Orienteering - race 22:00 [3] 2.3 mi (9:34 / mi)

French 5 day day 1 sprint.

We got from Paris to Mont Dauphin on the sleeper. It was quite a cosy cabin. In fact very cosy. 6 berths to a room, and over 100 beds a carriage. We splashed out and paid an extra €45 to get a room to ourselves when was definitely money well spent. It was fun but BOILING and the pillows were the wrong shape (they always are) so I got minimal sleep.

We piled out in the middle of nowhere, but handily about 2k from the assembly of day 1. We were going to walk it but had one very heavy bag and were sat in the boulangerie debating what to do when some orienteers came in, so we sling our bag in the back of their car before they knew what we were doing.

It was a refreshing walk up the hill and I was feeling quite good by the time we got there. The program had not been published when we left, and they were not providing any printed details. This was a bit of a problem as we had no reception. We sort of thought we would wing it. This was a bit of a problem.

By the time of my start it was baking. It looked a bit tricky out there, and I was a bit nervous. I was a bit confused at number 1, as si air was not working - did I miss a box at the start? Went back to punch properly. Turns out it was not enabled, which set me worrying about whether the kids would realise. Then I remembered we had told them to check the codes and check it bleeped, so checked my code and had been to the wrong number 1. Ah, ffs. About 1min dropped already. 2 and 3 good. 4 seemed to come up easily, then the way to 5 didn’t make sense so went back and checked the code at 4 - wrong control again... 30 secs.

Corrected, and sprinted off to 5. Big long leg in which I did a 90 degree error. This was a minute and a half error. Then to seven the control was in a tunnel through which I didn’t see, ran over the hill and back into it. Sigh. Getting annoyed, so didn’t look at 8 properly, missed another tunnel and dropped another minute.

The rest was ok, but I was loads down. Too many silly mistakes. Trying to run too fast, and not paying attention to the mapping of the vital tunnels - should have read the final details perhaps.

Ray did ok, Lucy found a posse and went quick, Laurence was doing best of all of us until he fell and bashed his knee extremely badly. The first aid really got stuck in with the scrubbing brushes and scissors, cutting flaps of skin off. Nice. He got them all though.

We are all very tired now. Up in the hills - tomorrow should be fun.
