7 AM

Trail running 37:53 [3] 3.78 mi (10:01 / mi)

Run to work over the crags.

Had to shout at a cyclist who tried to cycle into me on a pavement. Why does this happen? My kids have managed to cycle on the roads since they were primary school age. They give other cyclists such a bad image. On good Edinburgh cycling news, the council have unveiled plans to have segregated cycling lanes from the meadows to George Street and the canal. Excellent. They now just have to sort out the mess that is Haymarket.

Road running 10:38 [3] 1.3 mi (8:11 / mi)

To school. This gets slower all the time. Luckily the kids have worked out which direction I approach from and walk down to meet me.
9 PM

Tempo run 30:23 [3] 2.91 mi (10:26 / mi)

I’d have run earlier but my legs were exhausted all day and felt better in the evening.

Bit of a tempo run on an HBT handicap route on Arthur’s seat. Start top of the bog, down the right hand side, along the a side of the loch, round the road a bit, up whinny, over the dry dam, down the dassies and over the crags back to the start.

Felt quite sick from dinner a lot of the way, but it was nice as it was wet and misty and I had the place to myself.

Trail running 20:00 [3] 2.4 mi (8:20 / mi)

There and back

Orienteering - race 41:00 [3] 3.5 mi (11:43 / mi)

Scottish relays. Women’s open first leg. Running a ‘b’ course.

Set off slow as ever - and everyone stopped at the far side of the bridge and blocked the path. Got past a few going up the hill, but took a poor route to 3 and then didn’t find it either. Dropped lots here. Was with Ray and Fraser from here on in. Tired up the hill to 5 then got into it after that, and ran well to the finish. Must learn to do a warm up!

Orienteering - race 1:31:00 [3] 6.5 mi (14:00 / mi)

Scottish Champs, Dalbeattie. W21E 6th

Rough, tough course. I was going ok but made lots of big mistakes. 15mins worth in total. I think I just no longer take orienteering seriously enough and just punt around, guessing where the controls might be. Not good. Not quite sure what to do about it. Great area though, unique in Britain.

Laurence walked around M12 cause of his cut knee, and Lucy stormed W10 to take victory. Ray came 2nd on M40, the same course as me, even though I beat him by about 9mins. I’m running that class next year!

5 PM

Road running 26:55 [3] 3.5 mi (7:41 / mi)

A bit along the canal before heading to the sprintelope. Felt truly terrible.
6 PM

Orienteering - training 34:49 [3] 4.23 mi (8:14 / mi)

Sprintelope Astley Ainsley. Long.

I am absolutely exhausted today. Don’t know why. Legs did not work at all, neither did my mind. I completely missed out number 5 by accident, and ran through a patch of nettles and stung my entire left leg, which was a shame as I could do with some sleep, and I can’t see me getting any tonight. My leg is killing! It must be the stingiest time of year. Geez.

Fun to get out there.

Road running 21:20 [3] 2.15 mi (9:55 / mi)

A bit of Laurence shadowing then ran home. Tired. Did I say I was tired? Also my leg stings. Did I tell you how much my leg stings.

Pace of the reps 6:24, 6:37, 6:20, 6:28, 6:30, 6:25.

Legs felt weary.

Saturday May 18, 2019 #

4 PM

Trail running 1:53:06 [3] 11.76 mi (9:37 / mi)

Ray took the kids to the cinema. Rare treat - a few hours to myself!

BBVP up to Swanston, Allermuir, Carketton, Braids and home. Ah, nice!

Thinking of getting the train to the French 5. Anyone know what French overnight trains are like? I think it is just a coach full of bunk beds. Not sure how much sleep we will get, but it would be an adventure.

Friday May 17, 2019 #

6 PM

Trail running 45:00 [3] 5.5 mi (8:11 / mi)

Braids and Blackford with Ray after a very tough day. Sick kids with Laurence first thing after he tripped on the way to school and gashed his knee so deep it needed stitches, then further stresses later....

Felt good, ran hard.

Thursday May 16, 2019 #

8 PM

Road running 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Trying out running again post illness. Jogged up to Martin’s with Lucy on her scooter. Then got her to do some 600s (first line of trees). The first two she went a bit quick, the third was slower, and she took a rest for the 4th and made me to middle meadow walk to tire myself out. Then we did the 5th together. Nice night, and good to get out of the house but legs are feeling the illness.

XC / road / hill race 21:02 [3] 3.18 mi (6:37 / mi)

Pre Scottish Orienteering Board meeting Park Run, Perth

It has been a vomity week, with Lucy vomiting Tuesday, then Laurence vomiting this morning, and I felt vomity today. Made it through the park run, board meeting, trip home in Richard Oxlade’s car, through the front door and to the bathroom before being repeatedly sick.

The park run itself went ok until the bit where we got lost in Muirton housing estate (hence the extra distance) and then there was 1k of grass.

Trail running 3:22 [3] 0.37 mi (9:06 / mi)

Token warm up, trying to find somewhere to be sick. Managed not to need to.

Friday May 10, 2019 #

12 PM

Trail running 25:00 [3] 3.0 mi (8:20 / mi)

Parental faffing jog.

Not much time today to do stuff, but managed to find time to resign from BlackRock! Yay! And accept a job at Edinburgh Uni! Yay! Start 10th June hopefully.

12 PM

Trail running 30:58 [3] 3.65 mi (8:29 / mi)

Tried to do a steady 6miles at 8 min/miling. My legs refused to run as far or as fast.

Wednesday May 8, 2019 #

7 PM

XC / road / hill race 45:13 [3] 4.83 mi (9:22 / mi)

Dumyat hill race

First hill race of the year. I previously ran in 2003 (45:50-ish) and 2005 (43-something) so was interested to see where I would end up. Not feeling great from the start, but it was fun to move through lots of people on the moor. Lots of students in the race, and trying to pick off the EUOC girls kept me going on the climb.

Passed Laura King and Jon X near the top and tried to push it on the descent. I had dobbs on which helped in the forest but I am a crap descender and Jon reeled me in. Damn. Next year! Pleased that the time is around what I had done before, and had a better time of it than when I was at the sol here earlier in the year.

Off-road running 20:00 [3] 1.7 mi (11:46 / mi)

Stagger around the lake after with some FVO

Tuesday May 7, 2019 #

1 PM

Off-road running 49:44 [3] 5.16 mi (9:38 / mi)

Arthurs Seat. Nice day for it, and WFH so at the crags in under a mile. The novelty of living so near the heart of a city, yet so near top quality running never ends.

Got home and accidentally dropped my Garmin down the loo. Less fun. #dettol

Trail running 1:07:28 [3] 8.22 mi (8:12 / mi)

One of these days I’ll do a run with Megan Wright when I am not incredibly hung over. Not yet tho.

Intervals - long endurance 53:00 [3] 5.7 mi (9:18 / mi)

Went to the Meadows forAlex’s session. Argi was taking it. 10 x 80secs on the grass w 60 secs. Cath Ferry was there who was a good pace for me. My legs were really stiff today but this felt ok.
3 PM

Off-road running 16:00 [3] 2.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Jon and Ali’s 50th birthday relays courtesy of the Wrights. Cerys stormed leg 1, I survived leg 2 and Ivor survived leg 3. 3rd team. V soft sand the whole way as the tide was right in.

Friday May 3, 2019 #

6 PM

Trail running 45:08 [3] 4.56 mi (9:54 / mi)

Up to the Crags, down to St Margaret’s Loch, up the back of Whinny, across the Dry Dam and back across Pipers. Nice, but my legs are still totally, totally fucked from earlier in the week. Damn.

Note
(rest day)

Ray was out tonight so I was going to go running in my lunch hour but Laurence managed to head butt the pavement on the way to school so I had a day wfh looking after him instead.

Orienteering - training 32:13 [3] 4.29 mi (7:31 / mi)

Time and distance inc job to start.

Dalkeith Sprintelope. Fun course, much discussion afterwards on best routes. Set off 2 mins ahead of Ray and he reeled me in on a sprint finish. Made the mistake of thinking that I was running a sprint race, and died from 1/3 of the way around.
