thought that a tub of lard was "liable to give much the same performance and imbued with many of the same qualities" as Roy Hattersley. I keep mulling over who would come first in a race: me, Roy Hattersley or the tub of lard. The tub of lard most certainly is "liable to give much the same performance and imbued with many of the same qualities" as me just now.
5 PM

Road running 45:00 [3] 5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Jog down to the physio and back. More tape. All runs under 5 miles this week. It was sore, and I have been miserable all day which didn't help my frustration tolerance levels. Grr. Decide to do some road races, pick some that look good and they are all fully subscribed. It is so shit. Punters are suffocating our sport. Take the scottish 5k champs. There has always been entry on the night available in the past - not now. 500 people already signed up. If you aren't a member of a scottish athletic club (you know who you are), or aren't capable of running a decent 5k then you shouldn't get in. I could go on but probably best not. I am feeling particularly bitter. If you're injury-prone you simply can't enter things weeks in advance. If you are a total lazer that doesn't train hard enough to get injured, you can block book all the races, one every weekend, jogging around a half marathon in hours and hours. Right I really must stop, before I offend anyone left that I haven't offended yet.

Physio - general S&C 10:00 [3]

Sunday May 1, 2016 #

Note

The JWOC team is out! No it's not really, but I think the races were JK, northern champs and boc long which are all over, do I have picked the teams:

Girls: Alice, Beth, Fiona, Julie, Pippa, Sarah, res: Jenny

Boys: Dan, Dane, Harrison, Michael, Sasha, Will, res: Joe or Tim

Few caveats:

I really don't know any of them so I don't know who had which excuses for races, who was injured, who is in favour, who isn't, this is just from looking at the results. I think in many ways that's how selections should be made. The exception is Megan CD who I think is really talented, but I wouldn't pick her as I think coming back from injury it is easier to have one goal to focus on, and WUOC would be a better goal.

The men's team is harder to pick than the women's. It's closer.

Everyone runs everything unless they want to 'rest up', but they should be reminded that unless they have a serious chance of winning the discipline they are resting up for, the 'resting up' is riduculously pretentious, and denying someone else the massive benefit of experience running jwoc races gives.

Missing out is horrid. The standard has gone up a lot in the past year. Big hugs to those who don't make the team. Everyone in the woc team has been gutted about missing as selection at some point. I n the long term it builds resilience. But at the time it is the shittiest thing ever.

Who did anyone else pick?

Physio - general S&C 5:00 [3]

6 PM

Road running 1:00:00 [3] 7.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

After a ridiculously ridiculous day*, a jog down to Portobello high street, then right, then onto the prom at the end, along to the espy then left and home. When I crossed the hight street on the way home things were pretty sore, but I still had a good 3 miles to go. I couldn't walk the whole way back, so I ran 5mins, ninja walked 1-1:30 and got home ok that way.

On reflection maybe going from 2.5 miles to 7.5 in one day was a bit of an ambitious rehabilitation program, but I enjoyed it and don't think I have necessarily set myself back, just maybe need to take things a bit slower for a few days. I'm off to the physio again tomorrow anyway so it is now his problem.

*it was my birthday a few weeks ago. It wasn't a big one - believe it or not it's actually been a few years now since I turned 30 - so when Lucy asked what I was doing for my party, I said I wasn't having one. This did not compute with her. 6 year old's lives are built around birthday parties. She decided that I was going to have a party after all. The theme was going to be robots, and she had already invited her friends. So this morning I made a robot cake for me, for my party, with 5 x 6 year olds. This afternoon was the party. I had to organise a robot-themed treasure hunt, a Lego robot building competition, a party tea and playing in the garden for 2 hours. There is NOTHING I dread more than hosting kids parties, but actually it was bearable. We didn't lose anyone, no one locked themselves in the loo and refused to come out, and none of the kids turned to me and said 'this seems to be getting out of control' all of which has happened during our parties in the recent past. I was mid-cake-decorating-crisis in the morning, as the World Cup sprint qual was drawing to a close and I was getting the post-race chat from Ruth. It was a sharp reminder of what you escape when you go on international trips. Must get less crocked and get training!
