Note

Lucy's fist solo course. Dropped 20 mins by taking a wrong turning and running downhill to the road, but was put back on track by some kind strangers. She was so chuffed with herself!
12 PM

Orienteering - race 48:00 [3] 5.4 mi (8:53 / mi)

Scottish 6 day - day 2. Balfour forest

This was quite a featureless forest, but the course took us around the good bits so was nice enough. Wobbles at 10 and 11 = 3rd.

Trail running 5:00 [3] 0.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Run to the start with MC, before Jon X hover into view and the pace dropped to a chatty walk. I think it was like that anyway.

Orienteering - race 50:00 [3] 5.6 mi (8:56 / mi)

Scottish 6 day - day 1. Glen Tanar

Tough area, tiring course. Glad it was nice and short as I has Lucy to shadow afterwards.

Off-road running 20:00 [3] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Jog to start. Bit of a panic. Had no one to look after L2. Left her at the string course with some friendly faces.

Off-road running 15:00 [3] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Shadowing Lucy. Just what you want after finishing your course.

Trail running 42:17 [3] 4.74 mi (8:55 / mi)

Overnighting at Dids' house, before getting the plane home. I took an early morning jaunt around his local lake, stopping for a quick dip at the end. Just stunningly lovely. Great to catch up! Home for the 6 day now. I just love Sweden, but it was good to get to Dids's for a proper cup of Yorkshire tea! Swedes are so crap at tea I could cry.

Orienteering - race 59:03 [3] 5.0 mi (11:49 / mi)

taking a rather more realistic 'difficult 5k' it was still very tough. I did ok though, and navigated better today. I beat Ray, which is the main thing! Started even earlier today, and Ray said it really tracked up. I am not surprised. About 150 people did our course.

Trail running 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

To the start, and then the U1 course with Lucy. I was knackered.

Orienteering - race 1:23:03 [3] 7.5 mi (11:04 / mi)

Oringen day 3.

We went up to the oringen to show the kids what a big event is like. We (I) forgot to bring all compasses and dibbers. dibber hire = £5 pppday. Not cheap! Luckily we managed to scrounge enough from Mike E and Nick B.

I took the early shift both days, starting before 9. You can't enter age class races unless you enter all 5 days, so we were running 'open'. I rather ambitiously chose 'difficult 7.5k'. The forest was tough underfoot, the sort of thing if you are fit and agile you float over. I was not doing any floating. Sore knees prevented any aggression, and I binned about 8 mins getting cocky at number 4, but it was massively fun, and throughly exhausting at the same time.

Trail running 41:54 [3] 4.42 mi (9:29 / mi)

Tried to get on the Sunne eljusspar, but ended up on the mountain bike trails instead. It was very hilly and a bit dull. Maybe more fun if you were gunning it on a bike.

Trail running 41:52 [3] 4.55 mi (9:12 / mi)

Little mooch in Nalavi forest, which I have a map for at home. It's not a very exciting forest anyway, and I have done it time and time again. Needed to move though, as staying with such good hosts is bit like being a member of a permenant eating society. My knees were v sore.

Note

Catching up with old friends in Sweden, swimming in lakes, football and trampolining. I shouldn't come to Sweden, it's just too nice.

XC / road / hill race 1:40:30 [3] 13.1 mi (7:40 / mi)

Semesterhalven

Our good friend from Sweden Sven organises a race every summer, and always invites us over. We surprised him this year by saying we'd come. He signed us up to our old / new club LK Gränslöst. Sadly Ray's calf is totally wrecked so the I had to do it. So my fourth half marathon this summer took place in Sweden, in 22 degrees (it started at 18:00) on gravel tracks. I was feeling the heat from the start. Got to the first drinks point at 4k and there were two women holding two cups, and the two people in front took two cups each leaving me with nothing. I ought to have stopped to gets one from the table, but I ran on, and cooked a little longer. Some old friends were at 8k on the drinks so I took my time and had a long drink while chatting. The next drinks point was at the start / finish (it was a two lap course) and i had Lucy chucking wet sponges at me which was nice. I was dying to drop out but loyalty to Sven prevented me.the second lap was shorter as we missed off a diversion - just as well. The sun was so very draining for a Brit like me.

Got to the finish, and found myself in the prizes. This was surprising as the race was totally stacked with W40 talent. From the table of random kitchenware on offer, the kids advised me to take a burger grill, which looked marginally more likely to fit in my bag for the flight home, so I did as told. Happy days.

Ray tells me I am limping worse than ever. I was struggling with pins and needles in my feet when I was running too, so I really need to address my knee problems. Sometime. Something is going to go very wrong very soon.

Trail running 31:44 [3] 3.05 mi (10:24 / mi)

Morning jog with v tiredlegs. To AS, the col, front of seat path, dassies and back via the crags. Good to get out before travelling, but v tired legs and quite a sore knee.

Hills 44:59 [3] 5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Hill reps. 30, 60, 90 x 4 up observatory road. Trotter training. I only really went for the BBQ after, but sort of felt I had to earn it. Ouch. So unfit!

Trail running 50:23 [3] 4.4 mi (11:27 / mi)

Hilly jog with Tessa on the seat. I felt so unfit. Nice though.

XC / road / hill race 2:12:00 [3] 11.5 mi (11:29 / mi)

Kentmere Horseshoe

Ray and the kids are in London, Jase's family are away, so we took the opportunity to take a cheeky jaunt to the Lakes for a classic hill race.

It was a bit of a last minute decision, so I was nice and laid back about it. The first two miles or so were congested but there was plenty of opportunity to over take later if capable. I passed people on the descents, felt much better than in Jura / anniversary waltz. Beautiful weather made for excellent views and there was a great river for a post-race dip afterwards. Ahhh, lovely!

Road running 40:41 [3] 5.0 mi (8:08 / mi)

Through grange to the hermitage, then through to Cameron toll and home. Knees, particularly left, were sore today.

Friday Jul 14, 2017 #

Road running 52:00 [3] 6.3 mi (8:15 / mi)

From work, queens drive and back.
9 AM

Cycle commute 36:00 [3] 9.0 mi (4:00 / mi)

Would have been at least 2 mins quicker, perhaps 3 had I not got stuck behind a man walking a bike over the aqueduct. Just as well we were walking because the bike in front was the notorious Edinburgh Polish transvestite canal pusher, a cyclist who likes to push fellow cyclists who ride the aqueduct into the canal. The canal pusher stopped in the middle of the aqueduct, so me and the other guy had to squeeze past her. She started yabbering at him in Polish as he passed, and he obviously hadn't had the pleasure of meeting her before so was pretty confused. Bit early for the fringe isn't it, he commented as I rode by him. I just told him to google Edinburgh cycling canal pusher. Pleased to have stayed on the path.
12 PM

Project agility 1:00:00 [3]

My employer likes to think of itself as really quite cool, so has introduced lunchtime yoga classes. If it was more than once a week it would be really good for me.

Cycle commute 34:32 [3] 9.0 mi (3:50 / mi)

Crashed this morning.

Come up to a blind bridge, ring bell, break slightly, and a cyclist comes out at the last minute with no warning at full pace. I faced a collision / canal / undergrowth choice, and luckily my reflex was pinging myself off into bushes at high speed. My face hit the ground hard, but luckily the ground was covered in the long grasses that were tripping me up last night and it was a nice soft landing. Minor face scrapes, and staved my finger. Ouch. My wrist didn't seem to hurt at the time, but one wrist is sore now, and the other hand has pins and needles and I am struggling to type. Not good.

No rain this morning - yay! Lots of punters out instead - boo!

Orienteering - training 38:02 [3] 3.5 mi (10:52 / mi)

Whinny Hill sprintelope

Much fun, which was surprising considering the veg was up and in kit-ripping mood. We had been warned, but I turned up in shorts anyway. How bad can it be? Bad, very bad!

The (chest high in places) long grasses were quite cumbersome and I was first out and therefore spend a lot of time face down in them as they tripped me up. The gorse was bad, esp 2 controls at the end (the crag at 17 and the 15). The routes I took to these seemed to involve going through as much gorse as possible. The killer for me though was some thistles on one of the early legs (5-ish) and I ended up getting a thorn in the arch of my foot so bad I had to stop and do a full on mid course extraction. Massive. So it was surprising that I enjoyed myself, but I did.

Cycle commute 30 [3] 4.0 mi (8 / mi)

Down from work and back up the hil. Tiring!

Cycle commute 37:00 [3] 9.0 mi (4:07 / mi)

Lozza is at an activity club at Ratho all week, Lucy at the Commie pool. Drop Lucy at 8, drive to Ratho drop Laurence at 9, then gun it along the canal to work. Ray does the opposite in the evening.

Nice to be back cycling the canal. A throughly wet and miserable morning with a headwind too though!

Drove 6 hours home, unpacked, did a weekly shop then flopped.

XC / road / hill race 1:38:50 [3] 13.1 mi (7:33 / mi)

Harris half. Hefty tail wind was welcome on this point to point course. The only head wind was the 3 uphill miles. rained the whole way. Fun though and a good sociable race with plenty of trots present. My knees hurt though. I think I actually might have to do some strength training for the first time in my life to help my old body out.

another running ambition (heb3 t-shirt) ticked off the to-do list. So much more fun than FFS-Jura.

Off-road running 31:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:20 / mi)

6 AM

Cycle commute 1:34:00 [3] 5.0 mi (18:48 / mi)

Cycle to the sprintelope at south queensferry. 19.8miles. I have felt ill since Monday night. I ate something I am allergic too, or it some sort of autoimmune flare. Nausea, stomach pain, brain fog / headache, weak ACHING muscles. Worked from home this morning as I didn't think I could walk the 1.5 miles to work. Tried eating mostly v bland food today (oatcakes) and I felt much better this afternoon, so I reverted to my original plans, and it went ok.

XC / road / hill race 25:36 [3] 3.3 mi (7:45 / mi)

Sprintelope round the housing estate at south queensferry. Fun. I don't think my watch time matches my SI time as I stopped it when I gave directions to some guy who was looking for the event.

Monday Jul 3, 2017 #

Road running 1:10:28 [3] 8.6 mi (8:12 / mi)

Home from work via roseburn cycle path, ferry road cycle path joining into water of leith, then leith links, Easter road and home through holyrood. Getting some longer stuff in as it is 6 weeks until sierre zinal.

Note

Just joined a new running club - LK Gränslöst. Just in time to make my debut for them when we get to Sweden in 2 weeks. V exciting.

One club I won't be joining is 'vegan runners'. I don't think I meet one of the main qualification criteria. I have run alongside one of their members at Skye and Barra. He had to nip into the bushes both races. This is not a great advertisement for Veganisim.

Off-road running 55:53 [3] 5.3 mi (10:33 / mi)

Run from Oban, chucking my stuff in the luggage locker at the station. Tried to do the SIPR Oban stint. I didn't take any navigational aids, and as I went a good mile further, and some of that was wading through waist-deep bracken, I don't think I did the right route.

XC / road / hill race 1:42:42 [3] 13.1 mi (7:50 / mi)

Barrathon. Lovely race. Very strong winds today. Tail winds for a lot of it, then headwinds in the 2nd half. Closing in on that heb3 t-shirt
