Orienteering - race 1:26:43 [3] 6.85 mi (12:40 / mi)

SOL 2 Brown

Tables were turned today as Ray started 4 mins after me. Uphill start, open fell, he was always going to reel me in. A few mins mistake at 3 and he got me. 4 was an epic trudge with not much route choice / thinking, and I asked Ray if I could jack, because I really, really wanted to with every pore of my body. He thought it would be bad form, and I should continue so he could beat me officially (which was a good point), so I kept going, dutifully trudging around. So. Totally. Exhausted. Took a gel at 10-ish and should have taken it earlier as it made me feel better, but there was pretty much just downhill to go when it kicked in. Pleased to survive the gel as it went out of date exactly 3 years ago.

I think two open areas (CSC and this) is my fill for the year.

Trail running 10:31 [3] 0.77 mi (13:40 / mi)

Warm up

Orienteering - race 38:06 [3] 3.4 mi (11:12 / mi)

Very first Scottish Middle Champs

Got to try to win it. Ray starting 2 mins in front. Colin 6 mins. Starter triedto set Fraser p off in between us. I objected at that. I am not a fan of running with others at the best of times, and Fraser makes me giggle too much to concentrate...

On the way to 1 I saw Ray coming out. You are going the wrong way he shouted. When I wasn’t. I knew I was right, but I am so deaf I had to stop to listen properly cause it might have been a message about the kids, so as a mother I worried and stopped to listen properly. Grrr.

Caught him at 2 where he was mucking around. Ran hard to 3 to shake him. He is a stronger runner, so he sat in and sprinted past me to punch first at the control. FFS! Did the same at 4, telling me he’d got a better split. Grr! I relaxed a bit up to 5 and let him run on and take a dubious line. Beat him. Caned it straight to 6, and thought I had lost him to 7 but when I turned to come back up the hill he was there. Picked up colin here.

To 8 it was run hard picking off the green. Not sure what the green would be but it was Rhodis. Colin and Ray got ahead in the descent (need to do more cycling to improve leg strength) and they got to the control first. I thought the contoured fitted but the rhodis didn’t. But they were under the red line. They got ahead further to 9. But to 10 they got too low. I punched first, then Ray after a bit. He chatted to colin at the control, but Colin didn’t see the control, and caned it down the hill after me and Ray, only to have to turn back after a bit. Colin dropped.

Ray got back up with me at 11 asi was really confused. On the map it was a small path to the control, but it was big on the ground. Time loss here. Caned it to 12 trying to drop Ray,13 too, but dying here. Straight to 14 which was masochistic even for me. Died to 15 and finish. Ray took 33 secs out of me here.

Could have run 1 min faster max over the whole course. Totally gutted myself. Will and Grace both had very classy runs indeed!

Massively fun course and terrain - that’s what I call Scottish Orienteering!

Trail running 38:44 [3] 4.48 mi (8:39 / mi)

Run to Blackford Hill from work and up and back. Nice sunny day.

Got an email from the JK organisers. Start times are up. I seem to have an early. What’s that all about? I thought these things were roughly done by a mix of world ranking (for world ranking events) and British ranking (last time I checked I was still top 10). Think I might have to swap courses. I know someone has to do it, but it seems like a fairly pointless waste of money to go that far to start first and not have a competitive run due to wading through piles of crap.

I have become the person I high 5 in this post. 6 day 2013, mispunched earlier in the week so first start on day 6. Area a total braken-fest:

Note
(rest day)

Just exhausted all day. We have been living in a building site since mid January which is fine but makes life incrementally harder, and work has been a drudge for months now, and I have got job interviews this week, and it is all a bit too tiring sometimes. Bed at 9.

Road running 10:08 [3] 1.23 mi (8:14 / mi)

Warm up with Megan

XC / road / hill race 20:35 [3] 3.08 mi (6:41 / mi)

Scottish Road Relays - leg 1

Felt horrendous. I haven’t done enough speed stuff for ages. Yesterday’s cycle certainly didn’t help. Got through it. 2nd vets team.
2 PM

Trail running 44:36 [3] 5.34 mi (8:21 / mi)

Went to pick the kids up from Bonaly, and we had a friend of Loz’s to get too so no room for me in the van. Nice run home from Bonaly. Tired now.

10 AM

Cycle 4:10:06 [3] 49.9 mi (5:01 / mi)

Kids away, parents will play. Cycle to Innerleithen and get the train back from Tweedbank.

Get to Roslin via Little France and the Wisp then onto the new cycle path.

Do you think we should get some food to take with us Ray? I ask.
Nah, it’s not very far, he says. It’s only about 20 miles from Edinburgh, and we’ve done 10 already. I’ve cycled it before.
I thought it was further than that I said.

We cycled another 4 miles to Carrington where we a sign saying Innerleithen 20 miles. WTF says Ray. Personally I was more than a little worried we might hit the wall in the middle of nowhere. We survived to a very good cafe in Innerleithen, after which we did 16 more to the train. A nice outing, all away from busy roads.

Road running 45:00 [3] 5.3 mi (8:29 / mi)

Another day of limited training opportunities. Was going to go off road, before I realised I’d packed the kids off to cubs / scout camp with both head torches. Nice to get out around queens drive in the dark. Niggly left Achilles, caused most likely by going to the track.

School run
7 PM

Intervals - long endurance 28:25 [3] 3.71 mi (7:40 / mi)

Track, again only cause Lucy was at rugby next door. 5 x 1k, as I have no imagination. It felt horrendous the whole thing. Legs dead. Did it though. 3:57, 3:54, 3:53, 3:55, 3:57. Urgh!

And I had to yell at the Napier Tri students for standing on lane 1. I nearly ran full speed into one of the idiots.

Road running 17:40 [3] 1.23 mi (14:22 / mi)

Warm up / down

12 PM

Duddingston to get the van.
11 AM

Off-road running 10:53 [3] 1.0 mi (10:53 / mi)

Warm up and down

Orienteering - race 52:23 [3] 4.08 mi (12:50 / mi)

CSC. Somewhere Glasgow-shire. Blue Women

First start on the Blue Women, I had Sarah Jones starting 4mins behind. Spent the whole race not wanting to get caught, and it was good to have something to spur me on, as it was an area where you needed a bit of enthusiasm- which I didn’t really have. Made it! Woke up a lot of the controls, but I definitely preferred going first in the snow ratherthan just following

We only have two compasses in the Ward family just now. Peter is away so we had a rifle through his room to borrow one. Laurence wanted to borrow it, as Peter’s compass must be pretty special as he is British champion. He was very sad indeed then to have smashed it half way around. Oh dear!

Saturday Mar 16, 2019 #

9 AM

Road running 28:03 [3] 3.03 mi (9:15 / mi)

Meadows with Loz in vile weather. Jog there and a lap of 1 min on 1min jog.

Friday Mar 15, 2019 #

6 AM

Trail running 48:36 [3] 5.38 mi (9:02 / mi)

Best way to guarantee having time to get a run in - go early.

Duddingston industrial estate, up innocent railway, then up the crags, down and up the royal mile to work. The council has cut the thick grass on the slope inbetween the crags and the bog. Cracking fun running where you like for once.

12 PM

Road running 46:43 [3] 4.96 mi (9:25 / mi)

Crap days at work can always be improved with a lunchtime run. Up to the Esplanade, down the Royal Mile, up the Dassies to the summit, and back along Pipers. Breezier than I thought it would be.

Monday Mar 11, 2019 #

Note

Touch of inov-8 foot, but calf niggle has improved.

Exhausted. Think I am still recovering after a weekend shivering. The builders disconnected the heating on Friday, and forgot to fix it before they left. 2/3 weeks and they’ll be gone though!
1 PM

Trail running 32:07 [3] 4.24 mi (7:34 / mi)

Along the canal to Meggetland to get Lucy some rugby socks, with a lap of the pitches thrown in for fun.
3 PM

Road running 10:46 [3] 1.34 mi (8:02 / mi)

To school. I really must stop eating lunch on the days I pick up, and just have something when I get in. Blurgh!
5 PM

Road running 24:49 [3] 2.7 mi (9:12 / mi)

Links and meadows with loz

Orienteering - training 41:50 [3] 3.7 mi (11:18 / mi)

Bowhill. RR local event

We gate crashed a RR local event, as Ian Maxwell had put on some East of Scotland training beforehand. This was great - the kids learned about attackpoint for the first time. RR is such a nice little club, I would almost consider moving to the Borders just to join, and I had forgotten how good Bowhill is. It is lame compared to some Scottish areas, but that’s an unfair comparison and if it was somewhere like the East mids we’d have run many a JK on it by now.

The mapping of the veg seems to be quite seasonal which is a shame as the Ward family are down to 2 compasses now, so Ray and I were running compassless which was tricky with little contour detail. On the way to 15 I bananad massively as I hit a road not knowing if it was the right one and ended off at 90 degrees for a fair distance.

There was a heavy blizzard throughout my run after a nice sunny morning. My hands were so cold I couldn’t manipulate the map properly, and my laces came undone half way around but there is no way my fingers would be able to do them up which made it tricky. A nice day out, and Laurence survived his first solo light green.

Off-road running 13:32 [3] 1.27 mi (10:39 / mi)

Little jaunt running the light green from the finish backward, just checking Laurence wasn’t hypothermic. He was fine, just taking his time and getting it right.

7 AM

Trail running 35:14 [3] 3.84 mi (9:11 / mi)

Its always hard to fit running in on a Friday, esp when I am going out later. Ran to work this morning, over the crags and up the Royal Mile. Lovely getting the Crags to myself in the cold sunshine - meant I could sing along to Roxette as loudly as I wanted. I could have got more miles in if I had gone flatter but it was great to remind myself how lucky we are to have a crazy big rough hill so near the city centre and less than a mile from my front door.

Got to work having timed it precisely for my 8am Friday start and for the first time ever I had to queue for a shower! Given that there are three women's showers, and most in the office start at 9 this was a bit of a shocker
12 PM

Road running 20:00 [3] 2.6 mi (7:42 / mi)

To school with a meadows lap thrown in for fun.

Thursday Mar 7, 2019 #

12 PM

Road running 40:00 [3] 5.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Meadows

2 x 2k (9:08, 8:55 - used to be 8:10-ish - *SIGH*), then I set off on a lap of 1min on 30 secs off, but I had calf problems so stopped after 4. My right calf, half way down, on the inside a bit has been niggly for a while. I am just running on it with the thought that it will pass, but no need to take too many chances.
3 PM

Road running 10:35 [3] 1.35 mi (7:50 / mi)

Wednesday Mar 6, 2019 #

Road running 40:07 [3] 5.08 mi (7:54 / mi)

Tuesday Mar 5, 2019 #

Intervals - long endurance 50:00 [3] 6.0 mi (8:20 / mi)

Saughton for Lucy’s rugby, track session. Martin’s. 5 x 1k w 2 mins. 3:53, 3:52, 3:53, 3:54, 3:57.

Getting annoyed with the Napier Uni triathletes inability to realise that standing in lane 1 while you chat to your friends is not good manners. And I jogged past them on my warm down when they were supposedly doing a 400m rep. I was doing 8min miling. They were having a detailed discussion about WW2 during the rep. Makes you really wonder why they bother.

Sunday Mar 3, 2019 #

Off-road running 39:09 [3] 5.01 mi (7:49 / mi)

More Rugby pitch laps, this time at Marr rugby club, Troon. The Marr rugby club P5 coach was extremely shouty and aggressive, so I kept stopping to watch how things were going, a bit nervous that Lucy might tell the guy to STFU.

Saturday Mar 2, 2019 #

11 AM

Off-road running 39:36 [3] 5.06 mi (7:50 / mi)

Cycled to Meggetland. Ran laps while Lucy did football with school. Very dull running, but gets it done. I then spent the next 4 hours there at a rugby family fun day, which culminated in watching Boroughmuir v Melrose. A very chilly afternoon, but was great fun, and Boroughmuir won!

Friday Mar 1, 2019 #

8 PM

Road running 40:07 [3] 5.0 mi (8:01 / mi)

Late night queens drive. Felt good. Can’t work out if I was inspired by watching the athletics, or the thought that I didn’t want to miss too much athletics.
