MTBO race 2:13:00 [4] 7.45 mi (3.4 mph) +830ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

More Ramen at the TA and then left for a short MTBO section and then ride to the swim. I was not prepared for the amount of unmapped trails in the park and got in a bit over my head. We tried to identify where we were and find the CP for about 15 min before having to turn around and go back to a known location and attack more deliberately.

The trails were excellent and once we reattacked we didn't have any problems.
1 AM

Swimming race 15:00 [4] 0.1 mi (2:29:56 / mi)

Alpine Shop arrived at the swim a few minutes after us which kicked us into gear. Although we had a 90 min lead at the beginning of the last trek we figured the slow trek and 30 min lost on the bike had allowed them to pick up the 30 min with a strong effort.

I did the ~100m swim mostly naked and then got dressed and we took off ahead of AS. Water wasn't too bad nor was it too cold after getting out. Much better than expected.

Mountain Biking race 2:28:00 [4] 11.49 mi (4.7 mph) +1899ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

This was a very interesting leg. It wasn't clear the route the RDs had expected racers to take. We were carrying our PFDs in case we wanted/needed to cross a river. We decided to try and cut off several K of riding and a significant climb and cross the river to a mapped road up to the dam passing CP28 along the way. We had confirmed existence of the road via Google the night before. AS blew by us on bike going the long way as we crossed the river.

Turns out the road was more difficult to get to than we thought and when we got to it it was overgrown with lots of downed trees but still better than shwacking or river running with our bikes. About 200m later the trail became overgrown with rhodo so we had to go back to the river. The road gained elevation and was again no longer accessible due to cliffs so we were stuck traveling along the river. Fortunately there were 3 consecutive flood plains on alternating sides of the river that enabled us to move at a reasonable pace for hike a bike up to CP 28. Once we got 28 we got on the road and rode to the TA.

Although this was not the most effective route it was very adventurous. We were moving the whole time and were motivated to keep moving in order not to lose too much time to AS. Kind of wish it was a required part of the course.
5 AM

Paddling race 2:51:00 [4] 9.11 mi (3.2 mph)

Arrived at the put-in 20 min behind AS and saw them launching as we rode in. We plotted our final 5 CPs quickly and got on the water. We figured gaining 20 min on the paddle was unlikely but kept moving deliberately because you never know. We could see AS moving across the lake in the dark ahead of us.

When we arrived at the 3rd CP we found AS and another team still looking for it. We were thinking this was our chance. The teams were having trouble trekking along the spur to check for the CP and finally found it way up the spur just after we arrived. This saved us significant time.

Additionally on my way to the CP w/ Dave from AS I found out they had dropped some CPs. This completely changed the game. We were now well in the lead.

We eased off the pedal just a bit for the next couple CPs. Once we collected them all on our return to the TA as the sun rose we realized we might be cutting it close to the cutoff so we turned up the gas again for a strong paddle back to TA.

The canoe for this paddle was sooo much better. It was like night and day (pun not intended).
7 AM

Road Biking race 33:00 [4] 5.1 mi (9.3 mph) +528ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

It was extremely cold getting out of the boats and packing up for our bike to the finish so we did it as fast as our fingers would work. We had to carry all our paddle gear including 3rd seat. It took the entire 500ft climb off the bat just to stop shivering and then we proceeded with a 700ft decent to the finish.

Adventure Racing race 23:09:00 [0] 82.23 mi (16:54 / mi) +11124ft 14:58 / mi

Raced Breakdown AR at Breaks Interstate Park with Julia and Earl as team Peak Happiness.

We had a great time in this beautiful hilly area of the state. The RDs did a great job with race organization and got us to some great areas. We climbed lots of Happy Peaks (11k of climbing) and had some great photo opportunities.

We moved efficiently for the first 12 hours and then had a few communication and navigational hiccups upon our return to the State Park. On our bike ride back to the reservoir/finish we took a chance on a road we had scouted using Google but despite saving several kilometers of riding and a large climb it required significant bike whacking and several river crossings to get to CP 28. It truly was an adventure though.

We still managed to push through the final paddle and be the only team to clear the course with about an hour to spare.

Paddling race (Canoe 3p) 1:56:00 [4] 8.37 mi (4.3 mph)

Started race with a 400m prologue where we had to cross a river to get a map of the start and first two points.

Started the paddle in the front and stayed in the front. Our boat constantly listed left. We had to constantly paddle harder on the left to stay straight BUT we could paddle normal to make sharp left turns.
11 AM

Mountain Biking race 2:37:00 [4] 12.0 mi (4.6 mph) +2517ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Ride to the top of Pine Mountain with a few CPs off the trail requiring a short hike. Had to do some pushing up the ST. Saw the teams behind us on a couple out and back sections.
1 PM

Strength race 15:00 [4]

Service project
Cleaned rocks and picked up trash.
2 PM

Orienteering race 4:37:00 [4] 11.87 mi (23:20 / mi) +2557ft 19:23 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Black #2

Saw several teams arriving at TA just after we left. Mostly descended the first half of the trek and climbed the second half. The climbing was on wide open dirt roads under the sun in the heat of the day. Alpine Shop and Happy Mutant went the direction we did but it seemed like everyone else went the other direction.

Had a brain fart on the descent trying to find a trail we didn't need. Also got confused by an unmapped trail near CP7. Corrected both quickly.
6 PM

Mountain Biking race 2:05:00 [4] 13.07 mi (6.3 mph) +1691ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Ride to Breaks Park
Rode down the trail we trekked on but should have taken the northern trail which was 1k shorter and a bit smoother. Looked briefly for a store in Elkhorn but no luck. Arrived at the park right at sunset.
8 PM

Orienteering race 3:19:00 [4] 4.44 mi (44:49 / mi) +1102ft 36:18 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Black #2

Got some hot chocolate and Ramen from the TA and some soda from the hotel. Found the controls at the overlook and then had a miscommunication between Earl and I so we left the overlook in the wrong direction. This was partially due to the transfer of maps to Earl but would have helped to have drawn the planned route on the map. (Second time this has caused a problem in a race See: ARush 2014.) For a lot of the rest of the trek we were discombobulated and not moving smoothly. The resulting route wasn't the worst but we kept having to stop, evaluate, decide, then change our mind and turn around. No troubles finding any of the points though.

Julia was feeling a bit sick on this leg.
