Orienteering - training 1:05:30 [3] 8.9 mi (7:22 / mi)
slept:5.5

Tentsmuir sosol. Brown. So tired! Trotter wedding and ceilidh last night. Bed at 1, woken at 6:30, worse for wear. Oh dear.

So I had my baseplate, and was the plan was to practice bearings. Bearing to 2, 3, 4, lost confidence to 5, good to 6 except then end, when I lost all concentration and ended up in no man's land, with the veg obscuring the detail. 7-8, I was getting a bit tired of running straight. The veg was seriously tough, and I kept falling over, and it was bloody hard to find a north line to take a bearing when tentsmuir is full of tracks that are going nearly north, but not quite. And I was tired, and my head was starting to hurt, so after about 11/12 I started to go back to using the compass to set the map, and I got back into my usual rhythm an everything was much smoother, and the pace picked up, and I relaxed more and it was more fun.

So more practice needed, just not today...

Sore Achilles all yesterday. :-(. I think it is that tibialis posterior problem, not strictly achilles. I had a nice long lie in to stop me getting too pissed off. anyway i was going to do the park run but the constant pain and stiffness psyched me out, so I went for a road run instead. My leg seemed to like this much more and I felt really quite good. I just don't get it. It is much better now than it was before I ran, which is good, but the whole "injury management" crap does my head in. Nice route. Duddingston, Joppa, straight down the prom past the dogs home, and back via restalrig and the bog.

Tired. V blustery day. Too much on at work. I've worked more over time this month than I have done in the total of the previous 8 years. Niggles too. Moan, moan, moan.

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Much cooler this morning - nice. Legs felt stiff for the first time in ages today.
1 PM

Tempo run 56:32 [3] 8.0 mi (7:04 / mi)

8 mile tempo. Half of this is done on asphalt, half of it is gravelly path, which would be ok if it rained occasionally, but it hasn't rained for ages, so the path is hard packed stones, with small skiddy gravel bits over, and it is getting a bit tiresome.

7:24, 7:11, 7:00, 7:15 28:50
6:57, 7:10, 7:01, 6:29 27:37

Legs felt stiff, slight sciatica. Looking forward to an easy day tomorrow!

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:6.5

More sleep please. Nice morning for a cycle. Fractionally cooler, finally.
12 PM

Off-road running 48:51 [3] 6.2 mi (7:53 / mi)

Round HW. I'd forgotten how nice this loop is. Felt good.
5 PM

Road running 22:05 [3] 2.9 mi (7:37 / mi)

Kids in swimming lesson at portobello high school, so I couldn't resist a trip to the prom. To the high street then east to the end of the prom, down to bath street and back. I think I'll have time to get beyond tumbles if I push it. I'm quite sure you're not supposed to leave the building when the kids are having a lesson, but if I don't ask, then I can claim ignorance...

Intervals - long endurance 38:00 [3] 4.8 mi (7:55 / mi)

Warm up, then 5 x 4mins with 1 min recovery. Despite feeling a bit stiff, this went well and I felt good during the reps. Managed about 1k - 1.1 depending on headwind / hills / tiredness etc. Not out and back but longer canal loop as an odd number of reps.

I plan to go to Jim Jarvis's haries sessions on Tuesdays to get someone to run against, but haven't made it yet. Logistics.

Pushing hard but tired and a bit stiff.

I am interested to hear views about thumb compass v base plate. Which do you use and why? Have you tried the other? Thanks
12 PM

Road running 1:00:12 [3] 7.38 mi (8:09 / mi)

The logistical farce that dictates my life all blew up a bit today. So nice long pentlands run home in the sun was shortened to home via corstorphine hill and roseburn cycle path. Not quite the same.
4 PM

Off-road running 41:17 [3] 4.6 mi (8:58 / mi)

So I added a bit later at Aberdour. Started doing some bearings in silver sands playing fields then run along the costal path, and back over hawkcraig point and the harbour. Aberdour was looking glorious today.
