Note

The JWOC team is out! No it's not really, but I think the races were JK, northern champs and boc long which are all over, do I have picked the teams:

Girls: Alice, Beth, Fiona, Julie, Pippa, Sarah, res: Jenny

Boys: Dan, Dane, Harrison, Michael, Sasha, Will, res: Joe or Tim

Few caveats:

I really don't know any of them so I don't know who had which excuses for races, who was injured, who is in favour, who isn't, this is just from looking at the results. I think in many ways that's how selections should be made. The exception is Megan CD who I think is really talented, but I wouldn't pick her as I think coming back from injury it is easier to have one goal to focus on, and WUOC would be a better goal.

The men's team is harder to pick than the women's. It's closer.

Everyone runs everything unless they want to 'rest up', but they should be reminded that unless they have a serious chance of winning the discipline they are resting up for, the 'resting up' is riduculously pretentious, and denying someone else the massive benefit of experience running jwoc races gives.

Missing out is horrid. The standard has gone up a lot in the past year. Big hugs to those who don't make the team. Everyone in the woc team has been gutted about missing as selection at some point. I n the long term it builds resilience. But at the time it is the shittiest thing ever.

Who did anyone else pick?

6 PM

Road running 1:00:00 [3] 7.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

After a ridiculously ridiculous day*, a jog down to Portobello high street, then right, then onto the prom at the end, along to the espy then left and home. When I crossed the hight street on the way home things were pretty sore, but I still had a good 3 miles to go. I couldn't walk the whole way back, so I ran 5mins, ninja walked 1-1:30 and got home ok that way.

On reflection maybe going from 2.5 miles to 7.5 in one day was a bit of an ambitious rehabilitation program, but I enjoyed it and don't think I have necessarily set myself back, just maybe need to take things a bit slower for a few days. I'm off to the physio again tomorrow anyway so it is now his problem.

*it was my birthday a few weeks ago. It wasn't a big one - believe it or not it's actually been a few years now since I turned 30 - so when Lucy asked what I was doing for my party, I said I wasn't having one. This did not compute with her. 6 year old's lives are built around birthday parties. She decided that I was going to have a party after all. The theme was going to be robots, and she had already invited her friends. So this morning I made a robot cake for me, for my party, with 5 x 6 year olds. This afternoon was the party. I had to organise a robot-themed treasure hunt, a Lego robot building competition, a party tea and playing in the garden for 2 hours. There is NOTHING I dread more than hosting kids parties, but actually it was bearable. We didn't lose anyone, no one locked themselves in the loo and refused to come out, and none of the kids turned to me and said 'this seems to be getting out of control' all of which has happened during our parties in the recent past. I was mid-cake-decorating-crisis in the morning, as the World Cup sprint qual was drawing to a close and I was getting the post-race chat from Ruth. It was a sharp reminder of what you escape when you go on international trips. Must get less crocked and get training!

Road running 25:00 [3] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Down to judo with the kids. It would have been back again too had Laurence not dropped his bike down the stairs at the judo place and broke it in a rather unfixable way, so we had to call ray for a lift back in the van. Still not found my garmin. Oh well. Calf ok. Slight feeling of there being a problem, but not much. I think I can start cranking up the volume, as long as I keep it flat and on roads.

Jog up to Lucy's dancing, through pollock with three kids all on scooters. Still taped up. Noticable but not painful.

Cycle commute 45:00 [3] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Harlan loop from work. 5:35 for the hill, but coughing my guts up!

Road running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Stopped cycle for 2 x 5min jog with 1 min ninga walking. Tender, but managed to keep an even, flat foot plant at all times so no further damage.

:-(((. Fuck training.

Physio. I managed not to embarass us both by crying. Instead I sought to cheer myself up, and shake myself out if my ridiculously self-pitying blues by asking about nasty injuries he has seen. He's a rugby physio, and he was comforting someone who had a foot that had done a 180 and both of them knew that his career was over as he was so broken wouldn't get another contract. So the rugby player asked for a fag, and lay by the pitch smoking. Maybe I should just take up smoking instead.
